I wouldn't be so much concerned about the pollution as I would be about the possibility that that vehicle might be on fire and about to explode.
I don't get whining from the OP. Complaining, sure, but totally relatable complaining. Not only is that much gunk an eyesore, but I can't help thinking it stunk somethin' foul.
Oil smoke tends to be light gray. My first thought was that it's a diesel and one or more injectors are shot.
Black smoke is definitely not from burning oil. I say either Elwood's suggestion, or more generally, incomplete combustion, which could be a timing issue.
I couldn't have stayed behind that guy. Zel would have had to pull over a few minutes and let the dude get miles ahead or find another route.
