Okay, yeah, it's pretty silly but it occured to me so I figure I'll make a bru-ha-ha out of it.

According to Memory Alpha, in the original TOS timeline Pavel Checkov was born in 2245. He started his service aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise at the age of 22 in 2267 (disregarding the fact that Walter Keonig was 32 at the time)

Now, in the alternate time line, caused by Nero's intrusion in 2233, Jim Kirk gets the captaincy of the Enterprise 6 years earlier than he did in the original timeline (he's said to be 25 in the film, Canon says he got the E at 31)

    That's 2258.

When Pavel Chekov should have been 13!

So, laying aside the question of what a 17 year old Chekov was doing on the Enterprise at all, how did he get conceived 4 years earlier because of Nero's incursion?

    Chaos Theory at work!

That wasn't Chekov. That was a time travelling Kyle Reese.

Nero caused Chekov's parents to fuck a lot sooner than they would've normally.

Butterflies and hurricanes man, don't tell me you're nitpicking a movie that drilled a black hole into a planet over a character being younger than normal.

Well I think the entire method and age by which nuKirk got the E is just lidicrous.

Does anyone know what timeline / temporal anomaly seems to have zapped Kirk's older brother Sam?

This movie was made to slaughter these canon debates, and good riddance says I.

Except that the story sucks, too.

Meanwhile I'll be nerdy and point out that there are so many differences that can't be explained by Narda's attack on Kelvin (such as the size and appearance of the Kelvin herself), so I'd have to say that everything in the movie takes place in an AU, including the future bits. That won't stop me from bashing the hell out of the AU, though, the same way I did the majority of the DS9 mirror universe episodes.

So you didn't like the movie - who the fuck cares? I didn't like Legends of the Fall but you don't see me in here starting thread after thread after thread about it.

Some guy watched his planet destroyed and the destruction caused a rif in the space/time continuum and he was thrown back in time and so was the guy he thought responsible for the destruction of his planet only 25 years later and then he forced the guy responsible for destroying his planet in the future to watch the destruction of his own planet in the past.

and, some other things happed to some other people.

    I do.

So? By the same token, I liked it and you don't see me posting thread after thread about how awesome it is and how people who don't like it need to get a life, et al.

Ummm...to the few of you who might have taken me seriously, please note-

while the point I made is accurate, I don't ACTUALLY give a damn, just playing with the thought.

If I'd have been writing the film Chekov wouldn't even have appeared...but I certainly haven't lowere or raised my opinion of the film over shit like this.

I find the gushers just as amusing, since bashing "haters" doesn't do anything but lower themselves. I also find it amusing that they seem to need to have people agree with their opinion, when it's still just an opinion.

No one is bashing the "haters." We just find you guys amusing considering the fact that the movie has been an overwhelming success and is adored by 99.99% of the world's population. Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but this movie is exactly what the franchise needed. This is Star Trek for the new generation; you old geezers can take your complaints and, well, I don't know, shove 'em up your distended rectums. :)

I've seen plenty of it. It's why I got banned from TrekBBS you know. ;)

What I find amusing is that so many people who like this movie so much need to think 99.9% of the world's population agrees with their opinion, or that it would make a difference how many people were able to turn their brains off and enjoy a movie if it still sucked.

    The ADHD shaky-cam generation...

Unless you're 12 (which looks like a real possibility), 27 is hardly an "old geezer". Real nice example of IDIC though, as long as people think like you do.

No one is bashing the haters!?!? :wtf:

On this and every board I frequent, when the so-called "haters" offer dissenting opinions, those who liked the film do nothing but insult them.

    Gee, kinda like that!

The trend continues - people who don't like the film, criticize the film. People who like the film, criticize the people who don't. What the fuck, people?

It's because the bashers are the canon-obsessed nerds who put Star Trek in the entertainment ghetto over the last two decades to where Star Trek was declared dead a few years ago.

Then along comes a really great take on ST, and people are whining it's not post-TNG, that it shows the wrong fonts, the ship is bigger than ships no one outside the fan base knows or gives a shit about, detail 12 conflicts with established canon from episode 312 of the DS9 mirror universe episode where they established that Janesway blah blah blah, and so on and so on, etc. etc. etc.

Seriously -- two groups take themselves way too seriously: rappers, and hardcore Trekkies.

So God forbid someone comes along and plays with their toy and makes something entertaining not just for regular Trekkies, but -- gasp -- the general ticket-buying audience.

Most hardcore Trekkies aren't like you and me, Forbin -- you know, married to real, live women, so they have no idea how great it feels to bring your non-Trekkie girl to a Trek movie and have them enjoy it.

You don't have to make it completely fucking mindless to depart from overly-constraining canon and make it entertaining for people who aren't hardcore fans. And people who need it to be mindless can go watch fucking Star Wars.

Actually, I think it is some of the hardcore TOS fans who have the most problems with the new movie. Just go over to TBBS and check it out.

VOY and ENT fans seem to love it.

Personally, I thought it was pretty good, but not great. And I do want to see another one.

I recognize some of the complaints as valid, even though I liked the film. One can have a critical observation of ANY movie, even if one does like it.

the main complaint I think is valid is when the "fix" is so blindingly easy you have to wonder why they didn't pick up on it-

(for instance, writing Jim Kirk as a guy who had been in the Academy and got pissed and quit rather than a guy who had never been - wouldn't have changed he nature of the character at all and would have more easily explained the promotion)

But as i say, I can do that with any work of fiction so I don't consider it a hindrance worth registering to enjoyment of the film.
