The Indianapolis Colts' breakup with Peyton Manning is official -- ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that Manning will be released Wednesday -- and it displaces any of the most extreme examples of business ruling sports. http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/33874/on-the-end-of-the-manning-era-in-indy Hope he can still play and hope the Dolphins go after him and get him.
If Jerry wasn't so enamored with Romo, he'd probably get in on the bidding. With him out of the mix, though, Dan Snyder is just the kind of guy to spend big bucks on a quarterback...who may never return to his best form.
Even a hobbled Payton is better than anything we have in DC right now. But the Skins ought to go after RGIII
shootER agrees: It'd certainly hobble your salary cap, that's for sure. Why should Dan Snyder start caring now!
Personally, given this deal and the nature of his injury, I think now would be the time for him to show even more class and retire while it's still a 'graceful' move for him, put on a suit, and go to the announcing/analysis/coaching booth as you KNOW he will eventually. For most athletes there is no graceful exit from sports- they hold on waaay past their prime until they are forced out. Peyton has a chance to do it right, unlike Favre.
If they can get him for a decent price, RGIII learning for a year or two behind Manning would be fantastic. Look at how well Aaron Rogers turned out with that model. BOBW.
Miami needs to sign Peyton Manning, that will leave the Redskins/Daniel Snyder free to unleash a bidding war for the Rams #2 overall pick in order to get RG3.
The difference is, Peyton was still a top 3 QB in the NFL the last time he stepped foot on the field. If he can play, he's elite.
Let's see, nice weather, Larry Fitzgerald as a target, play inside a dome, a team that went .500 last year with two below-par quarterbacks, and a fan base desperate for a future hall a fame QB.....oh yeah and he gets to throw to Larry Fitzgerald... ...and don't forget about number 11 here in AZ.
Arizona makes a lot of sense, as does Miami. Both have decent offensive pieces in place with up and coming defenses, both are warm weather. He already owns a house in Miami, so that is a plus there. No way he goes to Washington. Lots of negatives there. Snyder is a pain in the ass. He'd be in the same division as Eli. No line, no receivers, no established running back. And a coach that is controlling and has his little boy run his offense - seems unlikely that Shanahan is going to put his kid aside and let Manning run the O, which is what Manning will want to do like he did in Indy. The Jets and KC make sense too. Personally, if I was Manning, I'd be talking to the Ravens. They are one completed pass away from the Super Bowl, and it makes sense for the Ravens to take a risk on him as they have 2 defensive HOFers that will end their careers about the same time as Manning in Lewis and Reed. If Manning is healthy, he's a far better QB than Flacco, who is solid, but not special. Should be interesting.
He can, until his line fails to protect him and he takes another shot that turns into a career ending injury or flat out cripples him. Now I know you can say that is true for anyone playing the position, but Peyton had a pretty serious neck injury- dude needs to be careful (after 14 years on the field!!) and watch out for his health.
I'm guessing he goes to the Dolphins. Apparently their owner or GM has always been a huge fan of Manning and Peyton already owns a home there.
This was kind of classy. It gives Peyton one last chance for another SB (Indy is years away from that again) by allowing to sign with a team that's a QB away from a good shot. That said, I think Peyton is a moron for continuing to play. With his injuries, his chances of getting a lifelong debilitating injury increases far beyond the normal (already high risk) for NFL players.
People hear "neck injury" and they immediately assume the worst, but the fact is that Peyton's specific injury is of a type that leaves him neither no more nor no less susceptible to further injury than anyone who had never had his injury would be. It's a non-factor.
Exactly. If his neck was that fragile all those doctors would not have even dared to risk their careers and possibly their medical licenses by telling Peyton and the NFL that he can play ball. And you can bet every single team that is even thinking of looking at him will double check those doctors and then require Peyton to go to other doctors for the triple check. I think he's coming down here to Miami. Right after the press conference he flew down here to rest and relax. Claimed he didn't know what teams were talking about him. Yeah right.... He knew exactly what is going on in the league. It was hilarious because as soon as the media found him they were tailing him in a helicopter. It was like the OJ chase but this time no dead bodies were involved. It's Miami or Arizona. I see him in Miami. Slowly the team is coming together we just need that quarterback that can take us over the hump from mediocre to reliable winner, play off contender. Oh and the owner finally understands that we need a quarterback and he's willing to pay for it. No way he goes to the Jets. They are a crap organization.
While a Dark Horse, don't count out Seattle. We're a young team that is just starting to come together (going from 2-6 to 7-9, and 5 of those loses were by less than a TD) but can be a top contender with the right QB. Paul Allen has the money and Pete Carroll is the master when it comes to recruiting and paying top talent.
What about the offensive line? I've heard Manning doesn't want to go to a team where he might have to fear for his life.
Skins are out - but then, I think they already knew that, which is why they just paid a king's ransom to draft RGIII. They get #2 this year. Rams get #6 and #39 this year, their first in 2013, and their first in 2014. Not as bad as it looks for the Skins (though they certainly paid through the nose). RGIII's contract will be small due to the rookie wage scale, and there's lots of talent out there in free agency at WR and interior line to help their offense. If they can get Vincent Jackson and RGIII, and fill an interior line spot, their offense is all of the sudden quite respectable and heading upwards. The Rams of course made out like bandits, and if their scouting department doesn't totally flub it (like they did all through the 2000s) they should be set for quite some time.
ESPN claims that it's down to the Broncos and the Cardinals. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7...-denver-broncos-arizona-cardinals-sources-say
ESPN is claiming the Dolphins are now out of the picture. The Dolphins are now apparently flying Matt Flynn in for some talks. The teams left on the table are the Broncos, the Titans, and the Cardinals.
