Try it. Make an argument and back it up. Explain why my opinion is wrong.

Or are you of all people taking the idiotic stance that all opinions are equally valid and that they can never be wrong.

How many children have you raised? Like I said previously, if you ever need advice on how to raise children, just ask an old maid.

Sometimes, getting their attention is exactly what it takes. They have to know that you are willing to go to the nuclear option to stand your ground.

Have I ever spanked my kids? You can bet your ass that I have. Not often, because my kids know that I'll do it, so they don't usually push it to that level.

This kid sounds like she's been a spoiled brat. I noted in the video that he says that she has been disrespectful of him, her mother, and her step mother. Ah hah! There's been a divorce! All too often, the children of divorced parents can be the worst for a number of reasons. I also noted that he said that one of the shots was at the behest of her mother.

Sounds like all of the parents involved have had enough of her bad behavior.

See while I'm more willing to give weight to a parents opinion over that of non-parents I don't totally dismiss the non-parents out of hand.

Same here. In Anc's case, I tend to dismiss his opinion on a lot of things because, like a lot of academic types, he's spent far too much time in the classroom and far too little getting real world experience.

    To correct her attitude.

    An improved attitude from her.

She won't be trashing her family on Facebook anymore.

    WE?

Violence against inanimate objects is a national tragedy. :dayton:

Apparently, it has been quite modified.

She can no longer trash her parents publically and she has more time to focus on the things she has been asked to do to earn her keep.

It's been laid out numerous times. Nobody cares if you don't like the answers.

Sigh.... ENGLISH MOTHERFUCKER. DO YOU SPEAK IT?

She has been taught a lesson in consequences, one she will not forget.

The laptop could morph into a zombie and hunt the family down.

    :jayzus:

Because you don't have kids and hopefully never will so you're not in a position to fuck them up forever with your intended mamby pamby, limpwristed parenting style.

You don't have a horse in this race, Gomer.

Your opinion is about as worthless as Kikey Mikey talking about being straight or garamet talking about giving forthright, direct answers to questions.

Now, if someone would please quote this, I would appreciate it. I'm pretty sure Gomer has me on ignore. Opinions contrary to his own upset him.

Also, after doing some thinking on the subject, I've noticed some interesting divisions along the usual lines.

The outrage seems to be mostly expressed by those who either are part of or support the Moocher Class in this country. At first, I thought it was strictly down to a 'has kids/doesn't have kids' line, but as it goes on, people without kids and even what most of us would consider kids here, don't seem to have a problem with it.

Could it be because the parasites see this is an assault on their beliefs?

"Why should she be required to earn her keep if they are rich and have people to clean for them? How could this redneck bastard DARE take away something from her? Who cares if he bought it for her! It was HERS!"

Thanks to this father's actions, it is quite possible that one of their own may have been stopped for pursuing a life of expecting entitlements. Even worse, this video that illustrates the consequences of expecting things to be handed to you and disrespect could stop others from joining the ranks of the Moocher Class. Across this country for the past several days, there are countless parents showing this to their kids. They'll remember it too.

Would you like it better if I had said that one doesn't have to have done a thing to observe that the thing is being done incorrectly?

    :dayton:

What you're asking is that we justify, in your eyes, the actions of a stranger. Account for his accomplishment, define his goals and defend his methods. I'm sure someone who gives enough of a shit could placate you with a bunch of douchebaggy academic-speak that makes people feel better about saying "I approve because I just fucking do," but that's it, I approve because I just fucking do. Deal with it.

I'm not the least bit interested in indulging the new-agey self-help pamphlet mentality that's defending the girl's acting out as "just being a kid" while condemning the man's actions as ineffectual dick-waving without anything approaching the same level of apologism. Yes, she's a kid and he's the adult, but if you think he acted with a total lack of self control, it's obvious you can't relate to his mindset. But let's not mistake your inability to identify with some kind of meaningful insight.

