Most people in the US get 10 vacation days to start. After 10 to 20 years, they get 20 vacation days. The number of holidays is generally 6 to 12, depending on the employer.
That sucks And that comes from someone who lives in the country with the longest working hours in Europe
I stand corrected. That's just usually how it is here. Not sure about the rest of the state...or states.
What the brits and some of the people here aren't understanding is that, unless you're a federal or state employee, there's no such thing as legally mandated holiday pay.
I thought it was a legal issue because most of the places I've worked have had the time and a half thing for holiday work.
Nope. That's strictly a matter of your employer doing something nice for you. There may be one or two states with such a mandate, but it's not federal or state law in most states.
Where I am at there is is no law requiring an employer to give a break at all during a work day, not for lunch or anything, and unless you are under 16 years of age there is no limit on the number of hours they can require you to work in a day. I found this out just checkin into whether they can require you to be on call on your own time and give you nothing for it. They can do it. They basically own you.
I get paid the same amount every month, regardless of if I work everyday that month or no days. I earn 2.5 days of leave each month, so 30 days a year. HOWEVER when you take leave the weekends count. So two weeks vacation is 14 days instead of 10. Also I get about 1 4day a month and an additional 3day every other month for holidays and Donsas. Those days don't cost any leave, but then if I tack on days I then have to pay for those days. I get kinda screwed on that. On the other hand, being the Army there are.... cracks, that paperwork can fall through.... I haven't been charged for leave since Basic....
I get 8 hours of straight time pay for all 10 holidays that my company observes whether I work or not. If I actually have to WORK on said holiday, I still get the 8 hours of straight time plus time-and-a-half for each hour that I actually work.
My current contract allows me the 6 major US holidays off w/ pay, plus another week (5 days) paid vacation. Anything additional that I take off is unpaid. Any additional work (such as OT, and/or on holidays) I get regular time pay. This is actually the first contract I've had in 15+ years of IT consulting which actually specifies paid time off above and beyond the legal holidays. Previously, I just budgeted my time off based on what I though I could afford.
Ha, I get 8 hours plus double time for all hours worked. They want me to work Friday and thats a holiday for us here at my work, so I think I will do that. 12 hours will make some good money at that rate.
I get 30 days paid holiday. When it comes to Bank Holidays, it gets complicated - I get four of them, but for the other four, I get two days. So if I have to work one of the first four, I get another day off, but even if I don't work the other four I get another day off for each. This winter, the company has decided to give us Christmas Eve and January 2 off, just because...
I have 9 to 11 paid holidays a year (depends on what day January 1 and July 4 are). Beyond that, non-exempts get ~4 hours of vacation/pay period, exempts get 30 days/year.
The fun and hilarity comes when someone tells you the LAW says you have to give them vacation and paid holiday/holiday work pay.
In the US, banks are only allowed to close a maximum of 3 consecutive days, including weekends. Since the banks are closed on Thu Jan 1, they have to be open on Fri Jan 2.
Eh, I like my job and the pay. I don't care for the calls in the middle of the night and the super long days when I don't really feel like it and have things I wan to do. The real pain in the ass is all the bullshit corporate games that go with working for a big worldwide company. I love working with automated equipment and manufacturing, but there are drawbacks. They been good to a guy with two bad knees though and that makes me work a little harder. I got 4 weeks vacation and been there 16 years. When/if I make 20 then I get another week, plus they have this deal where you can buy two more weeks if you want from your benifits money. That does not mean they have to let you take the vacation when you want to or even at all, they pay you all unused vacation at the end of the year. I still have near 2 weeks unused. I wonder if I could work out another trip for the wife and I back to England for our 20th anniversary next summer? I can't imagine how much that would cost. It was over 5k for the trip 10 years ago.
