Has Wordforge Surpassed TNZ? I believe it has

1 - I was never banned from TrekBBS, I just don't post there a whole lot any more due to the generally annoying way it's run.

2 - Wordforge is a "better" board than TrekBBS because it's a much smaller board than TrekBBS. Problems are smaller, we mostly all know each other (to the extent you can "know" a screen name), and our rules are looser. Should Wordforge become as big as TrekBBS, I'm fairly certain we'll have a lot of the same problems as TrekBBS. It seems to be inherent to the medium. What saves us, as has been mentioned already, is that we don't coddle the thin-skinned here. You throw shit, you get shit thrown back at you.

3 - I started a thread in TNZ not too long ago and was frankly suprised at the quality of posters who popped up in it. It was kinda like Wordforge if all our members were teenagers. Bearing in mind that that's a really small sample size and only one small corner of TrekBBS, it nevertheless put me off a bit.

4 - I don't envy Bonzie her position one bit. No matter which way she goes, someone will piss and moan about it.

It's very true that it is easier with smaller boards, because people on them seem to be closer. The bigger a board gets, the more differences crop up and that sense of "We're all together," vanishes to be replaced by factions.

The only danger in the small board is becoming so close that it becomes cliqueish. Then the board will stagnate and in extreme cases, die.

People do piss and moan about many decisions. I take advice, try to do what's best, reverse if it appears that it's not working, rant at times and other times, have a hearty laugh. What can one do but laugh sometimes?

    Nothing.

Adminning is job that sucks because you simply can not make everyone happy...it's impossible. The best you can do is try to be as fair as possible and do what you think it right.

Oh, and have a very thick skin. :ramen:

    I like both.

I especially like coming here when I wish TrekBBS had testicles, so that I might punch them.

I don't recall the exact topic of your thread, but I do recall that it was worded a bit ... loosely.

When I'd realized you'd seriously wanted to discuss the subject, I asked you a few questions about the specifics, but never got a response.

Also, if I recall correctly, DarthTom had tried to engage the conversation, but also wasn't answered or answered with a flimsy response.

Many threads in TNZ are immediately jumped on by yahoos and jokers and people just making a joke out of the thread - myself included. But, if you seriously want to discuss something, you have to weed through the crappy posts until you find a poster who will seriously discuss it.

And in every thread someone is willing to discuss the topic seriously.

Well considering you are the replacement for T'Bonz, you better like TrekBBS. if you don't you will be downright miserable.

I think except for a few bad apples in the moderatorship, TrekBBS can be a decent place.

Unfortunately, the board is also bogged down with ridiculous rules overall as well an arbitrary method for enforcing those rules. It also has a large percentage of people who are for lack of a better term are whimps. They are offended, hurt, and etc. by insignificant statements, words, and opinions.

I went ahead and registered at TrekBBS, but I didn't see much of interest. Star Trek isn't controversial or current enough to discuss in the depths they have featured.

TNZ is a hidden forum that you have to request access too. It has different rules from the general board. The general board has rules that are enforced somewhat arbitrarily by moderators and administrators. They aren't necessarily the most consistent in how they enforce them unfortunately. At times it can be somewhat of a popularity contest. TNZ doesn't have many rules. That is almost 100% governed by the popularity of a poster as we have witnessed recently with Dayton being kicked out over the violation of rules by other members of the forum.

I think both boards (along with Starscape) fill a need for me. Sometimes I go for weeks without posting here, and I've gone long stretches without posting in TNZ. It's just whatever mood I'm in and whatever floats my boat at any given time. I've learned a lot about coping with the weirdness that makes up any given bbs and I firmly believe that the overwhelming majority of posters are decent people I would happily call my friends. (I don't classify everyone who agrees with me as a friend, or everyone who disagrees with me as an enemy). The overwhelming majority of the rest I give the benefit of the doubt, while the rest (which is an exceedingly small number) go into the "wouldn't touch 'em with a ten foot pole" category.

I popped into TNZ yesterday for the first time in months, and the topics were just so lame. I got bored of browsing and left after a few minutes.
I'll re-visit TBBS to air my ire when the new Trek movie is out though...

For someone who's center right or even further right on the political compass I would agree that WF is a much friendlier and much more stimulating place. When WF was formed a Darwinian migration took place with the best and brightest of the center right and further right moving over. What's left on the right at TNZ is pretty much certifiable loons and snot nosed kids of the Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity wannabe ilk. I may be at odds politically with the Red Room crowd, but for the most part I feel like I'm arguing with adults whose world view has been shaped by experience, not some loud mouth radio gas bag.

While T'Bonz and I have had our share of disagreements I have to agree with her that Internet BBS's are not something to get worked up over and whining about "injustice" and "unfairness" is a big-ass waste of time.

For example, Dayton3 seems somehow to have convinced himself that if he can just keep arguing long enough he'll convince everyone in TNZ that he's right and a Biblical paradise will soon follow. Not that there's anything wrong with trying to bring people to your point of view. Knock yourself out, man! But the fact is even if T'Bonz let you say whatever you want to whomever you want, however you want to say it, you aren't going to change the world.

Eminence made a complete asshole out of himself by portraying himself as a Hillary Clinton supporter who kept trolling Obama supporters. Geez, there's a way to make friends and influence people. (How do you feel about Hillary as Sec of State, does that make her a sellout? I'm serious. I'd really like to know how you've wrapped your brains around that one.)

Have fun, blow off steam and maybe you'll get someone to see an issue from a different viewpoint, but if you're going to play Don Quixote and keep charging at metaphorical windmills, you're going to eventually figure out that the windmills aren't going anywhere.

If you like posting over here, fine. It's a great board with a great community. Doesn't make it better, necessarily, but if it's a more comfortable place to spend your free time, that's awesome! But tying yourself into knots because your ideas and views aren't welcome on a bbs, well to coin a phrase "life too's short." Or put another way, who gives a shit, really?