The fact is that I'm not in that man's shoes, but can easily relate to the position of "I've exhausted every civilized recourse, and now I need to destroy something". All the "civilized" parenting bullshit some of you have laid out FAILED this man. Maybe this did get her attention. Hard to say without observing her on a daily basis. But at the end of the day, the only demonstrable harm done is an affront to someone's inflamed sense of decorom :dayton: , and that balances against a chance at waking Princess the fuck up about the way life works, and whether any whiny pacifistic douchenozzle wants to recognize the value or not, a harmless outlet for suppressed anger is a good, healthy thing.

I know I'm late to the party but here are my thoughts:

Research based: This type of parenting, if you want to call it that, instead of borderline sociopathic bahavior is called "Authoritarian". It is of limited effectiveness in teenagers, with a very specific exception, teenagers that live in environmentally dangerous areas (a drug riddled project, war zone, etc.) if that isn't the situation, it more often than not will cause more problems than it solves.

Thought, Common Sense Based: The role of the parent is to act as an adult and the example of appropriate adulthood. Shooting anything that isn't for hunting/sport/self defense is not appropriate adult behavior. We have many laws that address this. This is not an effective model of behavior. I often complain about the copier at my job. My boss has yet to arrive with a bazooka to blow it up and say "See, now you don't have a copier at all!"

Thought: Public humiliation isn't an effective behavior modification program. If that were true, in the age of youtube, facebook, TMZ, we would all be on our best behavior. We are not. The death penalty has never been proved to be an effective deterrent to murder.

Thought: Is she working at his clinic? What kind of clinic is it? if she is doing that along with school it's probably appropriate to compensate her in some way.

Thought: yes, she could be crazy. She could be the daughter of an abusive parent (which given Dad's behavior I find more likely) and acting out. She could be a perfectly normal teen complaining about her parents to her friends. We won't know the truth of it based on any of this video.

For every mean, spirited, "brat", "out of control" teen girl you claim, I will claim a teen girl ,like me, (A student, scholarships, virgin) who was once beaten like I was in prize fight for not doing the dishes "right". They just weren't shiny enough you see.

Except when it's Libertopianforge, and you mention either guns or child-rearing, much less both.

Libertopianforge, OTOH, can have opinions on lots of things where they have no experience: foreign policy, military strategy, holding public office, teaching, being wealthy, etc., etc., etc., and that's okay. In fact, the less knowledge and experience, the LOUDER the opinion.

Because if you SHOUT REALLY LOUD on the Internet, you're full of win.

Well, the daughter slaughtered her entire family and school yesterday, and was arrested on the way to Vegas - she said she was going to try whoring, as she felt like she had no choice after how involved her fad got in her life.

    Yep.

So he destroyed it in a hissy fit with a lethal weapon. He's supposed to be the adult, not the child.

There aren't laws about any number of shitty things you can do to your loved ones. That doesn't make them good ideas.

And if your thought process involves 'I can get away with this because there is no law against it' you probably need some serious parenting advice.

Then don't give it back. Is that really such a difficult concept.

Not only that, take other shit away, and make her earn those back. He has all the power, he has all the money, it's his right to do those things, and it wouldn't have involved his family getting harassed because the 'IT professional' *SNORT* didn't understand the difference between putting something on Facebook with privacy settings and putting it on Youtube where there are no privacy settings, or expectations of any sort of control whatsoever over the content.

Putting anything up on the internet is a bad idea in this context- but he should have understood the difference.

And there wouldn't have been if the dad chucked it in the trash or donated it to a needy child.

Instead he threw a hissy fit.

She learned a few things - and many of them weren't the ones he intended to teach.

She's also going to be the girl in the laptop video FOREVER.

Her dad was a dumbass. End of story.

He caused negative actions to happen to his family because of his own immaturity. Shooting the laptop was assinine - putting it on the internet was atrocious.

The gun was involved in an action that he intended solely for the express intention of disciplining his child.

    No ifs, ands or buts.

If you don't acknowledge that, you are being intentionally obtuse.

There was no need for a gun to be involved in this, and if the guy chucked the laptop in the river this wouldn't have gone viral.

But the redneck had to kill the laptop because he was mad at his kid.

He admitted as much on his facebook posts.

Oh, and the dad continues to defend his actions (what a shock).

But a) he says he will never do anything like this again, because the notoriety is so overwhelming that it is affecting his family and b) that was 'probably the worst day as a parent he's ever had in his life.'
