I said "people no longer cry for gun control." I didn't say the media and unscrupulous politicians and media whores don't. They do every time.

You're smart enough to keep temporizing because you know where I'm going with this.

The weapon is the focal point. You cannot imagine walking out your front door without it. The word I'd use for that is not a word you'd like.

I'm not afraid of words. By all means, please use it. I don't know where you're going with this.

It has nothing to do with bravery. I learned my lesson a very, very long time ago. We were having some people over for steaks cooked on the grill and I forgot something. I was very casually dressed. I grabbed my wallet, my keys, and I bolted out the door headed for the grocery store.

I went in, got what I needed, and headed for the checkout counter. Who did I land behind? A giant of a man whom I'd been in a knock down drag out fight with the night before. It took four of us to subdue this dude. I was still sore and covered with bruises. If he had turned around and was as pissed as I was sore, I would have been hosed.

I realized what was going on and slipped off to the back of the store until he was gone. From that day forward, I carry a gun with me every time I leave my home.

Now, don't mince words. I wouldn't have been some sort of Billy Badass had I had a gun on me, but the situation would have been very different had he wanted to start something.

    [/thread]

Many people simply forget that help isn't a block over in rural areas. There are areas of this county where it can take 30 minutes to reach running balls to the wall with lights and siren blaring.

    See above.

The smilie I use in every post?

Seriously, I don't know where you're going with anything but I'm open to any question.

I don't criticize your choices. Why do you criticize mine?

And you don't even point out that the US overdefines/overreports most of its crime stats...
Britain is known for not being as forthcoming. (According to the statistics people at both TBI and FBI...)

Because it suits her political ideology.

This country has the right to bear arms. No one should have to justify their guns or ammo unless they are committing a crime with them.

No one thinks it odd that people pay out for all kinds of insurances for unlikely scenarios that can happen to them, so why is it so strange that people would want to be armed in the unlikely event a violent crime happened to or around them?

No one is this ignorant. I don't know why all the disingenuous questions and coy run arounds, but it boils down to people want to feel safe and in control and they have every right to in this country. And no one is forced to have a gun if they don't want one, either.

    Personal choice...it's a good thing.

I'll bite. Some examples but not all of them

Last summer. I was walking the dog with the wife and kids. To dogs form a neighbors (thank chavs) got loose and came right at me and mine and attacked. I didnt have to fire. My dog kicked ass and also got in the way.

Last November. Took my 11 year old son hunting. He had his rifle, I had mine. We bagged a hog. My buddy and his son bagged a hog and a doe.

Two weeks ago. Three guys came to my front door. They were selling a "fix your cracked windshield" program and wanted me to come outside. Something was bugging me. They were edgy / nervous. I kept my foot firmly planted behind the edge of my front door. The kids were in the other room. They started to move towards the door. I started to lift my shirt. They saw what I was doing and stopped and said "well have a nice day sir". I closed and locked the door and immediately got on the phone with the sheriffs office. Turns out that the SO has been looking for these guys because they have been doing home invasions.

Mind you I live in a stereotypical sub-division that is supposed to be low crime. I also work from home and its amazing how many of the "door to door salesmen" come by during the middle of the week (average of once a month) but yet never on the weekends when most folks are home.

Oh and Sunday. I took a family shooting for the first time and they loved it. The mom who had been very anti now wants to make her first purchase. Oh and I shot the best I ever had with a pistol that day.

Ideally no. We would live in a world where violence was non existent.

    However we don't.

We live in a world where the life of myself, my wife, my kids, my neighbors is innumerable times more valuable than the life of anyone who intends us harm.

Does this mean that my carrying is a 100% guarantee that should something happen we will come out unscathed? Nope. But I will stack the deck in my favor in anyway I can to make that a real possibility.

Are you diagnosed? Have you been adjudicated to be mentally incompetent? A harm to yourself or others? What is your history concerning violent actions? Have you been convicted of a crime? Are you medicated and show no signs? When in either state what is your behavior? Just a loud mouth at times and others do you sit there in a semi depressive heap? A better example would have been if you were a diagnosed schizophrenic.

Oh really? Lets count the hypothetical inventory someone could have

6 different types of shotguns for trap, skeet, sporting clays, 3 gun shooting, upland and then wetland hunting
6 different types of rifles / carbines for action, 3 gun, small game, medium game, large game shooting
5 different types of pistols for IPSC / USPSA open division, IPSC / USPSA production division, Slow fire precision shooting, 3 gun, Hunting

That is 17 firearms. Mind you that our hypothetical is only interested in competitive shooting sports or hunting. When it comes to these activities firearms are like golf clubs. Each has a specific function and design at which it excels at. Likewise pressing one into the role of another results in mediocrity. However he isn't too smart. A competitive shooter should know that he really needs to have back up firearms to take to events in case he experiences a malfunction. Please note that he is single. What if his wife or kids also enjoyed the shooting sports? Finally though he could use many of the above types for home defense, he will probably want at least a dedicated pistol and rifle for that purpose. So his total would then reach 19 if he were single and didn't have any back up firearms.

Don't forget that he will need a shit ton of ammunition as well to practice with, let alone compete.

    Is that still an arsenal?

In the states a few weeks ago I saw a couple of old guys having a fight on the bus. I was enjoying watching these old bastards swear at each other& start swinging punches, and shout, 'i am a vietnam vet!'

It was all good entertainment till i thought they might start pulling out guns on this bus! Fortunatley they didnt, but what sort of society is that, that you cant relax and enjoy watching two old timers knock fuck out of each other!. :bergman:

No more than carrying a spare tire for your vehicle. I haven't had a flat in over 15 years, but I still carry a spare and religiously check before long road trips that I have the needed tools to do a tire-change. Is that excessive?

I honest to god lost count, but let's see.

    Handguns:
Six combat handguns, because I had to try one of each caliber when I first got into shooting to see what I liked best.
    A .22 semi-auto target pistol and a .22 revolver for plinking.
A cowboy .45 Colt because it sure looked like fun.
A .44 magnum single action because it's a .44 magnum and everyone should have one.
Three reproduction black powder pistols which I bought when I was making a western with my film school friends.
My great uncle Wally's 2 shitty old revolvers handed down.
    Dad's WWII Luger.
A shoebox containing Dad's father's Iver Johnson .32, S&W model 1, Harrington & Richardson .22, and random parts of other junk guns.

    Long guns:
    A pump shotgun, a Mini-14 and a .22 semi-auto.
A small collection of three western-style lever action reproductions because they are FUN to shoot!
    Uncle Wally's gallery .22
    Dad's double-barrel 12 Ga, 1903 Springfield and WWII Arisaka.

Plus an unknowable number of AirSoft, MGC, and other "toy" guns.

Most of the hand-me-downs don't get shot. Sentimental value only.

Yes. You should be manly enough to pick up the car by the axle and run to the nearest service station. If Bugs Bunny can do it...
