    Weird Wars
The Anglo-Zanzibar War (shortest shooting war in history)
Fought between the United Kingdom and Zanzibar on 27 August 1896, the conflict lasted approximately 38 minutes, making it the shortest war in history. The immediate cause of the war was the death of the pro-British Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini and the subsequent succession of Sultan Khalid bin Barghash. The British preferred someone else and in accordance with the Treaty of 1886, the British consul had final approval as to whom became sultan which Khalid did not obtain. The British considered this a reason for war and sent an ultimatum to Khalid demanding that he order his forces to stand down and leave the palace. In response, Khalid called up his palace guard and barricaded himself inside the palace.

The ultimatum expired at 09:00 on 27 August, by which time the British had gathered three cruisers, two gunships, 150 marines and sailors and 900 Zanzibaris in the harbour area. A bombardment which was opened at 09:02 set the palace on fire and disabled the defending artillery. The flag at the palace was shot down and fire ceased at 09:40. The Sultan's forces sustained roughly 500 casualties, while only one British sailor was wounded, making it one of the most one sided wars in history
    2) Moldovan-Transdniestrian War(both sides went drinking together).
After the Soviet Union collapsed, two-thirds of Moldova wanted closer ties with Romania and neighbors to the west. But the area of the country to the east of the Dniestr river wanted to stay close to Ukraine and Russia. War broke out, and the east split to form Transdniestria, which remains unrecognized by the world.

When Moldova and Transdniestria started fighting, it was a weird war. The local military called it the Drunken War, as officers of the combatants met every night to have a drink together. They went away in the morning and opened fire on each other. At night, they got together again to drink for those they had met with the previous night and who they had killed.
About 300-600 people in total were killed in this war.

Emu War (only war against a nonhuman opponent)
The Emu War, also known as The Great Emu War, was a week-long military operation undertaken in Australia in November 1932 to eliminate emus (big ostrich like birds) said to be running amuck in the Campion district of Western Australia. The emus were responding to a long, hot summer, which caused shortages of food and water. The "war" was conducted under the command of Major Meredith of the Royal Australian Artillery, commanding a force of soldiers armed with two Lewis machine guns mounted on trucks and 10,000 rounds of ammunition. But shooting blindly into a group of birds which can run up to 30 mph did not bring the expected results. The birds simply ran away even after being hit by a machine gun round.

Over the course of a week or so, only a handful of the estimated 20,000 birds were actually killed. Major Meredith - the Australian commander in the "Emu war" - was astonished and famously compared the emus to Zulus (a famous warrior tribe in South Africa) . After a few days the Defense Minister ordered a withdrawal. And thus the "Emu War" ended in a military defeat for Australia.
About 20-100 emus were killed in the war. The Australians expended about 10,000 rounds of ammunition and suffered a complete loss of dignity.
    4) The Football War (war provoked by sports event)
The Football War was a five-day war fought by El Salvador and Honduras in 1969. It was caused by political conflicts between Hondurans and Salvadorans, namely issues concerning immigration from El Salvador to Honduras. These existing tensions between the two countries coincided with the inflamed rioting during the second North American qualifying round for the 1970 FIFA World Cup; on 14 July 1969, the Salvadoran army launched an attack against Honduras. The Organization of American States negotiated a cease-fire which took effect on 20 July, with the Salvadoran troops withdrawn in early August. El Salvador ended up going to the 1970 FIFA World Cup1970 FIFA World Cup, where they failed to advance to the next round. Also called the “Hundred Hour War”.
Around 3,000 died in the war (900 El Salvador, 2,100 Honduras).
    5) The Cod War(s) (wars over fish, sounds like “Cold War”)
The Cod Wars, also called the Icelandic Cod Wars were a series of confrontations in the 1950s and 1970s between the United Kingdom and Iceland regarding fishing rights in the North Atlantic.
In 1972, Iceland decided to reduce overfishing near its territorial waters by declaring an economic exclusion zone and enforcing the fishing limits with their coast guard leading to a series of net-cutting incidents with British trawlers that fished the areas. As a result, the Royal Navy deployed warships and tugboats to act as a deterrent against any future harassment of British fishing crews by the Icelandic craft, resulting in direct confrontations between Icelandic patrol vessels and British warships, which included ramming incidents. As both nations were members of NATO, they could not actually shoot at the other side.
The dispute ended in 1976 after Iceland threatened to close a major NATO base in retaliation for Britain's deployment of naval vessels within the disputed 200 nautical mile (370 km) limit. The British government conceded, and agreed that after 1 December 1976 British trawlers would not fish within the previously disputed area
Millions of dollars worth of fishing equipment was damaged or destroyed, one engineer was killed, one fisherman was injured

    6) The Toyota War (where Toyota land rovers defeated tanks in desert fighting)
The Toyota War is the name commonly given to the last phase of the Chadian–Libyan conflict, which took place in 1987 in Northern Chad and on the Libyan-Chadian border. It takes its name from the Toyota pickup trucks used as transportation to provide mobility for the Chadian troops as they fought against the Libyans. The 1987 war resulted in a heavy defeat for Libya, which, according to American sources, lost one tenth of its army, with 7,500 men killed and US$1.5 billion worth of military equipment destroyed or captured. Chadian losses were 1,000 men killed. This was the deadliest of the “Weird Wars”

