Somebody, in this case it seems, needs to get the ball rolling on investment. The website she mentioned has a Chinese NGO mentioned as one investor. I agree that a strictly government-run development isn't a great idea (anywhere) but this one isn't, as I understand it.
Well, America has plenty of better options than planned cities...in a place where the alternative is...well, crap...it might do okay as a starting place for better opportunities for Afghanistan to build on.
I'm out of rep, but this is exactly my point. To say that Afghanistan should prohibit progress because it might piss the Taliban off(which Cass DID say)....is ridiculous. Afghanistan HAS to keep moving ahead, regardless of cost. There is no other choice.
I don't have a problem where she said that a planned city probably isn't a good idea. I've said that 15 times in this thread. For some reason everyone keeps skipping the part where she said that planning for the future in a country that is apparently as 'unstable' as Afghanistan is 'pretty much useless.' My initial thought on her post was bang-on....because she just proved that I was right. She DOES think it won't work, nor SHOULD they even try....because it might piss off the Taliban and they'll start blowing shit up. Unless of course you have another meaning for saying its 'pretty much useless' to even try building for the future.
Well, lessee... 14thDoctor, Tamar, Demiurge, et al. have one understanding, you have the opposite. Hmmm...
Huh? What the fuck does this have to do with Demiurge saying anything? I was quoting Cass. Here, read it again. But hey....whatever.
She did not. She said 30 year plans are pretty useless. Even in America which is much more stable, such a plan wouldn't work, much less in a country with as much violence and instability as Afghanistan. Much better to focus on short term goals like water, power, communications, health, education, getting people jobs and the country under the rule of law.
Anc, that wasn't quite what she said, either. Her exact quote was She's saying before you can plan 30 years you have to start by removing the "last remains of the Taliban." She didn't say it wasn't possible to plan that far into the future just that it was the Taliban that would prevent those plans from coming to fruition. What Azure, TG, and I (among others) are saying is that the plans are part of the process of getting rid of the Taliban. Just wiping them out is not going to work because we won't have given the common people an alternative to embrace and they're just as likely to head into drugs or fall for terroristic fanaticism.
Did he really just equal seeing a problem with fanatics to 'being against progress'? Never thought I'd say that, but can we have Face back? At least Face has a brain.
Oh, by the way: Just in. Link. Too brutal for me to gloat, but that's what I'm talking about. They are willing to use human battering rams.
I agree that there is a problem, although I do NOT agree with how serious you're making it seem. Saying that Afghanistan shouldn't 'try' to make progress because it'll pretty much be 'useless' is ridiculous. But then again, considering its you, I don't expect much more.
This reafirms Post #164. If they are willing to die for their "cause", it only seems fair to help them.
No, she said big fancy long-term plans are useless. Do you need someone to translate it into Canadian so you can understand it? Completely untrue. They love soccer. Everyone over there loves soccer. I miss Face.
No, seriously. You're the one who claims she said something to the effect of not liking 'big fancy' progress. So quit avoiding the fucking question and show me where she said that.
No, I was having dinner. I'm the one who said "she said big fancy long-term plans are useless." I said nothing about her not liking progress. Is there even a point to discussing this with you? You're interpreting everything everyone says to mean what you want it to say, and throwing out trolling accusations whenever anyone tries explaining how you're misunderstanding what's been said. Maybe this is just one of those subjects you're unable to discuss reasonably. That's not an insult, everyone has them.
She never said anything about any big fancy long-term plans. I agree, this is getting a bit ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as the 3 pages it took Cass to admit that she said that progress can't be made because it'll piss off the Taliban. Oh well.
I went to the Old Spaghetti Factory. It's not the greatest place, but the girlfriend had never been before, nad you get free ice cream at the end.
