Incidently, you said before that nobody had the right to be offended in a free society. Well, thats quite possibly the most idiotic comment in this thread yet. If people have the right to say what they like then they also have the right to express being offended as that, in itself, is protected by the concept of free speech. Unless free speech doesn't give anyone the right to say "hang on, fuck you, I'm offended by this". Saying that noone has the right to express dissatisfaction with something is akin to an oppressive regime telling people how to think and behave. That is not what a free society is about.

It's true that a certain oversensitivity toward Islam does seem to have pervaded the general zeitgeist.

For instance, as I read somewhere earlier, one only has to look at the censorship in last year's 2012 movie to get one example -- the producer admitted that while he had no problem destroying the White House, the Vatican, and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio, he didn't want the same done to the Ka'ba in Mecca out of fear of fatwa. That there even exists such a fear, shows how much further we have to go IMO.

That said, I won't be drawing Mohammed today because 1) I suck at drawing but also 2) I think the religious beliefs of any people should be respected and not mocked. (This is one reason why I generally avoid religious coverage/discussion here in the first place). I guess I just don't feel comfortable purposefully mocking Muslims in the same way that I wouldn't comfortable purposefully mocking Jews or Christians.

And while that's how it is for me, personally.....I also get why some people are doing it....and I do laud those who have a far greater appetite for the scathing than I....for taking a stand toward equal opportunity mockery.

There is no correlation between religion and race. To equate one with the other is a false analogy, because one can choose to be religious; one cannot choose to be a particular race.

Secondly, Newton's Third Law is often applicable to social and political dynamics. Any group which promotes hatred, violence or bigotry can expect hatred, violence and bigotry in return. This is why many of the drawings of Mohammed posted on May 20 were extremely insulting. It is why many people speak of doing violence to Fred Phelps and his followers. It explains the high levels of schadenfruede when an anti-gay activist is caught engaging the services of a "rent boy."

Conversely, this also explains why exceedingly few are inclined to violence against Quakers, or the Amish, and why when incidents against them occur, there are extremely high levels of sympathy towards them.

That said, it must be pointed out again that moderate Muslims who are offended by this event are only offended because they choose to be because it is directed against the extremist members of their religion. Christians as a whole are not offended when someone attacks Phelps, or if a Mormon polygamist is arrested, nor do they claim to be victimized. Nor should they.

Based on the above, I believe El Chup's criticism of the event to be invalid.
