Yeah, I find no reason why people who don't want to participate in rep wars need to turn rep on. They don't want to participate in silly rep games, so they do what they are suppose to do and turn their's off.

So why not allow people who WANT to participate be able to? Clearly, it's not just one or two people who want to keep things the way they are. What's the motivation of some people trying to change the rules when they already have the option of opting out?

I would think MORE options to customize user experience would be better, not less.

Those of us with public rep disabled can still utilize the rep system.

There's about as many people who are emphatically against this as there are who are apathetic about it, with even more who are in favor of it.

If anything it would loosen up stigma or perceived restrictions on negging outside of the Red Room, thus increasing user experience.

A change wouldn't even be necessary if you could answer this question:

It's interesting, and very telling that the biggest whiners in this thread have a vested interest in keeping things the way they are. And it's not the recipient of the daily neg bombs. I'm in favor of Lanz's changes simply because it would piss off and annoy those that are called in "some" circles, "The Idiot Brigade".

No, the biggest whiners are the ones who stand to gain the most. They'll be able to act even more shit-for-brains than they do now. This is nothing more and nothing less than the socialization of rep. If I were going to make any change, it would be to turn off the ability to disable rep. If you want to stay green, you'll behave. If you honestly don't care about rep and want to act like an asshat, those red pips won't bother you.

    Leave the rep system alone.

So... you want the rep system to stay the same because you want to use it to bully people into behaving the way you'd prefer, and you believe changing it will take away that ability?

    Wow.

On a related note, I'm pretty sure "If you want to stay green, you'll behave." was the sort of thing POTN was saying before his fall from grace. Food for thought.

No, I want it to stay the same as a way of self-policeing the board. We all disagree on a variety of issues. I don't agree with everyone and I don't expect everyone to agree with me. That's why we discuss topics. Act like an asshat and you might get negged.

You're living in a different world then the rest of us. Not one recipient of the current or past bombings are whining. Just those that give said bombs. You and Scorpy being some of the most prominent among them.

I'm getting a real kick out of watching people in this thread who are looking down their nose at the very concept of rep war and having first hand knowledge of their participation in it.

    Hypocrisy galore.

Lanz, if you go ahead with this shit, I would appreciate it if you left my rep at full negative. I do not want my rep reset.

After all these years, you still don't know that posters who hide their scores can give and receive rep?

    Yeah, seriously.

    Who doesn't know that? :wtf:

All "turning off" rep does is hide your score from public view. If your score is above 0, you can still give out positive and negative reps. If it's below 0, you just "comment", with no points given to or subtracted from the score of the person you repped.

It's amazing how much of some of your identities seem tied up in a line of green or red pixels with no monetary value.

The only thing rep does that I kind of like is for the most part it distinguishes those of us who have been around for years contributing from the drive by posters that pop in for a month and quit, visually. But so do our number of posts. If the number of reps you have received means so much to you just memorize it and do the math in the future (unless you're in the red room, there is no math allowed in there.) I know I have something like 12,100 points, give or take 20. Reset it tomorrow and I will still know that. My identity isn't wrapped up in it.

I only like rep because it's a great comment system to use without disrupting a thread and is a good way to scan a thread for the great or horrible posts by looking for the stack of rep comments.

Reset the number if you want, the rep game is so 2000 and late.

The part where it doesn't make fucking sense.

Give everyone a trophy for participating if you like. Make them all feel special and instill in them a sense of equality and love if it makes you happy. Leave me out of it.

Well, since this apparently going through, can we at have one last hurrah, where we raise the rep values or grant everyone unlimited rep for the weekend?

After all, rep is meaningless, so what harm can that do for 48 hours?
