The guy traveled around the countryside with his own hooker in tow so hell yeah he was hitting that shit.
Fourth century? Its still just legends passed down and is unlikely to have anything to do with actual history. Just like the rest of the supposed knowledge about Jesus
Again, people see what they want to see. If you'll look closely, it says: "Jesus said to them, 'taketh my wife......please. For she hath implored me to take her somewhere she had not yet been, and thus I showed her our kitchen.' Then Jesus looked out upon the crowd of his followers, thanked them, and encouraged them to feast heartily upon the veal."
Writings have been found that may show that Jesus had a wife. It may be fact or not. But we do know that any such thing was wiped away by the church. It seems that the early stories are a bit different than what we have today. I find this very interesting.
There's been plenty of discussion about how the early church was very picky about what it put in the "canon" version of the bible. There have definitely been references to Jesus having a wife before, which is where the DaVinci Code conspiracy theorists get their fodder from.
Even earlier stories would have been even more different. What do we know about 400 years ago? When it comes down to it, not as much as we think. And we know much much more about 400 years ago than people in 400AD would have had of 0
Julius Caesar's accounts of his campaigns in Gaul are considerably older than the gospels (accounts of Jesus's life) yet most historians take good ole Julius's writing as an accurate account of military history.
The older I get the less I believe in stories that are filtered down thru multiple layers of agendas. Human nature hasn't hanged much in 20K years or so. I use 20K years ago as a starting point for humans to have definitely arrived on the scene as an entrenched, in it to win it separate species. We had fire, basic tools, abstract thought, pretty much the basics. And the first fucking thing that human society did was start spinning and embellishing stories, and it hasn't stopped yet. Thus I have zero confidence in any of this bullshit from any faith be it Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, whatever.
Its likely his 'message' wan't his, but a conglomeration of lots of messages twisted and reconvened by scholars and movements.
There's really no basis for considering anything written after the end of the 1st century about Jesus as in any way factual. That includes this. And none of the early stuff mentions a wife.
"Extraordinary Claims Require Extraordinary Evidence" Carl Sagan This isn't. Not to say he didnt have a wife but this isn't enough evidence on its own.
While I find the idea that Jesus had a wife interesting, I would say that a scrap of some forgotten, non-canonical gospel from the 4th Century is so far removed from its subject, that I don't think you can draw any useful conclusions about Jesus' marital status from it. RickDeckard is right: nothing we have that is known to be nearly contemporaneous with Jesus mentions a wife. And there aren't--to my knowledge, anyway--any mentions of a wife or documented controversies about a wife in the century or two following.
Actually, historians do take exception to some of his accounts (which were written with his popular image in mind), but few dispute these accounts were in fact written by Caesar. And, unlike the Gospels, Caesar's commentary on the Gallic Wars was not subject to revisions by centuries of followers who had theological points to make.
The extraordinary claim is that some hippy leftist revolutionary who hung out with prostitutes didn’t have any lovers. I'd say the burden of proof is on the establishment.
Yeah, I'm still waiting for some primary sources documenting that there was a historical Jesus. Until then, it's all just second-hand, third-hand, etc. storytelling that happened to have been written down.
Most of human history is second hand, third hand, storytelling that happened to have been written down.
UH oh!!!!!!!!!better watch out as those Christians start rioting, attacking embassies and murdering people and Obama's DOJ arrests the writer who said that....OH wait they don't do that they might get mad and argue on the internet and the writer has nothing to worry about from the DOJ...whew!!! that was close.
Will you quit shitting on the rug? Adults are trying to have a conversation. Go outside. Go before I get the rolled up newspaper.
Wow. I have to hand it mlong. We go from Jesus Christ possibly having a wife to Barack Obama in 17 words.
Perhaps you have missed some major shifts in attitude over the last 4-5 years or so. also, you forgot about Bulldog and Ward, absent though they may be. And Chaos, who's definitely active. But that said... you have to first ascertain validity which is often in dispute long after the initial claims you then have to notice that a lot of things were written in the centuries after Christ that may or may not be a reliable record of his actual words or deeds so proof someone told a story about it is not proof it happened (yes Dicky, I know that applies to the whole book) So in that context, this doesn't prove anything at all BUT if he did - so what?
I never got the big deal about it being important Jesus didn't have a wife. All I can think is that since a husband and wife have sex (in theory anyway), that means Jesus would have used his holy naughty bits, and some can't tolerate that idea.
