This shit went well past any sort of actual peaceful, lawful 'protest' on Day One. If you don't want to get maced, don't be standing there in front of a line of cops. If you don't want to get shot with rubber bullets, obey the fucking curfew orders and get off the streets. If you're one of the ones handing out bricks to teenagers, breaking windows, setting fires, or looting stores, FUCK YOU. I won't shed a single tear if you get killed. I've got a scary amount of people on my social media defending violent riots. The argument is that peaceful protests have been exhausted over the years, and now violence is necessary. When I object, they attack me as privileged / racist / insufficiently committed to social justice. I'm struggling to figure out how looting and burning down buildings is going to solve anything.
Isn't taking over church property by the government a violation of the constitution? I am sure the right wing evangelicals will be angered that their church was taken by militarized police here in america. We can expect them to completely denounce the seizure of church land by federal forces, right? Keeping the government out of churches was really important last week so I am sure none of those people would be completely hypocritical and just accept it now. So when Trump seizes church resources for his coup do you think his followers will recognize he won't give them back and he will declare himself american pope? This is what this guy does. The Civil War, The Civil Rights movement of the middle of last century, and even the Rodney king riots brought about change in policy and improvement. It was the same argument I had with the managers at TWC. By never giving polite customers credits and rewards when they call tech support you train people that they have to be assholes to get something. This means over time even your nice customers start to get nasty because that is how you need to be to get your problem fixed. This is the same method america uses. Until you forcefully demand something you get brushed off over and over. If something negative happens to me and I do not fight no one looks and says you were polite so we will help you out. Did anyone give Colin Kaepernick anything before people started yelling about it? No, they would have fired him and let him rot. If he had not fought back and just let it happen they would have never mentioned him again. How much do you hear about Tim Tebow? Very little anymore because he rolled over and took it. Even his own people don't give a fuck about him anymore. You have to remember the racists are fighting to keep in control and against black people every day. They are active. That means you have to fight back. You cannot just live and let live becuse they simply won't do that. When I suffered discrimination coming out at work I could not put the genie back in the bottle. I was out and there was no amount of bowing, apologizing, or avoiding I could do to get them to stop. The more I tried to back away, the harder and more nasty they became. The more I complied with their rules, the more the harassed me with more. It was eye opening how important it was for prejudice people to attack. The only thing you get by giving in and complying is your ass kicked.
The problem is, our democratic levers in the US go vastly under-utilized. People don't vote and they don't participate in legitimate political processes. Voter turnout in 2018 was 53%, and that was a decades-high for a mid-term. For the odd-year elections, when we elect our municipal government officers -- the people running the police -- you can expect significantly less. I understand mass protesting and riots in a place like Hong Kong, because they don't have democratic processes to install new leaders for anything relevant. Their system has always been rigged in favor of the occupying power (Britain, then Beijing) and large business interests. What else can the people do? So when people argue that peaceful protests a la Kaepernick have been tried and failed. Okay, but did we try voting? Did we organize ourselves and commit the long political grind necessary to make real change? No. We reacted spontaneously, violently, and aimlessly. Not much sympathy from me.
Not all of the problems are elected. The police are hired in many cases. Some of their leaders may be elected, but when you consider the police union guy in charge of the killing cops in this case is a racist and part of the problem, we do not have much of a choice in that realm. When you consider the dems were shouting for bloomberg who was king of stop and frisk and wanted it applied more harshly to minorities, you really cannot trust voting dem to eliminate these problems. When you consider large amounts of voters actually want a racist and feel blacks are thugs you cannot win. These cops are not elected. You cannot vote them out. Your solution does not work. every time we have made radical change against racism it has been coupled with protests that got violent. The reality is that the reason the protests got violent was the police themselves and mostly not the protestors. You are really wrong on this entire issue and you need to study history a little bit better. Blacks did not come away from slavery and civil rights violations because they accepted things. Women did not get the right to vote because they sat around and let men give it to them when they felt like it. GLBT people did not get marriage and protections because they said they would wait. Are the hispanic people ICE has detained and is fucking with getting their rights now that people are distracted from them? Your claims do not match up to history. Black people are learning they will not be heard by taking a knee. That is our government's fault. They should have heard them and done something when it was peaceful. There are black people being unjustly hurt and killed by the police and that needs to stop. Black communities members are under attack by the police every day, and that needs to stop. If rising up violently gets results then I support them. They are not getting it on their knees.