    West African Empires
    The Kingdom of Ghana
The Kingdom of Ghana is generally given the dates 9th to the 13th century CE by historians. It marks the beginning of a series of empires in West Africa that were involved in extensive commercial trade. You should note by looking at the map above that the area of the Kingdom of Ghana during this time period is farther north than the present day country of Ghana. Click here to see a map of present day Ghana.
Some have called the Kingdom of Ghana the "land of gold, " an excellent description since it was abounding in gold. The gold trade was largely responsible for the development of Ghana into a powerful, centralized kingdom. The peoples of West Africa had independently developed their own gold mining techniques and began trading with people of other regions of Africa and later Europe as well. At the time of the Kingdom of Ghana, gold was traded for salt that came down from the Sahara desert.
In addition to the gold trade, historians have pointed to a second important factor in the development of these West African Kingdoms. This was the use of iron. The use of iron to make tools and weapons helped some people to expand their control over neighboring people. These changes called for new forms of social organization, contributing to the development of centralized, powerful empires. Historians also say that the use of the horse and camel, along with iron, were important factors in how rulers were able to incorporate small farmers and herders into their empires.
The Ghanaian kings controlled the gold that was mined in their kingdom and implemented a system of taxation for their people. Around 1054, the Almoravid rulers came south to conquer the Kingdom of Ghana and convert the people to Islam. The authority of the king eventually diminished, which opened the way for the Kingdom of Mali to begin to gain power. The trade that had begun, however, continued to prosper.
    The Kingdom of Mali
Take another look at the map above showing Africa's kingdoms and empires. (Click here to go back to the map of Africa's Kingdoms and Empires.) Notice the relationship between Ghana and Mali. What do you see? The Kingdom of Mali includes all of Ghana plus a lot more territory! During its time, Mali was the second largest empire in the world only after the Mongolian empire in Asia. The dates that historians have designated for the Kingdom of Mali are from the 13th to 15th centuries CE.
The Kingdom of Mali came to control the gold trade that the Kingdom of Ghana had controlled before it, but it also expanded its trading in many ways. The Kingdom of Mali controlled the salt trade in the north and many caravan trade routes. Additionally, it traded extensively with Egypt and the copper mine areas to the east.
The founder and first ruler of the Kingdom of Mali was Sundiata Keita. We know about him through the writings of a 14th century North African historian named Ibn Khaldun. Sundiata expanded the kingdom to include the Kingdom of Ghana and West African gold fields.
The most celebrated king of Mali was Mansa Musa. He greatly extended Mali's territory and power during his reign. He made a name for himself in distant regions throughout the Muslim world through his pilgrimage to Mecca, which is in present-day Saudi Arabia. Sixty thousand people and eighty camels carrying 300 lbs. of gold each accompanied him to Mecca.
    The Kingdom of Songhay
The dates for the Kingdom of Songhay partly overlap those of Mali, although the information that follows will reveal at what point Songhay gained control over certain portions of the old Kingdom of Mali. The dates for the Kingdom of Songhay are between 1350 and 1600 CE..
The first of two great rulers in the Kingdom of Songhay was Sonni Ali. He came to power in 1464 CE and made the Songhay perhaps the most powerful state in western/central Africa at the time.
His successor was Mohammed Askia, who came to power in 1493 CE. He expanded the kingdom even further and set up an even more advanced and strongly centralized government. He developed a new system of laws, expanded the military, and encouraged scholarship and learning. Unlike Sonni Ali, he was a devout Muslim, who used the combination of Islam and commerce to build his kingdom. He brought peace and stability to the kingdom during his reign.
The Kingdom of Songhay came to an end when the Moroccans invaded and conquered them. By 1600 CE, the days of the great kingdoms of West Africa were over.

    Hey @Dayton3 , let's talk about this:

    Link

    1) Volunteer assistant sounds like something you do when you're fresh out of high school, not when you're a fully grown man
    2) Your peers don't seem to respect your knowledge or intellect. Why is this?
    3) Your peers also question your work ethic. Why are you so lazy?

You're quoting a guy who has never been a coach or worked in education in his life. He is not a fellow coach or educator. Meaning he is not my peer in any way. He is one that has been on my case for years because I said "I liked to read"

I was never a "volunteer assistant". He flat out lied about that. My school didn't update its website regularly so I wasn't listed among the regular coaches for a long time. That happens a lot at small school.

I quoted a veteran coach with IIRC over 150 wins to his credit over 20 years. He said that several of the things coaches did today during summers (like 7 on 7) were basically make work and a waste of time. I agreed with him.

As for "my peers". The only one I heard from directly was a long time veteran coach who had coached against me twice (he is retired now). He said he was impressed with the job I had done and believed I would be at the next level eventually.

Finally, the guy like I said that you are quoting was also angry at me for defending my friend (at that time one of my best friends, but he has since moved to Georgia). This friend (Coach Davis) in the conversation won a state title in 2011 at Strong. By any measure I felt that had earned him a right to more respect than was being shown. But the guy you quoted thought that Coach Davis was a lousy coach who just happened to be lucky to have Kenneth Dixon playing for him at Strong (Dixon is now the leading all time rusher for Louisiana Tech and I hope has a shot at being a mid round NFL draft choice next spring).

    Any other questions.

Volunteer assistant coaches are quite common. They're often parents, but not always.

Given the lousy state of education funding in this country, schools rely on volunteers for a lot.
