I don't follow Alabama politics - what transpired here? What is the significance of these two particular political opponents? Where does Trump come into the picture?

Strange was appointed by the governor to take over Jeff Sessions old seat when he left to join the Trump administration. Some people have alledged some improper quid pro quo occured but so far nothing has been proven. Moore is a complete fuckstick and former state chief justice but he got removed for refusing to obey the SCotUS rulings. He then got reelected after getting removed but again acted like a fuckstick and got removed again (I believe that time he was also disbarred which means he lost his law license and could no longer run to be a judge).

His being a completely incompete fuckstick made him popular with evangelical extremists because Moore would often oppose things like gay marriage claiming the bible trumped the SCotUS rulings. In short, the man is a complete disgrace but he tells nutjobs what they want to hear so the nutjobs love him despite the fact that he is thoroughly incompetent.

Actually the reason he is running for the Senate is because they found a way to keep him from being a judge by suspending him instead of removing him which would have opened his position and allowed him to run for judge again. He is settling for senator.

That's...only about 50% correct. Governor Bentley, now disgraced following his resignation from office, appointed Strange to fill the seat for the remainder of Session's term, which he will do. The President can't nominate Senators. Secondly, Moore did not resign as Chief Justice to run for Senate. He was removed from position, twice. The first time because he refused to obey a court order to remove the Ten Commandments monument from the Supreme Court Building's grounds. The second time because he refused to obey a Federal Court ruling on gay marriage because he claimed, erroneously, that Federal Courts shouldn't trump a State Supreme Court. The Alabama Bar Association finally revoked his license and membership, preventing his third run. So, he's looked for other means of weaseling his way into the public by running a failed campaign for governor and now a successful campaign for the senate.

I've become slow to judge one's motives. But, the preponderance of evidence has lead me to believe that Roy Moore is not an evangelical at all. He's merely a money and power hungry opportunist that knows what his base wants to hear. Sound familiar?

Roy Moore is one of the only people I have ever met who truly follows their principles and sticks to them. He made principled stands on the 10 Commandments Display and on Gay Marriage. Despite immense personal cost, he stuck to his guns.

Interacting with him personally, I have found him to be personable, thoughtful, and inquisitive. He is very intelligent and passionate about his causes. The first time I met him was at my father-in-law’s funeral; the families are close. I’ve met him a few other times.

He is one of the finest men I’ve had the privilege to meet.
