Why Do Some Consider the Term "Novelty President" Racist?

I notice that few people posting here have tried to refute that Barack Obama was elected president because he was black.

Most have tried to obscure it with the allegation that the very notion was racist.

I'll never understand it.

When a majority of white people don't vote for a black candidate they are "racists".

But when 95% of blacks vote for a black candidate they are NOT "racists".

You can't have it both ways.

You have to be living in severe denial to not acknowledge that race played at least a small factor in Obama being elected. It also helped that he was a Democrat and ran on a platform of "Change". At the time people liked what he had to say, and they also liked the fact that he was a man of color as electing him would even further be a vote towards change in America.

In the end, Obama had us fooled on all fronts.

IIRC, 20% of the population have said they'd never vote for a black president, 20% have said they'd never vote for a female president, 20% will never vote for a Mormon, and 20% won't vote for someone from the opposing political party. I'm going to guess that there's some significant overlap in those numbers, so the actual number of folks who're some combination of racist, sexist, religious, or ideological bigot is probably less than 10% of the total US population. If we could just deport those douchebags, it'd be a great country!

 

After eight years of neo-conservative, anti-intellectual, evangelical-driven, "with us or with the terrorists" horseshit from George W. Bush, yeah, people were ready for change. I also think people were excited to elect someone who reflected the changing cultural makeup of the country, and who didn't seem like a raging asshole all the time.

It didn't help that the other guys put up a candidate who seemed befuddled by the complexity of modern life, responded to the biggest financial crisis this country has had in 70 years by throwing up his hands and who wasn't even liked by his own party.

So if that translates into "he got elected 'cuz he's black" then I don't know what to tell you.
