    This bears repeating.

I vote that we should keep things like they are.

However, if we're gonna implement this idea, I say take it one step further and have posrep worth zero as well--hence, a neutral rep system, since many people on the board like to be able to comment on old posts without bumping the thread. For most of the older members, rep points have little value since most of us have had full bars for years now.

For a few people. A very few. And for a much larger number, they are a "minus" on the overall balance sheet. I suspect that quite a few of the latter group are no longer here because of that silliness.

This goes from "changing the nature of the game" to "getting rid of the game." A race may not be a contest in the same way that a football game is a contest (you can't do anything to hurt your opponent's ability to score; all you can do it out-perform him), but it is still a valid game.

I really do not think the game needs to be eliminated entirely just because some people use it to make life miserable for those they don't like.

I generally don't neg posters just because I don't like them. Those posters usually don't get any rep from me at all. When I neg, it's because I genuinely disagree and/or think the poster is acting like an asshat.

Which is how most people use it. And in that case, it doesn't need a negative score; you are not trying to "hurt" the person, but only to show that you disapprove of what they are saying and/or how they are saying it.

If negreps didn't take away points from people, I might even negrep some posts myself. But as long as negrepping is used by a number of posters as a way of "punishing" others, it is hard for me to use it simply as a way of saying "I really disagree with this."

Nevertheless, I still am not actively in favor of this proposed change, even though I won't oppose it.

Here I am wasting my 10 minutes before breakfast on this same subject.

Anyway, this sounds about right - as long as everyone promises not to get their panties in a wad a year from now about meaningless neg reps then.

And the people that are defending in the latest "rep war" don't necessarily seem to be defending the target of the war as they are defending the concept of no one getting attacked.

It's definitely not an "either/or" stance here, though, MD. There are a lot of different possibilities for a person's stance on this.

Who exactly are the people that want to "pussify" WF?

As far as I know, it's Lanz's idea. Lanz owns the board. Surely, WF thinks Lanz has the right to do what he wants with his property, yes?

So who are these mysterious others whining and begging for this change?

Coincidentally, that argument is put forth by said juvenile trolling assbags.

Can't be done; there needs to be a distinction between pos and neg in order to allow "agrees" vs. "disagrees" to show up. If they're worth the same, it all shows up as (currently) "comments", though in practice it could be any.

So are there rep games or aren't there? You really need to take a position and stick with it. If the ability to say "I disagree with this post" remains unchanged, what have you lost...other than the perceived right to dig up posts that are more than five years old (per your thread on the subject) in order to - well, you put a name on it, since you claim it's not "rep war"?

Put a name on it. And admit that it's so important to you that yours are the majority of posts in this thread.

Does anyone else find it odd that the big change is supposed to happen Sunday, April 1st?

How is that different than saying "we want to participate in rep games, and we don't care if you want to or not, we've targeted you and that's the end of it?"

I like it. It gives a better indicator of the quality of a person's contribution to discussions, rather than whether or not that person has been ganged up on.

I know! Let's change the color of the red pips. Maybe that's the real problem here. People are just afraid of those bloody things and can't figure out how to turn theirs off.

    Maybe a nice teal...

A color change is a great idea! Anyone who uses up all his neg-reps on the same poster day after day after day can be rewarded with a lavender pip while he's waiting to recharge.

Hey, $corpy! I propose we disallow comment in this thread from anyone who has their rep turned off. No skin in the game means you've already made your decision. Whaddayathink?

    Yes, you do.

I think you don't understand that rep points count regardless of whether or not you have exert a little more effort to see them. But you're another one for whom rep "doesn't matter," right?

There's no penalty except for the value that each individual user places on the rep system. Get over yourself, there is no inherent "penalty" built into negrepping someone. And has been demonstrated, there are some people who get negbombed all the time yet they keep posting. Those who are the ones negging place more value on the rep system, and are consequently wasting a whole lot of time.

And I have my rep disabled because I really don't care to keep track of my red or green pips

[-]I would support this as well. Most people just use it as a quick response to posts they don't necessarily want to reply to anyway. [/-]

Edit: Never mind, O2C says it can't be done.

Let those who hold rep in higher regard continue doing what they want with rep. Let those who don't want to play the game turn theirs off. Rep harms no one.

Then it shouldn't matter whether it "counts" or not.

Umm, that doesn't really follow. Just because it harms no one =/= I don't care if it "counts".
