Is ADHD a bullshit illness?

We have a member of our support staff who claims to have this. He uses it to blame everything that he does wrong.....he even uses it as an excuse for lack of confidence in situations. Apparently he refuses to see a counsellor for an psycohological issues, instead preferring to hide behind this notion of ADHD.

I did a little research and I really couldn't equate the condition with any other mental health conditions, such as OCD and so on. The "symptoms" just read like a list of behaviours exhibited by either lazy or generally incompetent people.

Does anyone know anyone who has this? Is this a serious condition, or, as it appears, is it just an excuse invented for people to explain away their lacl of effort or competence?

I don't know if it's a bullshit illness, but 20 hard slaps across the face daily until he unfucks himself would do wonders.

I believe it to be a "fake" disease created by Big Pharma to of course sell pills.

It's just lazy ass people using any excuse for their laziness. Just like lots of fat people like to play the "I have a medical condition" card to excuse their fat when their actual medical condition is the lack of control in not stuffing their damn faces with food.

ADHD is, in my opinion, often incorrectly misdiagnosed.

I had ADHD and just posted about it in the Blue Room (My perogative to share that) which is no doubt what this is all about, you pathetic little twat troll. However, I feel no shame in it. My ADHD is a strength, because it allows me to hyperfocus on projects which I then flat out nail.

However, the downside is areas of neglect. I was diagnosed at around 20. Once I found the proper medicine to help me deal with it, my life literally turned around (I tried several, one of which HARMED my efforts).

Knowing you have a condition and not doing anything about it and not beating it is lame. That's your issue with your coworker, not that he has ADHD.

Yeah, it's real. But I think it should be under control by the time one is an adult.

There are definitely kids that have it, and you see huge differences with medication. That said, it is very over diagnosed and is used as a way to avoid disciplining kids and teaching them appropriate classroom skills.

I'm sure there are cases with a genuine medical condition that can be attributed to ADHD but it seems every other kid has it these days and when you look at the symptoms, they just seem to be traits you'd associate with all children!
I'm not surprised that more and more cases are being 'diagnosed' because in this mental country, parents who have a child with ADHD are entitled to certain state benefits, including a free car!
Adults who claim to have this condition and use it as an excuse for their flaws need to grow up and manage their condition like adults.

As for your support staff member, none of us are qualified to evaluate the legitimacy of their ADHD claim.

Although I'm seeing it as an excuse for lazy ass parenting and a failing education system. Parents have failed en masse to instill discipline or regard for teachers' authority. Too many I know seem to pursue this label for their children to avoid the fact that they didn't properly socialize their brats who in turn aren't asbergers/autistic, but are instead just naturally dumb.

I was 'diagnosed' with ADHD when younger (still in public school). Turns out it wasn't ADHD, I was bored because my classes were moving to slowly for me and I would tune out or find something else to do. So teachers, staff, etc took this as me having ADHD. Basically I took everything in so fast that I was always waiting for the teacher and class to catch up to where I was

Well, that's why I choose to talk about it here instead of going up to the dude and say "hey, this might be bullshit". I fear that he can get away with certain behaviours, which others can't, because he hides behind the diagnosis.

The is the crux of it based on what I am reading. Maybe "sufferers" are just not as competent as other people. It's not to say they can't do what is called for, just that they are, perhaps, a little slower at it.

ADHD only exists because kids today are so fucking overwhelmed with distractions that the brain is on overload (TV, music, iPods, iPads, cell phones, texting, video games, etc, etc, etc.).

It's also partially caused by parents being afraid to discipline their children for fear of someone calling social services and having them taken away. So instead of a good ass-whooping which will be forever burned into their memories, kids get time-out which doesn't do anything at all.

ADHD is not an illness, it's a condition created by our society with senseless information overload. When I was a kid we went outside and played, we didn't sit in our rooms texting or playing video games. If we acted up we got our asses smacked, and we learned quickly not to do it again! If we didn't pay attention in class, we got called to the principle and we got our asses smacked!

I think one of the greatest things that could ever happen to humanity is for a humungous solar flare to fry the world's power grids and plunge back into the age before electricity. No more gadgets, no more texting, no more useless distractions 24 hours a day. Instead, we learn to live life in the sun and physically interact with each other again.

I agree with wat you say about getting arses smacked, etc. When I stepped out of line as a kid it's what I got and it never did me any harm.

It's not a bullshit illness, it's just actually rare and needs to be diagnosed more carefully. I know only a couple people who have it who actually cannot focus on anything unless heavily medicated. Or, they'll hyperfocus on the most random shit, like designing a computer wallpaper based on a video game. I've seen a friend breed 700 pokemon to try to get a specific set of stats from one. Spent the whole day at it. Soon as she took her medicine she stopped and did work.

It's like their brain goes spastic and then zooms in on THAT ONE THING, no matter how stupid, and it MUST DO IT RIGHT THEN AND THERE FOR SIX HOURS. Which is really bad when you have two dozen homework sets to get through and you brain won't fucking stop screaming BREED MORE POKEMON BREED MORE POKEMON.
