Mean is enslaving people, then building statues to the slaver.
Vile is jerking off to the statue, and starting a giant crybaby thread when they tear it down.

Person 1: All these Raptors dying is a serious problem. We need to do something.
Monsanto fan: Yeah, well are you an ornithologist? What do you know?
Person 1: I'm not claiming to be an expert, I just think it's a problem. I read that this DDT is the problem.
Monsanto fan: Oh, now you're a fucking biologist AND a chemist? Tell me exactly, in all the terminology that I deem acceptable why DDT is the sole problem?!?!
Person 1: Yeah, nah, don't care about you. Just gonna go talk to other people about banning DDT.

Put another way, except for triggering the little gunflakes, what does it matter if someone says clip instead of magazine? You obviously knew what they meant or you wouldn't know how to correct them.

They've got an entire forum for that, but keep dragging it into the RR. Says something about maturity and self-control, IMO.

Says the guy who flipped his lid when Zombie compared .223 to 7.62N.

In order to talk about magazine capacity without daring to correct someone calling it clip capacity, I'd have to start using the words incorrectly so as not to send people squealing to their safe places. Why should I be obliged to do that, and why does not being comfortable with it make me a snowflake?

On the other hand, what about full auto vs. semi auto? What about the difference between a manual safety and a passive safety and a decocker? Those are existential differences that can't just be ignored.

Yeah, and NPR played a clip of Ted Cruz saying "a magazine clip" (the same term Obama used which the far right jumped all over him yet I have yet to hear a peep about them doing the same with Cruz. I wonder why?

    Actually, no I don't.

Yes, yes they can be ignored. Here watch this, I'll role play for you.

Person 1: I think we need to limit how big clips are.

MAoHS: What do you think is a reasonable size for a magazine?

See, in the above you neither had to use their terminology NOR derail the conversation into gun-nut minutiae.

And since you bring it up, I wasn't correcting @Zombie on a gun-nut minutiae standpoint in order to not have to address his point (in fact I actually agree with his point; I prefer .308 to .223 and next fun gun I buy will likely be a Kel-Tec RFB). In fact it wasn't even gun-nut minutiae, it was copy edit minutiae. He was using two competing units of measurement not only in the same discussion, BUT IN THE SAME SENTENCE. No. Just no. NO!

One could use a revolver from the 1890s and kill 17 people in 3 minutes, if the circumstances were right.

In this situation YOU (Person 2) were LITERALLY the first to use the term assault weapon. IN YOUR OWN ROLE PLAY!

*edit and to be gun-nut minutiae pedantic the strict definition** of an assault rifle is not automatic but select fire. In fact both the most common military variants (by orders of magnitude) of M-16 and M-4 don't even have the OPTION of selecting full auto; only Safe, Semi, and Burst. :facts:

**I would argue that the general definition of assault rifle would include 'civilian versions of assault rifles' and that those gunflakes who get triggered by the 'incorrect' usage are merely trying to sidetrack the conversation.

Name the last time this happened with a revolver.

If all the AR-15s are gone, what stops it from happening with a revolver?

Or will we just ban those, too?

(Incidentally, though he didn't use a revolver, the Virginia Tech shooter used ordinary handguns that are in no way, shape, or form "assault weapons.")

In calling out the word play used by the other side.
Quit gunsplaining! I'm feeling bullied! :sob:

Edit: in terms of firearms law, burst is fully automatic, since multiple rounds can be fired with a single trigger press.
I don't like the term "assault rifle" applied to civilian-legal semi-autos. I prefer "modern sporting rifle" or "defensive arms." I won't have the debate on the terms of the prohibitionist side.

As long as the "sport" is unarmed human beings whom the shooter feels a need to "defend" against, they are used in assault, and prettying up the language changes nothing. Keep them out of the hands of unstable school shooters, and as far as I'm concerned you can call them "Al."

This is no different than people talking about other issues like pollution, the justice system, economic disparity, etc. Sorry, but the more you know about the subject the better the odds of having an intelligent, productive conversation. Gun basics are not super complicated but if fashion were some pressing issue I'd be "lost in the sauce" because I wear workout shorts & t-shirts most of the time and have little use for fashionable clothing.
