Yeah. I don't buy it either. The reality is that Solo had too much bad publicity about it. From the star can't act out of a paper bag (justified or not that was what was said about him), to the firing of the directors, to the reshooting of a huge bulk of the movie. Once that stuff got out in public most people started feeling that Solo was going to be a dud so why bother going to see it? On top of that, there was a lot of people who were upset with TLJ. I know it's not fashionable on this board with some people to believe because they love TLJ and TLJ still did gobsmacks level of money but a lot of people where moved solidly into the meh category for future Star Wars movies. Solo was the first victim of that meh movement. Especially given its problems behind the scenes being aired out in the public. If Avengers: Infinity had gotten people upset and an upcoming Marvel movie had production problems like Solo we'd have seen the same pattern in the box office receipts. It really was a perfect storm for Solo. Fatigue doesn't happen if you're putting out good products.
Let me add that if Disney fixes up Star Wars and the next movie is great that will cure a lot of this so-called fatigue. If the next movie, however, is mushy like The Last Jedi we could see Star Wars go on another ten-year hiatus.
Well, even I said, Episode 9 is the Infinity War of Star Wars. It's not just wrapping up Rey's trilogy, but all 9 saga films. They have to smash this one out of the park, and shatter the stadium lights. They can't afford to fiddle-fuck around on this one. If JJ thought he had pressure on his back before with TFA, ho-ly shit!
Don't forget that the replacement director isn't A-list talent. Howard can turn out a decent film, most of the time, but if this project was going to soar after all the bad press about the dealings behind the scenes, it needed someone who could make people forget all that, not someone who can deliver a by-the-numbers picture. Which is about all Howard can do.
True but I think everyone understands there is no way they would have been able to get someone huge to turn Solo around. Those A-list directors are already working on projects of their own or they don't want to possibly hurt their reputations by salvaging a movie that is in bad shape. I can't think of anyone who blames Howard. He did what he could to salvage the film.
Maybe. We don't know if any were asked. Oh, I'm not blaming Howard. I would imagine the thinking went something like this: Executive A: Shit. This movie's a mess, we've got to find somebody who can turn it around quickly so we can at least recoup some of our losses. Executive B: Let's get Howard. He knows how to hit certain points, can stick to a budget, and his bad movies don't completely flop at the box office. Executive A: And he's a fan, who's worked for Lucas before. Sounds good. It's like picking a Toyota to be your daily driver instead of a Ferrari. You know you'll be able to get to work every day, but you also know that you won't be able to have the kind of fun you would, like if you drove the Ferrari.
Both Lucas and the current team had the same agenda, to create a movie successful both creatively and financially. To do that they needed a main character to which the majority of their audience could relate as he or she lived out their fantasies of adventure. In the 1970s, that meant a wholesome aw-shucks farmboy. In the 2010s, it means something different.
Because there wasn’t an SJW movement in the 70s and Anakin is a male character, you had no choice, but cast a male for the role in the early 200s. Also, the SJW movement was in its infancy then. Although, Lucas did get grief for having racist characters like Jamaicans and Asians.
Man you really have to be a sad, sorry sack of shit if you watch movies through the prism of left/right politics. Like take a break and just enjoy yourself, you fucking loser
Finally got around to watching it today. First watching and impression, liked it better than TLJ. I did find it dragged in spots, but the action sequences were pretty well done. The big assed creature by the Maw, having out skinned alive was a bit more than I expected to see. I can't quite accept Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, he just doesn't quite hit the mark. On the other hand, Danny Glover hit Lando Calrissian so spot on that if I didn't know better, I could swear it was Billy Dee Williams on the screen. Two things that I did enjoy, and they were almost background details, the shield generator assemblies being lifted on Correllia, and when Han was signing up, the recruitment video was playing a "happy" version of the Imperial March. And when L3 gets integrated into the Falcon, I'm guessing that's how the Falcon "has a most particular dialect".
Loved it! 100000x better than either TFA or TLJ. It actually felt like a Star Wars film. I don't know how they are doing it so right with the "A Star Wars Story" films and so wrong with the actual numbered episodes.
Yeah, well, all you late stragglers shoud've seen it opening weekend when it would have mattered. Now you're not getting your Obi-Wan movie. That protest really backfired, didn't it?
Well, if by success, you mean you want all joy in the world to die, and be replaced by demon rape. Cuz that's where this is going.
Don't mark the question as dumb and cower away, @Diacanu. Answer it. How else can I, or anybody else, for that matter, know what you are talking about?
I was messing with you, because I hold you in intellectual contempt. I would have thought that obvious, but I guess there you go proving me right some more.
