No way this can be legal. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/01/16/health-care-mandate-applies-amish/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%253A+foxnews%252Flatest+%2528Text+-+Latest+Headlines%2529
Not just the Amish, the unions have got themselves a deal to avoid the taxes on their health plans too. Separate but un-equal, here we come! I look forward to seeing special water fountains and other facilities for the un-insured.
Ones religion should not exempt one from contributing to the common good, they enjoy the benefits of living in a free nation protected by military sons and daughters paid for by tax dollars, why should they not have to get a paying job and work like the rest of us?
You do realize Amish pay taxes too, right? Everything but social Security because they don't collect it. They pay sales taxes, income taxes, real estate taxes mm
Maybe because they already have jobs and work harder than most of us. Also, you can't reduce the Amish down to "ones religion" anymore than you can Jews.
Personally, I'd like to see the Amish and the Mennonites (Amish-lites) go back to wherever the hell they came from. They stink, wear abhorrent garments, refuse to serve the military when called upon by the draft. If they want to opt out of social security tax and military service, maybe they should go buy one or two of those hundreds of islands for sale in Indonesia. They can start their own damn country since the rest of us are offensive to them and represent the epitome of sin. I can just imagine their flag. shudders They may be pacifistic, but they are also the most smug, condescending people you could ever hope to meet.
You might have skipped over the part where they rely on each other. A guy gets sick and can't afford a doctor, everyone else in the community has to foot the bill, either directly or though their mandatory contributions to the church. (Do you think tithing is optional in a religious community?) It's basically socialism, with the church taking the place of Congress.
Too bad you weren't around during the Civil War. I might actually have a decent country to live in... south of Pennsylvania.
That's been the cases in many smaller churches in other religions through history. A community rallies around someone who absolutely can't help themselves, as opposed to just shelling out dough willy-nilly to everyone to just plain doesn't want to work on the claim that everyone is equal. With socialism, you're mandated to level the playing field. With this, it seems like there's more social pressure to help those that really can't help themselves, although your scenario wouldn't surprise me either.
I believe I would comply. Not moving to Mexico or Canada, and forcing the Uncle Sam to choose between letting me in or excluding me for the THC in my whiz would almost be worth the price of admission. I'm just gonna hope the cause is more WWII and less Vietnam.
