Hey mike, I came home unexpectedly once when my Dad was in his cellar workshop. There I was heading for the fridge when I turned and saw Dad standing there with his .22 rifle. He said "Oh, it's you," and went back downstairs. I shrugged and got a soda.

    What a horrible incident. :jayzus:

Wrong again. You came across like an idiot, I called you on it, and you proved I was right.

Yeah he was only carrying a .22 rifle.

He should have had something more substantial to shoot you with.

    I know. When I confront intruders I use either a .45, .357, or AR-15.

It makes my mother proud to know I will protect my wife so well. :)

    In other, related news...

    http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/08/03/2500919/no-charges-in-home-invasion-shooting.html

So my question is, why didn't the burgler use the mad ninja skillz to disarm the homeowner?

In many scenarios, a firearm may actually be useful. This is no doubt more likely to be the case where the defending party is properly trained in their use.

That said, maybe the homeowner heard the break-in (the man did use a tire iron) and prepared himself. This is far different than a skilled break-in.

Believe me, Dad with a .22 (and it was a single-shot .22 short rifle) was a match for anything.

Well, according to actormike, your dad is a despicable person and should be in jail.

Fortunately, rational people will not agree with mike on that point...

You have a fair point. Even though I've had proper training, I would probably be no match for a ninja sneaking up on me. :(

To start with, my right not to own a gun or my right to express my opinion on the subject.

You're a moron. You called me on nothing. Tell me how your statement was in any way related my post.

Ah. I see your problem. You have limited reading comprehension skills. Nothing I've said in the thread even remotely relates to what you are attributing to me.

Though Jenee and I agree on the issues, she doesn't seem to understand what she is saying, what she is thinking, or why she thinks what she thinks.

Jenee understand exactly what she's saying. If you are not understanding what I'm saying, ask and I will clarify.

Making assumptions about what I know or don't know lowers you to the level of apostle, kirk and now Captain J.

My bad. Am I not supposed to connect this and the other thread? The one that says if I don't own a gun after the apocalypse anyone who does have a gun has the right to come and take everything I own.

It's not that you would suddenly have no right to your own property or that someone else would have the right to come and take it, but that (in my view, anyway) organized society exists first and foremost to protect those rights. No organized society, no organized protection, so you're left to defend your own rights with whatever means you have at your disposal. Firearms would be a good thing to have on that day.

I'm not denying they would - in either thread.

That doesn't stop everyone from jumping on the bandwagon and telling me that not owning a gun "is stupid" and that owning a gun would save my life if I'm shot while sleeping - or while holding a dog and someone else shoots that dog.

Well calling XYZ "stupid" is one thing. Saying you do not have the right to XYZ is something totally different.

I don't recall telling you what to do in your life. Your comment about shooting a dog was dumb. A gun will not help if you're sleeping or caught unprepared. However, a gun will increase the odds of survival in many cases.

Freedom allows you to decide if you want to own a gun and allows others the same right of decision.

Saying a gun wouldn't have helped in this situation is one thing. Accusing me of not knowing how to defend myself, my child or my home is something totally different. Putting words in my mouth and telling me I think an intruder would take away a homeowner's gun is still another.

That doesn't stop some people from making that leap, either, so ...

Did you read the OP? The article said the guy was sleeping and apostle thinks if he owned a gun he would have survived the attack.

My "dumb" comment was saying the liklihood of him surviving would be the same as if the guy who'd been shot by his wife while holding a dog she shot surviving.
