I've used that term because I honestly believe that Barack Obama would NEVER have been nominated by the Democratic Party (much less elected president) if he was not black.

Based on his extreme lack of experience and notable background for high office.

I and others have supported black candidates before that we thought were qualified for such high office.

By the way, the term "novelty president" is not of my creation. I first heard the term used by one of my 12th grade black students four years ago.

So it's racist to point out the obvious racism in why a candidate got elected?

    Got it.

Okay, here's the problem. Although there may be something to your argument that Obama's race distinguished him from the other Democratic candidates,

    (a) there is no scientific way to prove that it affected votes, and

    (b) it's an ad-hominem fallacy when discussing policy. For you to point it out amounts to playing the race card. And that's racist.

When policies are being advanced by a man grossly unqualified to have the job then why he is where he is happens to be a completely legitimate observation.

He is where he is because he was duly elected by processes outlined in the Constitution. In the opinion of most voters, he is qualified, and that has been expressed twice.

Where's the proof that voter behavior was determined by his race?

I suppose one could point out all the voters who literally said they were voting for Obama because he was black, but I'm just playing devil's advocate here. ;)

Anecdotes from individuals are not scientific. Their opinion also doesn't preclude the notion that Obama was their first choice otherwise.

And so your only answer, now that your point has been completely undone, is to move the goalpost.

That was the question that was asked and answered, and it doesn't get any clearer than someone saying they're voting for someone because of their race, which is just as racist as someone saying they won't vote for someone because of their race.

So less than a handful. And yet you still say he was too inexperienced to elected so it had to be 'novelty'. HINT it isn't 2008 anymore. You need to get a new shtick.

Democrats add so many names to the code word category that it's hard to keep up. They cry wolf on racism so often that it almost makes you forget that they were once the party that supported slavery.

I asked for scientific proof that Obama's race affected the outcome of the elections or nominations. You have yet to present any.

Surely some individuals were motivated by race. So what? The question is whether the effect was large enough to sway the nomination or the election from where it would have been otherwise. That is Dayton's position.

novelty would have applied to Hilary just as quickly had she been elected as the first female potus.

lets look at the word via Merriam Webster

IIRC, Nixon did some acting in college

At any rate, Reagan's former profession (TWO DECADES before he was elected president more or less) was never a notable part of his public perception.

And Reagan had been governor of the largest state in the U.S. for eight years.

Every liberal satirist who drew breath at the time had a variation on the "he was playing the president", joke.

    What rock were you under?

Actually, it was a notable part of his public perception. Even as a kid I remember the jokes that at least he was the first politician with sufficient training because he'd been an actor.
I can't begin to list the "Bonzo" references in contemporary criticisms of him...

Seriously, y'all woulda been better off with Fred MacMurray.

I don't consider President Obama's reelection in 2012 to be at all relevant.

Everyone knows that an incumbent president has huge advantages over the opposition.

President Obama's reelection is simply an extension of his original election because he was black.

    Still a novelty president.
