Raymond, what this shows is the true purpose of the convoy: to cause a confrontation.

If shouting something stupid is all it takes to cause a violent confrontation that leaves nine(?) people dead, then you've got bigger problems than the "true purpose of the convoy."

If anyone in this country was being stabbed and shot the perp, you'd be sure they would not be facing any charges. If any US military personnel opened fire in the same boat they'd not be facing any problems, and yes, the US Navy boards foreign ships at sea on a regular basis.

I'm glad we can agree the notion of hate crimes are ludicrous. And that someone shouting something like "nigger" is no reason to incite violent reaction.

When people are this willfully stupid, I can't help but question their motives. They started shooting after being attacked while boarding the boat. When you start beating armed soldiers with clubs, they shoot back. When you start tossing them into the sea, they shoot back. When you try to forcibly take their weapons, they shoot back. What this new info suggests is that the "aid" boat was intentionally looking to incite a confrontation so they could get fools like you, Liet and Rick to foam at the mouth about the evils of Israel.

Was anyone on the boat trying to put a flower down the barrel of a soldier's rifle? That would be cool!

I'm not a maritime lawyer, but I'm pretty sure if you're on a boat in international waters and an armed third party tries boarding, you have the right to defend yourself.

Sentencing always factors in intent. Good hate crime laws are simply an extension of that.

I can see it being a mitigating factor if someone gets punched in the nose, but not so much if several people end up shot to death.

They were trying to run a blockade. Israel considers the group to be a threat. All they wanted them to do was divert to an Israeli port so they could be properly inspected. You can cry all you want about international waters, but they weren't hiding their intentions of going to Gaza. Why would they let a potential threat enter territorial waters?

Seems to me that's the kind of message you can deliver without boarding.

A serious threat would have merited sinking. If they were safe enough to board in international waters, they would have been safe enough to board just inside territorial waters.

But if you had paid any attention to all the various stories about the order in which events unfolded, you would know that "shouting something stupid" (and a reference to wanting people dead just on the basis of racial hate is more than just "stupid") did not "cause a violent confrontation."
