    Vengeance upon WHOM? context matters.

Also, and much more importantly in undermining your claim, if you seek to make the case that the writers are trying to evoke, in the minds of the sheeple who buy the tickets, the previous outing featuring Khan, naming the ship "Vengeance" to evoke the word "Wrath" is as full of fail as your shinji gag.

It may well be true that the plot points scattered along the way seek to evoke that film (major death from radiation for instance) but that has fuck-all to do with the name of the ship.

Your resistance only makes my penis harder. :evilpop:[/QUOTE]I've seen no reason to believe that's even possible.

Aaaaaanddd....given that CX has conclusively demonstrated he has nothing to offer the discussion but a tired and over-used image, he can spend some time on ignore so I don't have to have the view spammed up with this third grade bullshit.

I think the rules are slowly changing on this. Not necessarily for Star Trek, but it's visible in other franchises, and might well drift over into Trek as well at some point. Bobba Fett wouldn't be what the prequels made him if tie-ins hadn't treated him the way they did (even beyond the Christmas Special); "Being Human" was adapted into a Who two-parter; and so forth.

You should be able to hit ignore on a user from their user options.

As it is, you have to go to the their profile, go to user options, THEN hit ignore, THEN confirm ignore.

OR, go to your profile, go to edit ignore list, and manually type the person in.

Too many steps for a basic function like that.

    Where's Borgs?

On that frabjous day when Flashlight learned to post without automatically working in a troll, I'd have told him that, plus what JC said.

Roddenberry created the Pike character. At the time, Star Trek was Roddenberry's property. He sold the rights to Paramount, which means that the Studio, even now that it's part of CBS, owns the rights in perpetuity.

Subsequent writers have been allowed to "borrow" Pike - with permission of both Pocket and the Studio - but the novelists are not consulted on the future fate of the onscreen characters.

With one exception that I'm aware of: Peter David just happened to be loitering on the set of The Undiscovered Country and mentioned the name "Hikaru" to his long-time friend George Takei, who persuaded TPTB to write it into the Captain's Log entry at the start of the film. The name Hikaru is now canon.

There may be other such exceptions, but that's the one I know about.

Imo, in ST '09 ONE of those six Constitution Class ships docked/moored in Earth orbit SHOULD'VE been the U.S.S. Defiant. It actually would've been very appropriate given the Defiant Prime's fate of ending up BOTH in the past AND in an alternate timeline/parallel universe (the MU). Though imo, ENT's "exploitation" of the Defiant was rather conveniently hamfisted, & simultaneously "ST:Enterprise"'s 'In a Mirror Darkly''s greatest strength & weakness, despite the blatant & obvious contradiction if not paradox of that. That being the whole Defiant thing/element in ENT's IaMD Duology.

Less successful was Nichelle Nichols' attempt to have "Nyota" established as Uhura's first name onscreen (IIRC, it was first used in Janet Kagan's Uhura's Song).

However, many of the novelists have used it, and it's also the name of the protagonist in Saturn's Child.

Hikaru, BTW means "to shine," and Nyota means "star." :)

So Uhura's (translated) name is "Star Freedom"? That's a little silly. I mean, it's nice, but it's a little silly.

It scans better if you put an "of" between them, which is how Nichelle prefers it: Star of Freedom.

The name Sulu, OTOH, isn't even Japanese. Roddenberry must have been having flashbacks to his war experiences when he came up with that:

I realized that after I took Japanese and learned there was no native "L" sound in the language at all. But then, by the 22nd century, people could live on just about any place on Earth, so some cultural blending is bound to happen. I just decided to chalk it up to that, kind of like the Klingon forehead deal. :clyde:

All this stuff going on in star track. Meanwhile back in Star Trek, Romulus is GONE, and Ambassador Spock and a Romulan mining ship have vanished into fat air!

Well, the first reviews are trickling in. The verdict so far? Big, slick, overblown spectacle; soulless, unoriginal, paint by numbers, does nothing to advance Trek to any new territory.

Was I the only one who was excited at the prospect of Gary Mitchell? Something never done before on the big screen? Instead we get warmed-over Khan. Meh....

The thing about Gary Mitchell was that his friendship with James T. Kirk from his academy days was well established in Trek lore and having Kirk have to turn against his best friend but in a much bigger dramatic way than in the original timeline would've been interesting to say the least.

There was more potential to be interesting that way, but to be frank it might have been more interesting to see the reboot move in its own direction rather than seeking to rehash something that had already been done.

almost from the day the first one came out I was pimping the idea of Mitchell being the black hat in the second movie, with the only reservation being how you could rework the insane notion of a "great barrier"

The writer who wrote "Where No Man Has Gone Before" reportedly had good scientific grounds (for the late 1960s) for the idea of a "band of energy" surrounding the galaxy that he supposedly forced Gene Roddenberry to back down on his objections.

Also, it was said that he had even trumped Isaac Asimov on a scientific point at one time.

IIRC, this is mentioned in The Star Trek Compendium I think it was called.

In a universe that's supposedly constantly expanding? Is the "galactic Barrier" even a useful idea anymore or can we dispense with it entirely to acheive the same result?

I think the notion of being flung to that leading edge is established enough in trek. I'd toss in Q to do it. (hmm, Kieran deLancie for visible continuity?)

Set it up with him finding the crew and deciding they're his new toy-there's a gold
Mitchell could then get the Q power a la Riker and proceed to go batshit as a somewhat less benevolent nuQ simply fucks off saying "Have fun".

From what we've heard, I do approve of the idea of Kirk having to kill himself to grow as a reflection of having to let Spock die in TWoK. The presentation still has to be solid (I'll find out soon enough), but it's a valid idea.
