Now, of course, none of the passion in the preceding two posts is going to budge a generic-science-fiction fan in the slightest -- not one iota, in fact.

It's not meant to, because it can't. JJTrek is the best they've ever known, and lens flares, shakycam and slo-mo explosions are the width and depth of their idea of science fiction. So, there's no making any headway there.

No, the preceding two posts exist for one reason, and one reason only: Because maybe some day, somewhere way down the line, some kid who's curious about this "science fiction" thing will read them and maybe -- just maybe -- say, "Wait... that's not all it was? There was more to it than that?"

You kids can say whatever you like. I started watching Trek with TOS, first run, first season. I participated in the "Save Star Trek" letter-writing campaign. I've been a Trek fan longer than most of you have been alive.

You do not have some kind of monopoly on what makes "true Star Trek fans" (i.e., those who share your tastes). You are only showing that you reject one of the fundamental philosophies of Star Trek, tolerance of those who have different tastes. "If you do not agree with us, you are not of the body!" was not presented in a positive light in the Trek universe, in case you didn't notice.

I never did like Voyager or Enterprise, but that didn't cause me to go around insulting those who did like them. Why? Because I can deal with people having different tastes from mine.

Something you might gain by learning.

Really, I go around insulting people who like the movie by just criticizing the movie?

Yeah, and you have exactly zero ground to stand on yourself, because you are very much of the "If you do not agree with us, you are not of the body!" mentality and regularly attack people for not agreeing with you about this movie. :bailey:

Not true in the least. I attack people for the very thing Async is pointing out. You don't like the movie? Fine. I really don't care. But I take exception to the fucking idiots who prance around and insult anyone who doesn't conform to their vision of what "Star Trek" is and/or should be.

And I take particular exception to the fucking idiots who sit on their high horse and turn their nose up at everyone else because they don't understand the "objective" criteria with which to critique a film.

 Oh bullshit. You've been giving me shit and all I've ever done is criticize the movie. For the longest time I even went out of my way to not be personally insulting back to you or anyone else who's been that way toward me. And all over a movie. :jayzus: That illustrates wonderfully what a dedicated fanboy you are - you just can't accept any criticism of a movie you like.

Wow. I just did something I've rarely if ever done... that is, dig up three-year old posts.

Captain X, I doff my cap to you. You, sir, are an exceptional troll and I feel the fool for falling into your trap.

Right out of the gate, you admitted you'd never seen the movie even though you lobbed criticism after criticism.

You also attacked anyone who even remotely said it was a fun flick.

Wow. Pathetic Trek nerds who still continue to argue with each other over which show was better.

Don't forget kids and robots - and we have everything Gene Roddenberry railed against when he created Star Trek.

Voyager grew on me, Enterprise never did. TNG actually took two full seasons to finally grow on me, I hated the whole thing initially. The bellhop uniforms, the hotel lobby bridge, the crappy looking, totally improbable ship, the bald French Captain, the rehashed scripts of the first season, a Klingon on the bridge crew, a ROBOT AND A KID??? - everything.

I don't understand why you feel insulted. Really.

Like I said, I got over my objections to TNG after the second season. The show grew on me. Probably something about finally, some original stories instead of rehashed TOS scripts.

Hmmm, and yet I've been included in statements like this from you before.

    That's pretty pathetic, actually.

Yeah, you see, there's this thing called the internet, and there's information on there that you can read, like say about a movie and what it's about. :moreyouknow:

Also, it's been a while since I said that. Do you honestly think I haven't had an opportunity to watch it for free since then?

No, see, unlike you, I don't personally attack someone for having a different opinion about this movie, I just correct them about it actually being a bad movie.

And I stand by that - I can't respect peoples' opinion when they think Abrams Trek is flawless and scoff at the simple fixes that would have made significant improvements to the movie. As for being stupid, well, that is the big excuse used by everyone attempting to defend the stupid things in this movie - it was done so stupid people would understand or relate to it better. :bailey:

Still, how nice of you to show how deep your obsession runs by digging up these old posts. :techman:

But not nearly half as pathetic as you and the fantasy world you've created around yourself. I'm only dragging myself down to your level by continuing to respond to your dreck. As such, this is WAB signing off from this 'tard fight.

And there's your mistake right there.

You can't "correct" an opinion. An opinion is neither right nor wrong, it is an individual's personal feelings about something.

An opinion that clashes with yours isn't "wrong", it's different and it's the height of hubris to believe your own opinion is an objective reality that everyone must conform to or are "wrong".

Oh, there's an easy fix for that. Just become an Objectivist, then all your opinions are reached by REASON and LOGIC and therefore become FACTS, upon which your opinion and objective reality become one and the same! :shakes:

I don't need to be an Objectivist for that. It just comes natural to me:

    - If I think it, it is obviously true.
    - Truth is reasonable.
    - Therefore, all of my opinions are eminently rational.

And it is my opinion that anyone who disagrees with me is a drooling idiot! :nyer:

Not really, because what I'm doing is making the distinction that Abrams Trek is an objectively bad movie. I'm not really making a statement as to others' opinions, what I'm doing is correcting the notion that Abrams Trek is a good movie when it isn't. "Fun" or "entertaining" perhaps, but not good. I'm using well established criteria to make that determination as well, so it's hardly stating my own opinion as an objective reality. You can keep trying to convince yourself otherwise, but all you'd be doing is making the same mistake you accuse me of making.
