Poor Kitty cats taken for lethal injection. Their only crime is living in a town full of cat hating assholes. http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/03/12/cat.bounty.ap/index.html
Love that Humane Society. The cats are more than capable of living independently, but when someone's rat dog is attacked or some asshole gets mad when he leaves out food and they show up, they're all rounded up and gassed.
Not up to checking that kink, pretty sure where it's going. Down the coast here there was a guy who was caught shooting cats and prosecuted for it. What he was callling ferrel were actually being fed and cared for by the bridge personnel. Ferrel cats can be a nusance to some degree but they are trapping, sterilizing, and releasing them down the road a piece. The humane society has a job to do. I just don't particularly agree with all of their policies. Some I do. It varies from case to case I guess. I had considered volunteering here but figured I had enough grief in my life. I haven't taken anything to them in years, even opossums and raccoons. All they'll do is kill them and I have invested too much time and care in my herd and opossum family to let that happen to them, even the extremely stupid ones. Must be the Buddist in me.
Here's some research someone did on the cat owners worldwide on answers/ google. I wouldn't trade mine for most people out there.
Sounds like it's a case of bad karma coming back to bite these people in the ass. Here's something really telling: Why is his fucking cat outside to begin with? If you want to keep a cat as a pet, keep it inside the house, not outside free-ranging and fucking like a jack rabbit. Cats, while perfectly capable of taking care of themselves in the wild, are going to go native if left to their own devices. If someone can't do what it takes to care for an animal, he or she's just asking for trouble. You gotta hate to be Bob Barker about it, but it figures that this is the result of cat owners failing to spay and neuter their animals over a long period of time. It's not a bad idea to get a cat "fixed" if it's never going to leave the house. If you're going to let it roam the neighborhood freely, it's the least that you could do for your community. Leaving a bowl of milk on the porch can hardly be considered 'proper pet care'. Looks like this is nature's way of saying, "Fuck you, you should have cared for your animals responsibly." Either that or, "This is what you get for giving the nod to Huckabee and Obama."
Keeping a cat inside isn't healthy for the cat. Not that Oedi will stick as much as a paw outside when the weather's bad, but that's her choice... And I'd never put food outside for her - apart from the rest of the neighbourhood cats, I'd be worried about attracting rats. I've mentioned before, Oedi's mother was feral. It's a pity there aren't more people around like the woman who owned the land she was living on: tempted her into a shed when she was pregnant, took her to the vet after the kittens were weaned and had her spayed, released her when she'd healed and found good homes for the kittens.
Really? In all of the years I've had cats, I've never had any veterinarian tell me that it's unhealthy for them to be kept inside. In fact, I've had a couple tell me the exact opposite: An indoor cat isn't exposed to disease or infestations like felines which are allowed to roam.
Our vet says cats don't get enough exercise if they don't go out. Moot point, since when ours does got out, she just sunbathes on the neighbour's flat shed roof...
Bob Barker has the right idea. Unless you're breeding them then they need to be fixed. I have inside cats that are too stupid to be outside without having to be concerned they'll get squashed and outside cats who couldn't hit the box to save their lives. I keep them all well fed so they don't wander off too much though I have had them go walkabout and not return which is frankly quite upsetting especially since I know one of my neighbors has a penchent for hauling them off and dumping them for which I hope they rot in hell for. If I ever catch them then the shit's on. I am as responsable as I can be in their care and upkeep and have spent thousands on them over the years. I have no shame for owning/caring for them, period. They are part of my family.
We're not talking about pets. We're talking about feral cats. Our farm used to be over run with feral cats. We tried trapping, fixing, and releasing them...but it got prohibatively expensive before we were a third of the way through. They kept re-producing, then disease started spreading. Finally we had to get shooty with them.
I appreciate your efforts and understand your situation now, I wasn't aware of your history with them. It doesn't take long for things to get out of hand, trust me I know. Rabbits took lessons from cats IMHO. Sometimes a bullet is all you can do when they get diseased, can't/won't be trapped and spread the crap.
That is incorrect, especially in the U.S. where we have coyotes. The average life span for an outdoor is cat is something like 2-3 years and for an indoor cat it's upwards of 16 years. In the neighborhood in Austin where my parents live, cat would be lucky to survive 6 months as an outdoor cat. Dogs are lucky to survive 24 hrs if they get out of the yard. That place crawls with coyotes and even features the occasional bobcat. One family lost their freaking great dane to a bobcat a few years ago.
Fair enough. Not many coyotes in the Home Counties. Seriously, OH has been tempted on occasion to report one of our neighbours to the RSPCA: his cats are outdoors 24/7. As OH says, what's the point of having cats if they're never in the house? I think we get it right: the cat can go out whenever she wants to, but we never shut her out. We do, however, shut her in the conservatory at night. No way am I putting up with her running round the house at 3 am.
I have to get shooty with dogs and cats people leave on the side of the road when they become unwanted. It's really the only humane thing to do. Otherwise the cats and dogs become feral and attack my property or starve to death or get diseased and die. When you drop your animals off and turn them into the woods, it's a death sentence. The illusion of them playing in a glade isn't going to happen.
I got to disagree with you there love, the average life expectancy of an outside cat here is 5 years, that of an indoor cat is much higher than that. Maybe its not great physical strength wise but the dangers and outside cat faces like dogs, coons, assholes in 4wd trucks, diseases from other cats, etc far outweigh the health risks with indoor living. Besides, whomoever posted earlier is right about the people that live in that town. There is one universal truth, you stop feeding a kitty cat of any kind and he/she will stop coming around. These people are leaving food out and then bitching about it. At least feed your cat inside or in a shed or something so other cats, possums, coons, can't get to it. My dad takes food out and feeds a big ole coon that comes around back of his shed every morning. My mom is afraid it will bite him some day, with rabies or something, its huge and it has kittens somewhere because he saw one of them with the mama one day. My dad also has a big cat but it stays away from the coon because it is smart.
n Just because he does leave it outside is not reason to call the RSPCA. I remember what it was like over there with those people. With the RSPCA you could beat your kids but don't scare a horse or your headed for Bristol prison. I am not kidding.
BIG SOB too! My cat weighs just under 10 pounds, my dads cat weighs like 17 or something, all persian fur and muscle he is, but that racoon dwarfs his cat. No domestic cat could survive a run in with that coon. I figure its got to be tame or it would have whooped daddies cat already and with kittens too. My dad is very old and had a stroke years ago, we can't tell him much. At first he told me it was a fox, said he could tell by the circles around its eyes
