Funny, as chairman of the local soil conservation district, who holds a degree in agricultural economics I thought I knew plenty. Oh, and when you assume I know nothing about the Florida ecosystem, or any other environment, you're showing that smug elitism that everyone is so fond of. But see, you're not "helping" the environment, if you were you'd be removing man's blemish on it, not patching up the scars left behind by his habitation. You're helping man better mesh with the environment, big difference. You're not saving the earth, you're streamlining mankind's conquest of it. As for native species, I couldn't care less. Some of my favorite species are invasive.
I never said you didn't, for YOUR area of the USA. So you're up to date on the rules and regulations for wetland reclamation and other protected habitat work in the state of Florida, and in Broward and Palm Beach county? If you are, then yes, I will be VERY impressed, because I don't know WHY you'd ever need to know any of that in your area. So you suggest what, exactly? I am not sure what you think my position on this is. Unless we want to start living in trees again, I don't know what you suggest as an alternative. Mmmm, not exactly. Conquest would, in fact, be paving the Everglades, damn the consequences. This is why I said you don't know anything about Florida's ecosystem. If you did, you'd never say something like that. Malaleucas, Australian pines, acacia trees, the list of invasive plants that harm the environment here goes on and on. Let me explain something: I love my state. I love the natural beauty of Florida, even if most people who move here can't appreciate it. That is why we are one of the few nurseries where anyone can find such a large variety of native plants. Try finding a Bald Cypress of Florida Slash Pine somewhere else. You may dislike me, but you can not paint me as some drooling slave to industry.
No, you're not a drooling slave to industry, more a dealer to the collective guilt and insecurity of Florida citizens, as exemplified by your apparent addiction to government contracts. A native species in the center median is nice, but it hardly outweighs the environmental impact of the countless cars slipping down that highway. Riddle me this, what did ya have for lunch today?
We do government contracts because they pay on time. We got burned already with shady business people down here. The government pays, so we work for the government. It's a LOT more complicated than you're making it out to be. You seem to think it has to be an either-or proposition. But what I'm trying to demonstrate is that there are ways to live in this world WITHOUT destroying the natural beauty of the environment we inhabit. I can't change the whole world, but I do my part to fix things where I can. Er...a PBJ. Why?
The bread came from the fertile crescent, the peanuts from South America, the grapes, not sure depending the on the variety they could be native to the region. Grapes are one of those prolific plants that seems to be everywhere, probably an invasive species from days gone by. OK, now assuming you ate Iraqi bread, and imported South American peanuts, you're still cool. But if the wheat and legumes you ate were produced domestically, I wonder how many native species they were offsetting? Up here the government will pay you to seed you pastures with native grasses. Pastures that likely won't be supporting American bison. Get my point?
I do. But there's a huge difference betwen those and plants like Malaleucas, which actually HARM to environment and aren't controlled like a cash crop such as grapes. Every plant, just like every animal, is a living creature with it's own behaviors and quirks, and no two plants will have the same environmental impacts. Australian pines, for instance, are not inherently damaging to the ecosystem here. They may crowd out other trees somewhat, but aside from that, they aren't necessarily damaging. That is, until a category 1 hurricane comes ashore and blows it down like it's nothing. And these are big, BIG trees. Florida is a great example of what NOT to do when introducing non-native species of anything. Pythons. malaleucas. Fire ants. South american toads. Acacias. It's just a mess, and it does real damage.
Fun trivia fact: If Gore ran for the presidency, he would be the SECOND Nobel Prize winner to run. Trust-Buster Teddy won the Prize in 1906 for negotiating the end of the Russo-Japanese war, and then ran with the Bull Moose party in 1912. Whenever you think you're original, remember: Teddy did it first. There's a reason he took the last spot on Mount Rushmore.
Some Historian might argue that Teddy's quick solution which ended that war was certainly part of the catalyst for the rise of Japanese imperialism which climaxed in WW2.
Irrelevant. Morality isn't based on feelings. And Henry. I've never favored blowing up civilian airliners. Is you claim otherwise you are knowingly spreading falsehood pure and simple. And that is evil.
Who said anything about morality? YOU said "Terrorists target civilians simply to spread terror." As if, by comparison, the US has never tried to inspire terror in a civilian populace. And you are wrong.
Fuck you, you bloodthirsty cunt. 76 innocent people blown up on an aeropane and you claim it isn't terrorism. That's condoning it, and don't deny it. One of the most scandalous things I've heard on this board.
They gave Algore the prize for peace because there is no way on earth he could win it for science or literature.
It certainly was a political decision. These things usually are. The prize is awarded by the Norwegian parliament with intensive lobbying from European elites, and basically can be summed up as two fingers to the Bush Administration and the GOP in general.
^ the surest way to diminish its relevance. The Nobel Peace prize is about as prestigious as a Grammy
I agree entirely. See my remarks about Kissinger. There are also others who recieved it and should not have their names associated with "peace" in any way.
There was a picture in today's local paper of a woman holding a sign that read, "Al Gore makes me proud to be a Tennessean". Oh, it made me sick. Yeah, he was in town just last week for his aunt's funeral, but I'm betting he wasn't on Tennessee soil for more than 4 hours. I'd love to be able to calculate how much time he actually has spent in this state. I don't think you should be giving anything for just raising awareness of any issues. When you get up off your ass and do something about it then I'll consider you. What's that saying... actions speak louder than words. What 'action' have we seen out of him? IMO, he's all talk.
Point being, he never was FROM Tennessee, so he shouldn't claim it. Having family here in this town and owning a house in Carthage doesn't quite count. You seen his utility bill for that house lately?
Anyone can win a peace prize anymore. At least you have to literally earn one for science, literature or economics. When they gave the peace prize to Arafat and then to Jimmy Carter, I knew the gig was up. Al Gore- peace prize? Remind me again which administration he served as VP that was busy bombing the literal hell out of Serbia and Bosnia in the late 90s?
He is also trying to profit off of it via the companies he owns stock in that he sponsors as solutions to the alleged global warming problem.
Well, yeah. I just can't go register to vote in any district I want. Would also be interested to know how many times he's hit the voting booths where he's a registered voter. Maybe the last time he voted for himself in the presidential election?
That wasn't the aim. The main target in Hiroshima was the Mistsubishi shipyards. But the bomb was dropped in the wrong place. There wouldn't have been a tenth of the civilian casualties and a quarter of the total casualties if it had been dropped properly. IIRC, the same was true for Nagasaki. Last but not least, the "1,000,000 American troops saved" figure was pulled out of Winston Churchill's ass. Military estimates ranged from 50,000 to 100,000 casualties. Churchill first exaggerated it to 500k, and then 1 million.
But you forget about JAPANESE saved by the atomic bomb attacks. Japan was on the verge of starvation. Care to figure how many Japanese would've starved or died of disease while the U.S. spent another year fighting their way on to the islands?
It might be better for the Prize to be renamed the Nobel Prize. Considering the people that have been selected that are not peaceful, only promote peace via their words and not their actions it might lend a little bit more credibility. At this point I view the prize as being nothing more than a joke, and something that anyone who seriously values peace, promotes peace, would ever accept.
For some reason I had that on the TV. It was quite amusing to see them suddenly cut off the coverage and go to commercial.
