Why are there no violent Native American nationalist movements in modern times?

Of the "bomb places and shoot people" variety?

When you look around the world, there are quite a number of places where the population consists of a majority of settlers, and a minority of indiginous shunted into a corner somewhere, and in many of those places the indiginous maintain a violent nationalist / self determinist campaign.

For that matter why are there no violent Aborigine or Maori nationalist movements in Aus and NZ...

We spooled up the conveyor belt and launched them to Mars in the space submarine USS AssOtter.

There's occasionaly a minor skirmish in Canada. A while back the Nates blockaded Duffy Lake Road, a few hours away from me, to protest logging and their rights or something.

We broke their spirits. We destroyed their culture and national identity and moved them thousands of miles from their homeland, robbing them of any reason to fight.

    There's a lesson somewhere...

While we all realize the answer you're looking for is "Muslins!!!" Native Americans are kept largely complacent through a generous, Federally funded welfare system, at least in Canada. Why get off the couch and fight the power when you can sit back and wait for your cheque to come in? Then the ones that do want to work enjoy the Canadian version of affirmative action when it comes to certain jobs, usually cushy government ones. And casinos!

So basically, we bribe them. :async:

Their condition is not so poor as to warrant rebellion, and, in any case, armed rebellion would be futile.

In some places, it actually is. Some of the reserves have third world conditions, complete with the massive corruption in their governments. There are places that don't even have clean water or sufficient housing, despite receiving millions of dollars a year.
Not necessarily. Limited violent rebellion draws a shitload of attention to whatever they're upset about, and actions like roadblocks have forced private companies to grant them concessions in the past.

Who would the NAs rebel against anyway? Their own corrupt tribal governments, or the US government?

I have found there are basically two types of Indians, them that go out and work for a living and ask nothing of no one but proudly stand on their own, and them that stay drunk on the res and make the occasional beer run off the nation to resupply. I live close to the Cherokee res(eastern) and most of them I have ever dealt with were just plain rednecks like the rest of us here in the hills. Most don't have any problem with them and there are some who lie and claim to be part Cherokee even.

By definition, it isn't because it hasn't. Note the bolded part. :diacanu:
    I don't disagree.

I think the whole "reservation" system is a sham. It hasn't preserved the culture of the American Indian in any meaningful way; it merely makes them dependent on the taxpayer and/or exploited by members of the tribe who know how to work the angles (casinos and what-not).

I think it's high time that a plan is put into place to begin the integration of the remaining Indians on reservations into mainstream America. The Stone Age cannot be held in "reserve" living next to the Information Age.
Groups can use all kinds of tactics to draw attention to their cause, true; but insurrection on any large scale would be put down very quickly and very firmly.

Define "modern times." The American Indian Movement was involved in some violent incidents in the '70s. Look up the Wounded Knee Incident or Leonard Peltier.

Actually... yeah. We (by which I mean our ancestors) didn't originally realize that common European germs would be so destructive to the people living in North America.

Despite the entire thread being about Native Americans, when I read this post I got it twisted around and thought about North Korea instead. (Seriously, I even Googled biological weapons in the Korean War.)

I swear I'm not actually that historically ignorant.

The historical wrongs done to Native Americans (I'm talking mostly U.S. here) are so deep and horrific that there's really no way to make them right. As far as "biological warfare" well, the European plagues were a weapon of mass destruction although an unwitting one. The real devastating force was alcohol. I've heard of reservations where the alcoholism rate runs something over 75%. In Montana, the native tribes like the Crows play basketball growing up and their high schools dominate the sport, yet so many of the kids are alcoholics by the time they graduate that college coaches don't even bother recruiting them. (I have read that basically Native Americans are born with an alcoholism gene. I'm sure that's oversimplified)
The casinos at least offer some a way to make a living. The Florida Seminoles have done so well that they bought the whole Hard Rock Chain (It's now the "Seminole Hard Rock") and the members have more money than they'll ever need--literally and good for them, I say, but I doubt it's really making most of them happy. Color me a confused white man when it comes to what we can do (if anything to help them).

I am in the camp that believes we wiped out 95% of the Native-American population by accident. The book 1491 is fascinating; I encourage you to read it.
