Just got back from a midnight showing, good fun film.

Don't want to give away any spoilers but suffice to say if you enjoyed the first two (and The Avengers) you'll like this. There are quite a few points where the film seems more fantastical than the first two, but given the fact this takes place in a post Avengers world it works.

I did not enjoy the 2nd film. Will I like the third?

I was surprised how much the 2nd film sucked given that it had the same cast, apart from the black guy, and the same director. Plus it had Sam Rockwell who I really enjoy, except he was awful in that flick. It definitely failed to live up to the massive expectations brought about by the first movie.

The trailers for the 3rd look good though, I have to say.

Though it was clearly inferior to the first film, Iron Man 2 was a decent superhero flick, I thought.

Iron Man 2 was in a difficult spot - Iron Man was testing the waters of the whole Avengers shebang, and as such was the only one with a sequel prior to The Avengers so it could only really do so much.

I find it a lot better if you view 1 and 2 as one movie split into 2 - sort of like a Kill Iron Bill - as 2 pretty much flows from the first and ties up a few bits.

Looking forward to seeing 3 on Sunday

I liked both. True, 2 was like Rex Kramer, a different breed of cat. But the way I figure it, it delivered on what it promised: a superhero flick you don't have to (and probably shouldn't) think too hard about.

I hated 2 the first time I saw it. But after about a year I decided to give it another chance and was surprised by how much better I liked it on the second viewing. The banter between Tony and Pepper was excellent, and there was lots of action. My only complaint is big party scene where Tony is drunk in the suit. I just hated that scene with a passion. Also, Sam Rockwell's character could have been more slimy, and there was not enough Mickey Rourke.

Iron Man 2 was nowhere nearly as awesome as the first, but not a bad entry in the franchise, either.

I loved Iron Man 2. Sam Rockwell was amazing. Tony Stark's privatization speech to Congress in the beginning gave me an erection.

I intend to see #3 ASAP.

I also hated that they ditched Iron Man 1's soundtrack in Iron Man 2. That score was awesome.

I don't see the problem with 2.

Yeah, it rehashed the structure of 1, but it had enough new stuff to be interesting.
War Machine, the suitcase suit, the new element, the expanded lab-wide holo-projectors, Black Widow, Mickey Rourke, I thought it was fine.

Okay, the trailer/plot promised Tony in grave jeopardy, and everything was fixed too easily, but...3 looks like it's going to fix that.

Put me in the same boat that thinks there wasn't anything wrong with 2. I felt it was a good follow up and liked the increased tension between Tony and Pepper.

I liked 1 because it gave the origin of Iron Man, but 2 took the concept and ran with it for me.

    So did The Avengers.

    I look forward to 3.

    A big load of MEH.

Promising start, but descended into boring CGI porn.

    Loved it.

Excellent mix of drama, humour and action. The Pepper bit at the end battle was obvious, but that was more than made up with Stark's interaction with the kid. Most films of this type would've stuck in some mawkish humbling crap, but not here.

If anything it set the quality summer blockbuster bar that bit higher than The Avengers/Avengers Assemble managed.

Best Iron Man solo outing IMO, and a worthy sequel to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
Worth watching solely for Stark & Rhodes as Riggs and Murtaugh.

What the hell is up with this crap with you Brits getting to see all these movies first?

Anyway I look forward to seeing it next week.

I like both 1 and 2 but I would have liked two better if it had concentrated more on Rourke vs Stark and less on the slimy CEO guy.

    So no answer? :ua:

But I've been reading good reviews that say this is the best Iron Man yet. Better then Avengers.

I can't wait to see it in a few days.....

Wow, this movie pretty much crushed every other movie before it even launched in the US. Made over 300 million and took 79 per cent (!) of all global box office in the few days it's been out.

Together with the US box office it will scratch the billion mark pretty soon. Very exclusive club, that. Guess I'll contribute €20 for the theater and Blu-ray since I have enjoyed all those Marvel superhero flicks a lot, starting with the X-Men.

Saw it last night. Pretty good--can't wait to see it again--but, if I'm honest, I'd have to say I was slightly disappointed. In fairness, my expectations for this one were VERY high.

Maybe I'm jaded. The film did throw an awful lot of great stuff at the audience. The bit with Air Force One--which pays off with a couple of nice surprises--was especially entertaining. There are several good twists and, yes, Kingsley's Mandarin is...one to remember. Good to see William Sadler and Miguel Ferrer in something new. And Guy Pierce is delightfully slimy and gets a number of great moments.

There is a post-credits bit, but it's not that big a deal. Tony narrates parts of the movie and you get to see to whom he was telling the story (you might be able to guess if you think about it).

I liked Stark/Rhodes as a take on Riggs/Murtaugh; they have good "buddy cop" chemistry. The final battle sequence was dazzling and the surprise at the end of it is quite satisfying, even though you'll undoubtedly see it coming a mile away.

Tony gets a kid as an ally in the middle of the film and their relationship is refreshingly unsentimental. I love Tony's reaction to the kid revealing that his father left.

Better than 2 (which I liked) and almost as good as 1, but in a different way. Almost felt like a Bond movie.

Saw it tonight. Yes it totally buried #2.

That's one way of putting it. They did put one hell of a unique spin on it. The spin worked. I'm just disappointed that they took that route.

I too liked the interaction with the kid. I also like how they avoided the schmaltzy way the movie could have ended.

Just got back from it. I liked 2 better. While 3 is a fun ride, there are some pretty annoying nitpicks in there. For example:

Other than that, I am stone-cold in love with Gwyneth Paltrow now. Homina homina homina!

Planning to watch Iron Man 3 tomorrow.

But I re-watched the first two tonight in preparation. Both very solid movies.

I wasn't a huge fan of Iron Man 2 the first time I watched it, but upon further examination... its a very good follow-up. It holds up a lot better the second time around.

And Scarlett had my eyes glued to the screen.

Yeah about that spoiler, for the first part the same thought hit me in the shower this morning as well. WTF was up with that? For the second item, yeah it was one, masterfully done IMO, but it was one just the same and it tick met off.

Having said that, I still feel that this was a better movie than #2

I loved it. It took some risks, and to me, it pulled them off beautifully.

The two things discussed in the spoilers above both make sense to me, if you take the whole movie to truly be an interpretation of the Iron Man myth as an exercise in "man creating his own demons", as the voice-over keeps telling us. And what they did with the Mandarin might just be the perfect and most honest way there is to deal with the problems that vintage character implies from a contemporary, more globally informed perspective.
