http://wordforge.net/showpost.php?p=1400436&postcount=3 http://wordforge.net/showpost.php?p=1400441&postcount=5 It's difficult to search for "rep" in the Help desk because you can't search for a three letter word. Yes over time the writing in the rule disappeared but we've always operated under admins are hands off when it comes to rep. Can't. I remember that from the last time. Admins don't have the ability to do that.
Yeah. The few times someone has started a repwhine thread, they get negged by people who usually dont give out negs. It's sort of an unwritten rule. Those threads soon die off. Henry keeps his repwhine thread going so he keeps getting negged for it.
Really? Mods can engage in rep war now? Admins cannot. That's one of the very few limitations. Admins have "unlimited" rep powers, including the ability to reset the rep of other posters, so it would hardly be kosher to let them barrage the rest of you.
And, as far as I know, they never have. I do not know of one single instance in the history of Wordforge when a mod or admin did that. What I do know is that Lanz tweaked the rep warriors a good one by setting Rick's rep so high for a few hours, and the meltdowns have been delicious. It has become abundantly obvious now to everyone who the real "rep whiners" on the board are: They are the one's complaining so long and loud about Lanz's little joke. I find that extremely amusing.
I'm not seeing it. Where is it and who was it? Maybe it's just hard to find with the sea of people crying to get the system changed.
Make the "throw weight" of any negreps you give out, directly proportional to the percentage of posreps you've ever given out in the past...and vice versa. Simply using the ratio between the two would probably work.
Maybe we should allow those in the red not to pos rep, but still be able neg rep? It seems most people like rep the way it is, but at the same time, many people also agree that the system has been abused and distorted by some for purposes other than its original intent as simply a disagree/agree comment system. The abuse begins when the rep target is driven into the red and is no longer permitted to respond in kind. If the rep target was still able to fire back with neg reps, the mechanisms which perpetuate rep abuse would be removed, and the overall functionality of the rep system may even return to more of its intended purpose. When and if the community decided to return the person to the green, they could participate in all aspect of rep once more. Also, it seems this is a forum that generally loathes gun control.....in a way, isn't prohibiting members in the red to at least shoot back contrary to that bedrock idea. Why take away the "guns", why the rep control? One more thing to remember about the "Well, it's the Red Room/Grey Room" argument is that while yes, there are different rules in the Red Room and the Grey Room, the effects of those Red Room/Grey rep actions are not only confined to the Grey Room/Red Room. Yes, the rules regarding Rep may be different in the Red Room/Grey Room..... but the Rep points, the pips, they are seen in ALL of the forums, and are also calculated across all of the forums....and actions taken in the Red and Grey Rooms, when it comes to rep, are visibly spilled over to the other forums. Maybe for this reason, since the visibility of those actions (insofar that they can be seen via rep bars) cannot be contained within just a few forums... there should be one rule regarding Rep for the entire forum, and instead only flaming and trolling are permitted in the Red/Grey Rooms (where they can be confined to those forums).
Angry over a bunch of little 80 pixel green and red boxes? People need to chill out and stop feeling so entitled, it's just the internet.
I voted "don't care," but actually, there is one option I'd be against -- that of removing the feature entirely. Being able to leave a quick comment without creating a whole new post is useful, because not everything needs its own post.
only change I would like to see is the admins not being able to do so much with the system. I know that they are supposed to be above reproach, bribery etc, but every now and again .....
Given that there has been two incidents in eight years, do you really think there is a big problem? When I gave out rep that time, I was trying to be nice and had no idea people would be upset until later...and it's never happened again. It's clear Lanzman was having a laugh with what he did since he made a note of Rick's previous level so he could return it where it was. And frankly...why shouldn't we be able to play with the system? It's not like it means a damn thing anyway. It's posts like this that make rep out to be very important. "Leave the sacred rep alone!"
Ignorable rep. You can rep me, it changes my score and appears on my post, but if I have you on ignore, it won't show up in my UserCP (so no flooding occurs) or in the "You have X new reputation comments." message, and I won't even know you did it unless I go back to the post in question. I'm blissfully ignorant, you've vented your feelings, everybody's happy. I'm sure there isn't a hack to allow this, and it's probably been suggested before, but this is the answer IMHO.
