    I don't get holiday pay.

But I'm off until Monday for Thanksgiving break.

And I get 2 weeks off for Christmas break.

    :)

I do if I'm on the road during a holiday. It's based on payscale, seniority, etc. For where I am now working a holiday nets me about $900 extra.

Is it not the norm to get paid holidays in the US?

When I work on holidays I get time and a half. That's the minimum of what Americans get paid for working holidays.

Holiday pay is standard here, at 8% of your regular paycheck, paid at the end of May, but is that what you mean? I get a Christmas bonus, though, and the office is closed from the 24th until january 4th, which costs me 2 days of vacation.

There is no norm. You only get what the employer gives you. I get ten holidays a year, plus two personal days. It doesn't mean that I get those days off, just that I get 8 hours holiday pay those days and double time if I work the holiday. Some places have no holidays and others may not be open for holidays, so all it means is a short pay week for those people.

I get 25, plus national holidays, plus any time that the VC is kind enough to give to us (like 19th Dec - Jan 5th)
Of course its even better for some people who work here who only work during student term time, or ground staff who get all of December off.

IIRC there is a minimum amount of holiday pay that workers are entitled to by law. It's probably the same across the EU - 1.5 days per month or something like that.

It depends if you're an "exempt" employee or not. I get paid for Thursday and Friday. If I work either of those days, I get additional pay at my regular rate (not time-and-a-half).

We also have a half day on Dec 24, and the next day of work is Jan 5. That's 7.5 days of paid holidays.

Self-employed, so my holiday pay gets factored into my pay by the accountants.

Which isn't too bad, especially since I now tend to give myself 80 days holiday a year. Try asking your bosses for that :D

I thought most people got paid holidays? :wtf:
Annual leave plus all bank holidays, the week between 23rd - 29th Dec, New Years day, and a few days for Easter, all paid for. Not enough though, I think we need a few more bank holidays, I'm jealous over the number of paid holidays given to teachers and especially those bastard London Underground drivers!

I get 32 days holiday, plus the 8 public holidays, plus one extra day at Christmas, all paid. I can also earn up to two paid days per month flexi-time.
If I work on a public holiday I get a lump sum amount. It works out about double-time.

There is confusion here. The British term Holiday is used for what Americans term as vacation. In America Holidays are not the same as vacation days. I get 160 hours of vacation time plus the pay for the ten holidays and two personal holidays in all. That is better than a lot of places here. Many low wage jobs give no holiday pay or vacation at all and if they do work holidays its payed at the normal rate. My company picks what holidays to give us for days off. This year is the first time we have not had Christmas eve as a holiday, we get the 26th instead. Of course that machines are all running 24/7 through into the new year so I never know what I might be working.

The teachers I know don't get paid for the summer hols, they get paid for the rest of the time with their monthly wages. Other half's on pay-as-you-work contract, so had exactly sod all income for the summer hols.

    Tube drivers though...

Sooner they can automate it and fling Commie Crow and his merry band of fucknuts onto the street, the better.

WTF? Not by a long shot. The "right to work" states don't play that in many occupations.

The worst I experienced was construction in Phoenix AZ:

we only got two 15 minute breaks a day (only one break was paid for) and one of these (the afternoon break) was our lunch. We got no medical benefits, no paid holidays (not even Christmas) etc.

So work at another construction company? Good luck - they were all ran this way. You don't like it, then quit...there's always someone ready to take your place.
