    Just for Kyle and WAB:

    Nu-Trek!

    Nu-Trek!!

    Nu-Trek!!!

Interesting that it did not do too well overseas.

Regarding the International Numbers, Japan has given the movie it's highest honor. They anthropomorphized the ships..

^Partly true, people want to be entertained.

nuTrek did have substance, but it was very much a setup, introducing the characters to a new generation, and for that you can't have anything too heavy.

I was really expecting to dislike nuTrek, but it's a fantastic movie, I just hope the sequels can match it.

Once again showing that I don't always like what the majority likes, and the majority doesn't always like like what I like.

And that the great unwashed masses tend to like crap.

I wonder why Terminator Salvation did so well in non-English speaking markets?

Was there something gained in translation?

And if it did so well, why is Halycon filing bankrupcy and selling the franchise?

I'm indifferent to the box office figures, seeing as I don't really care at this stage if they make any more Star Trek movies.

Interesting to see the inflation adjusted comparison of the movies.

Nemeshit was a huge box office bomb (and deservedly so).

The Motion Picture was a hit despite its flaws.

I wonder if there is a comparison for how much profit each movie made. The Motion Picture probably didn't make anywhere near as much profit as The Wrath of Khan since the $$ spent for development of the second TV series that was never made were included in the budget.

    Chuck sighting!

TMP was 1978. A year after Star Wars. And 11 years after Trekkies have been contenting themselves with 78 episodes.

They could've ran 90 minutes of Gene Roddenberry taking a dump and it would've been a box office hit.

It's good for Treksters & great for ST's EU.

Prior to Abrams` Trek I had Trek written off & at the end of ST's Cretaceous Period.

In light of nuTrek, I'd say ST's Triassic Period ended with TATV, & Trek 2.0 marks the start of ST's Jurassic Period.

The singular thing that all Trek (after Star Trek) has been consistently successful at is milking.

That nuTrek has squeezed every penny from counting methodology and published the boast doesn't surprise me a bit - it's what they do.

Re: Re-Launched Star Trek Film Officially Highest Grossing & Attended Film in Trek Franchi

The Motion Picture has a lot of sentimental value for me. I remember going to the theater on December 7 (I was 13) and finding that no tickets would be available until the midnight showing. I had to wait until Sunday to see the movie -- my folks weren't keen on coming back to pick me up at 3am or so. I spent a lot of paper route money on various TMP paraphenelia (trading cards, Enterprise blueprints, the novel, the photostory, etc.)

It will be interesting to see what the take will be for the next movie is. If you'll notice, TMP did the best of the TOS movies, and its not nearly as good as TWoK. IIRC, something similar happened with the Star Wars movies and a few other franchise films.

It's amazing what novelty will do for a movie. After all, just because a movie makes money doesn't mean it's good, and good movies don't always make money.

I loved this movie. I have two posters of nuSpock in my dorm. I have the soundtrack. I'm buying the DVD. I want to see the next one, but I'm afraid it will suck. I really don't know if they can do well once the novelty has worn off.

Too bad too. It shows how peoples' tastes have so degenerated. No longer is content important. Just give them explosions, hot people, and boobies and they're happy as little clams. You know what the difference between Trek IX and Insuckrection and Nemeshit was? Geriatrics.

On a side note: Remember the movie Idiocracy? ---PROPHETIC.

Amen. They should actually just count ticket sales. Not dollars. How the heck ET made all that money on half priced kids tickets is beyond me.

Using either tickets or inflation adjusted numbers, I beleive that Gone with the Wind would be all time winner.

Yeah. For the record, I think that there are five other movies in the series that are better than it. Box office take reflects marketing budget more than anything else.

I'd love to see them take a real chance on the next film. Get someone to write a dark intellectual script - a"Balance of Terror" feel if you would - and defy the stereotype.

    But they won't.

Not to say there weren't Trek TV episodes that had some intellectual heft behind them, but have any of the movies ever attempted to do something like City on the Edge of Forever, or The Visitor or whatever smart episode you want to use? Nope. The movies since Khan have all been sci-fi action stories with Trek bits.
