http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/08/06/us-usa-hawaii-language-idUSBRE97516L20130806 You're lucky it was laughter and not a homicidal mob. I sure as fuck would not appreciate being stuck in line behind some self-important prick who demands his special fucking uniqueness be accommodated at taxpayer expense. By now, this assclown should be locked up every time his big toe touches pavement. I'm only half joking with that.
Let's see, Mr. Anthony is a member of a group whose land was stolen, endured repeated efforts to eliminate their unique culture, and Albert thinks he should have no right to use the native language of that land in government proceedings? Yet another example of Albert's might makes right philosophy in action.
Oh, here we fucking go... The right to speak a language does not equal the right to have that language accommodated at taxpayer expense.
I don't fucking care... We came, we took, we own. He's one of our bitches now. Learn English or go hop in the sea over some rocks.
This guy speaks English, but is an activist for promoting the Hawaiian language. In short, he's just a fucking attention whore.
Unless he was born in 1893, no he fucking isn't, any more than I get to give English people shit because Culloden. Knock it off with that lamebrained shit.
If he's interested in making Hawaiian the official state language of Hawaii, there are better, legal ways to go about it. In the meantime, this sap should man up, use English as it's the dominant Civic language, and stop being a douche behind the wheel.
Considering in just about every other state practically requires those same officials to speak Spanish, yeah I can understand the gentleman's desire to have his native language heard. And considering that da kine speech used to spoken everywhere in Hawaii... However to go about and knowingly break traffic laws and put other folks' lives in danger..... Big fail.
There needs to be some kind of threshold. On the one hand, government is supposed to serve the people, not enforce some kind of language supremacy; if a whole bunch of people have something as their primary language, services should be provided in it. On the other hand, you can't have a whole bunch of infrastructure added for just a few people. So where should the line be?
We shouldn't even speak Spanish as a government courtesy in the rest of the country. You speak Spanish? Got a problem? Go to your respective embassy and go home.
There is a long history of first-generation immigrants not speaking English. My maternal grandfather grew up in a town settled almost entirely by German immigrants, with a German newspaper and all kinds of the type of thing that make ignorant xenophobes lose their shit when it happens with Spanish.
My family spoke German for 3 generations but we learned English in 1 to participate in society. Oh, and we came here legally. Coming to America... dumbest fucking thing my family ever did. If only I could go back to 1870 and stop them, but quantum mechanics won't let me do that in this particular universe anyway.
I see. He's trying to make some kind of point. What's Hawaii'an for "enjoy the next 90 days in the county jail?" Oh, well, he'll figure it out when he gets there. His culture includes driving cars and operating on public highways paid for by state and federal tax dollars and which require licensing and adherence to all applicable traffic laws? Oh, and he understands English PERFECTLY WELL, he's just trying to be a bother? Fuck him. Fuck him right in the ear.
I somehow doubt you'd feel the same way if the government offices in your area suddenly refused to serve anyone in English. It's not their problem that you can't speak Swahili, right?
As someone with Lakota ancestry, I'm fucking offended by busy-body do-gooders like you. All you're doing is being insulting to an actual travesty which actually happened by even claiming a requirement to speak what has become the language of the land in any way compares to what was done to the Native peoples of North America. This man was not stolen away from his parents and subjected to physical and psychological abuse in a concerted effort to keep him from speaking his language. His name was not taken from him, and he is not being forced to forget his language. And furthermore, dredging up the past like this does nothing, and it in no way applies to what his happening in this case. So you can just fuck miles of off with that bullshit.
I've still got ancestors over there whose family members fought in both wars as German officers. I think we would have winged it. My grandparents got to meet a few of them several years back when they visited the States.
there's a difference between not being outraged about something and full press support. The guy has a valid point, though I don't think he'll get very far with it. It amuses me to no end that guys like Albert (and perhaps you) are threatened by something so inconsequential. And fuck off with your Native American cred as an effort to compromise my position. If the story were about a guy in North Dakota,I'd come down with the same position -- it's a valid point, no need to feel threatened. You guys take this stuff too seriously. Really, look at yourself, and ask whether it matters that a Hawaiian activist wants to use his ancestral language. It doesn't. Not to you, not to me. If it matters to him, more power to him.
