Yes, I support it, but it is so low a bar that I don't spend much time on it.

Back when the Clinton assault rifle ban was pending, CNN ran a piece on assault rifles, and featured video of someone firing a belt-fed M60 machine gun into a pond at full auto. I called CNN and explained why that was wrong and pejorative. The guy said "Thanks, we'll fix that! Thanks for the eyes!" :wtf: and hung up on me. The same clip ran for the rest of the day, unchanged.

Here's a little gunsplaining for you. If you want to prove a point by destroying an AR-15 by sawing it in half on Youtube, more power to you, but here's what you do. Cut it through the receiver. Don't just cut the barrel off, because then you've committed a felony on Youtube numbnuts. :marathon:

I doubt many deer hunters use full metal jacket ammo. The full metal jacket actually decreases lethality but it is required for militaries by the Geneva Conventions. Well, and Hague Convention.

Lets be perfectly honest about something, okay? 5.56mm is a crap hunting round. It's simply not humane on anything larger than a coyote, which average in weight from 15-46 pounds depending on what part of North America you're in. If I'm hunting an average sized white tail deer, which average in weight from 80-150lbs, I'm going to use a .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, or .45-70 Government. Any game animal larger than that is going to be faced with solid, kinetic energy penetrators from the .45-70 Government.

I know there are a lot of people that do hunt smaller animals and I know there are a lot of people in rural areas that do have to deal with predators and/or pests like coyotes. I'm still one of the latter. But, I don't own an AR15 for those purposes. I own an AR15 for three reasons. They are:

    1. I like them.
    2. They are fun to shoot.
    3. They are very useful for two-legged threats at medium distances.

At the end of the day, that's why I have an AR15 and that's reason enough for me to keep it.

You wouldn't think it would be so, but lots and lots of people here use ARs in the original caliber to hunt wild hogs, which are a real scourge and can also grow into really huge animals. I suppose the magazine capacity is what makes it such a popular firearm for the task because it probably takes multiple hits to put down some of the larger examples of that beast. Plus, since they roam in herds, you'd be able to shoot more of them that way.

I'd never, ever use an AR-15 for deer hunting.

    I'd use an AR-10.

I don't give a fuck what it's called, if it gives a scrawny autistic creep the ability to murder dozens of children or fat old man the ability to murder dozens of concertgoers from the comfort of his hotel room, I don't want any idiot to be able to buy as many as they like.

If I can't buy meth at 7-Eleven on those Mondays when I need more than coffee to get through the day, then you can't have your penis enhancing mass murder toys.

I can totally buy that. Hogs are a pest animal and Alabama has no closed season or bag limits on them. Since we're not particularly worried about wild hog bacon or wild hog ribs, I can see using an AR chambered in 5.56mm with a 30 round magazine in that role. One of the more scary things I've ever been in was stumbling onto a pack of wild hogs before daylight in woods. I was on my way to a cut-over and heard a pack of them down in hollow below me. If they had heard or smelled me and decided to charge, I would have been hosed. I had four ready rounds in my BAR and six in the .357 on my hip.

Edit: An old saying just popped into my head. "No politician will ever try to ban your hunting rifle. They'll call it a sniper rifle first."

You kind of missed my point - what the gun looks like (scary intimidating military looking versus wood and traditional looking) doesn't affect the lethality of the bullets,
if the exact same round is fired. And you are right about why we use full metal jackets in military weapons but there is more to it - they just function better with them.

agree I would not hunt deer with an AR15 but as you know quite a few people do - and it's always a lively debate on the Georgia Outdoor News Forum that's for sure!
But you're right, you need no reason other than it's your choice of weapon. They are the Fender Stratocaster of the gun world - a classic design!

My favorite carrying-around rifle at my folks' retirement cabin in upstate NY was my Mini-14 (for the ininitiated: same caliber as the AR-15, but is a small, inoffensive-looking, wood-stocked, semi-auto "utility rifle"). Mainly because the occasional woodchuck would pop up in the fields and scamper. Occasionally needed a fast follow-up shot to finalize the encounter. But there were also coyote around, and I knew the Mini was good for them too, just in case.
I also liked to have my Remington-copy Winchester '92 in .44 mag on me up there. As it happened, I got a scampering woodchuck with it with a follow-up deflection shot I'm still surprised I made. Sometimes I think a good ol' lever gun can be just as quick and handy in a fight as a semi-auto. BTW, .44 mag is too much gun for woodchuck at 25 feet. SPLAT! :soma:

WTF did a woodchuck ever do to you? You must have been traumatized by a tongue-twister as a child.

Really. If splatting small animals is how you get your jollies, I see why the gun needs protection.

Chucks are varmints - vermin. They are to be gotten rid of when present. They dig holes in the middle of your fields that are actually big enough that a tractor's small front wheels could snag in and tip the tractor over. Talking to one of the local "farm doctors" up there, she said she'd had a couple of cases where the tractor pinned the farmer under it, one requiring an emergency amputation at the scene. My father had a gorgeous 1952 Deere that he mowed the fields with, exactly the kind of tractor prone to that, especially on the steep hillsides. Death to chucky!
