My ex and I have an odd relationship. We get along as long as we don't have to live together full time...we have three kids together (and she has two others) and she lives just up the street from me, and she's disabled (she has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis) and so I spend a lot of time at her place helping her with the kids (fact, I cooked dinner there the past two nights because she can't stand up for long times until her upcoming surgery hopefully fixes her hip replacements)...and I just recently added a ramp onto my house because she couldn't use the steps.

I just call her my "ex" because...well, she is. But it's not like ex-wife in a traditional sense.

I have heard of plenty of other people who have similar relationships.

Sucks compared to a real relationship, but it works, and it's better than many divorce's I know, who can't be in the same room together without killing each other.

And it makes it easier on the kids this way. We can do holidays and stuff together, and the kids aren't shuffled to different homes every few days.

Is this a problem our nubian friends only face in N. America? Like, do they need to rub the local ointment on themselves if it's Africa? Africa really doesn't get winters, so I imagine it's less of a problem in da' muthaland!

With me, at least, it's strictly a cold weather condition, so I'd guess it's only blacks in places it gets cold.

You would think that black people would not mind the cold. After all, their black skin helps attract and retain heat better than white skin. :)

Yeah, you would think, but remember, dark skin was something humans had first, when we lived in hot, sunny African climates.

It's was only the descendants who left Africa for Europe, smack in the middle of the last glacial period (Africa as in a drought, iirc) who then developed white skin as an adaptation for colder climates.

So if it was just a matter of heat regulation, you think it would have been the other way around...

I am pretty dark skinned. I used to get "ashy" in the winter when I was younger. But I started to scrub myself with a wash cloth when I showered, and that took care of it.

Prior to that, I just used soap and water, and didn't "scrub" until my father explained it to me. He stated I need to scrub off all the dead skin. If you just put lotion on it, you are just mixing the dead skin with the lotion.

So, now I have taught me sons to scrub with a wash cloth, and then put on lotion.

Do black people not use washcloths? I thought that was just a joke from Dave Chappelle.

Actually, my father said washclothes were for girls. To just lather up with your hands and don't stay in the shower forever.

My father was a merchant marine and they didn't take long showers on the ships. He said get in, do what ya gotta do and then get out.

I take 3-minute showers, but I still use a washcloth. You can wrap it around your hand, and you're less likely to drop it than soap.

Then, I guess sailormen like having excuses to drop the soap :soma:

I use the bar of soap directly. I especially like the part where I jam it between my butt cheeks. :moon: :soma:

Do the folks who share your shower know about this? That's fucking disgusting. I bet you leave pubes on your soap, too.

Must have been that whole generation. When Dad was young they didn't have indoor plumbing. When they got it, the pump wasn't very strong and you had to conserve water (apaprently the same pump in the house when I grew up too). Then in the service I think they just dumped water on each other from their helmets .

If I took more than five minutes in the shower he used to yell at me for wasting water.

You must still live with mommy and daddy and you all use that one bar of soap in the shower. :garamet:

Negative. Hairy soap bugs the shit out of me.

And the only person sharing my shower with me is already completely infected with my cooties.
