Nah, we'd be welcoming President Jeb! as key Democratic strategists desperately try to get Chelsea interested in running in 2024.

SNL will probably get to plagiarize themselves, subbing Biden in for Reagan in a sketch like this:

ding ding ding we have a winner! Your last sentence nailed it. Not only has one side beat the other but with dominance in all parts of the government they have the ability (no guarantee they will pull it off though) to set things up so that they change the system to stay in absolute power. I'm not blaming them, the Republicans got lazy and careless so the Democrats can now strike while the iron is hot.

I'll give Biden the benefit of the doubt - he may not smell blood. But alas he won't really be running the show, Harris and his other handlers will, and they have a pretty long shelf life ahead of them.

Thanks to the psychotic attack on the Capitol :brood: the Democrats/the left will be able to use the "right wingers are evil & dangerous" leverage for all it's worth to suppress any opposition to their goals. It's a propaganda bonanza for the Democrats. Mindless, pointless, violence never pays off and only helps the opposition in the long run, and causes needless tragedy in the short run. :( I hope the rioters get fast-tracked to the front of the line for maximum punishment.

I think if Trump had a little more self-control and/or better advisors, he probably would have weathered it fine. All he had to do was to muzzle himself, put competent people in charge of the response instead of Pence/Kushner, and not seek partisan advantage.

Or really, I should say "someone in Trump's position" could have weathered it fine, because Trump is largely incapable of those three things.

I've thought a lot about what a normal Republican -- say, a Marco Rubio type -- would have done.

They still wouldn't have done the BEST thing, which would be shutting most of the economy down for four or five months and providing robust supports so that nobody went bankrupt -- because that might mean that somebody who isn't rich might "get something for nothing" -- but they would ALSO not have facilitated the creation of this bizarre death cult that thinks following any kind of public health advice is two steps removed from worshipping Satan. They would not have turned mask wearing into a "culture war" wedge issue. They would, by and large, have acknowledged ... well, reality.

What I think Reagan, Bush or W would have done would be to give speeches that say in summary: "This is a serious situation, but we're Americans and we'll make it through. We ask you to temporarily restrict travel and normal activities while we get this under control, social distance and wear masks." They probably would not have pushed for any more of a stimulus than we got, but they would have either distributed PPE more efficiently or gotten out of the way so that the states didn't have to compete with the feds and each other.

Joint Chiefs have issued a statement condemning last week's violence, affirming their loyalty to the Constitution and acknowledging that Joseph Biden will be the next duly-elected commander-in-chief.

It's an interesting statement... particularly the first paragraph, which clearly indicates they are ready to be deployed on American soil to "protect lives and property" and "ensure public safety in accordance with the law."

So... I'm kind of guessing that the Capitol rioters and possibly Trump were visualizing the inauguration going this way.

apples and oranges with that. Professional soldiers don't get to pick & choose their missions. Part of that "all enemies foreign and domestic" oath we take. See post #1578 for recent developments referencing that oath and how it may apply very soon (hopefully not).

I hope not, but suspect it will.

The problem is a lot of these people actually believe they are defending their country. They see themselves as a militia fighting tyranny.

and that is what I cannot understand about legit military vets taking part in this insanity! They should know the difference! For example that air force female vet who ate the bullet in this fiasco. Some of these vets have fought in places that make you say "Damn! I'm glad I don't live in this shithole!" and hug your family extra hard when you rotate back home when the dust clears.
War and chaos sucks ass! We have a constitutional time-tested process for contesting an election. Failing that, we have a constitutional time-tested process for certifying the winner. Neither of these events incorporate violence at any point. You don't have to like it, but you have to respect it. Try to interrupt it through violent means and you should expect to die in the process, and one person found out the hard way. A peaceful but spirited and lawful public protest is your constitutional right. :salute: Turn violent and I would shoot you myself if I was authorized and lawfully in that position.
That's my 2 cents on the Wednesday hilarity.

Except they would argue, and factually they'd be correct, that your country was founded on just such an action.

In their eyes they are doing exactly what the 2A demands of them and they weren't persuaded of that overnight. This is the line they have been fed, which they have fed themselves, for years but Trump's presidency has made it seem legitimate.

In their eyes they are the patriots, congress are traitors and deserve to die.

To be honest I'm surprised it took this long to happen.

The second amendment doesn't demand anything. It simply states that people should have guns so they can be used for a militia. The idea of the time being that a standing army was dangerous to liberty.

The militia act states that the militia is used for putting DOWN insurrections. And that's how it was used by the Founding Fathers, starting with Washington putting down the Whiskey Rebellion - which he then pardoned, the first pardon in US history.

As to the rest, they lost a free and fair election. That wasn't the reason behind the American Revolution - taxation without representation, remember? The British system at the time was even more flawed than ours is now.

So while you may be correct about their motivation, their motivation is hideously flawed, and has absolutely nothing to do with reality.

Exactly this. The “security of a free state” depends upon being able to stop rampaging mobs bent on overturning elections.

Negative on Trump's presidency making attacking the Capitol legit, especially for the vets or family members of vets. Congress might be people that you despise/mistrust/etc. but they are not your designated mortal enemy nor an immediate threat to life and limb. Vets know the deal. Actually every civilian there knows the deal too - no excuse.
Also 75 million people voted for Trump and many millions of them legally own weapons and practice & respect their 2A rights. My point is the 2A does not "demand" that you go ape shit. That said the only person shot was a rioter, by a cop. Some rioters had guns, but none were employed in the attack. The 2A was a big nothing burger in this particular riot.

BTW it did not "take this long to happen" as riots were going on all summer. This is the first one (that I can think of) on such a large scale that was carried out by right wingers versus left that involved fatalities. I'm not "the other side too" here because a violent riot is a violent riot from the law enforcement/security point-of-view.

DAMMIT demiurge already touched on what the 2A demands -

And they did a damn good job of stopping the mob considering attacking the Capitol was unprecedented since the War of 1812.

The actions of those cops in the face of people wearing "Blue Lives Matter" shit was nothing short of heroic. Frank Figluzzi noted today in looking at the video where the cop was screaming his guts out while getting crushed, that the "shooting discipline" they showed whilst being threatened by superior numbers was exemplary.
