I was hearing about this as far back as when Hannibal (the series) was still on air. If you don't know, Martha De Laurentiis owns the rights to Hannibal, Hannibal Rising, and Red Dragon, but not Silence Of The Lambs. It's why you can't get a collector's set of all the Hannibal flicks, Lambs is over on its own little island, and you have to collect them separately. And it's why Clarice couldn't appear in the Hannibal show. Anyhoo, the rights holder to Lambs (and the character of Clarice) wanted to do a series set in the decade gap between Lambs and Hannibal for Lifetime. That never came together, but now its been greenlit by CBS. So, hooray! More adventures in the Hannibal-verse! https://www.cbr.com/silence-of-the-lambs-sequel-series-confirmed/?
They acted scared of Hannibal, I wouldn't have minded having both shows on at the same time. M.A.S.H and "Trapper John M.D.", co-existed. *Googles* Oh, Trapper John got sued. Even though Trapper John's loophole was they were spun off from the movie, not the show. Well, lawyers care about that shit, but the fans didn't care.
Meh. The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon (Michael Mann version) films were masterpieces. Everything else in the Hannibal-verse pretty much stunk like ass -- including most of the Thomas Harris books, which I read. Never saw the television series and have been meaning to watch it. I heard it got canned early.
For once I agree. SotL is one of my favorite thrillers and Red Dragon was an excellent detective story, but Hannibal Rising was kind of boring. I think at the time I had watched X-Men: First class already been out and I remember thinking that Magneto's backstory was kind of similar and I like Magneto's story better. Though I looked it up and Hannibal Rising came out before, I think I watched both around the same time. Anyway, I'll be excited when I see a trailer, I hope they get a good show runner for it. Funny, Bryan Fuller was the show runner for Hannibal, I wonder CBS would rehire him for this?
Rebecca Breeds is Clarice #3!! https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/s...lkin-joins-american-horror-story-more-a173472
1. The series should be called Starling. 2. If it runs 6 or 7 seasons, the final season should remake Hannibal.
Hardcore fans like you & I would like that title better, but CBS has to grab the lazy boomers that only saw Lambs on VHS rental back in 91. The's only one indelible Clarice in fiction, and they need people to recognize her instantly to get bums in seats.
That's what I get for not reading the link. Yeah, the show will suck. Wonder what shows and movies he'll rip off this time? Wonder what out of character thing he'll have Clarice do and say? Wonder what won't match up from Silence of the Lambs?
So, let me get this straight.....since I dislike a particular writer to the point where I never have liked any of his work, it's not reasonable for me to extrapolate and guess that I won't like his upcoming project?
All I hope is that it does not try to depict transgenderism as some sickness where you want to make a skinsuit out of women. That sort of put me off of the first silence of the lambs. I much preferred the later ones where they actually got some cunning in the plot rather than shitting on the trans community for the taboo of it all.
Hannibal says right in it though that Buffalo Bob isn't a real transgender, but some other more dangerous pathology.
I still found the movie to really work on that taboo and create a perverse stereotype. Maybe the books were better about things, but the books certainly did not hit the public consciousness like that movie did. Also when it came out there was no internet where people could go and find out real information so it really did a disservice to the attitude of people at the community at the time. There was no real counter educational movement to coincide with it's release and that was one of the graphic salient images of a crossdressing man at the time. So I am all for fuck the silence of the lambs for doing that and using the trans community taboo to sensationalize something they could have done other ways. I would point to natural born killers which did not have to insult the trans community to get interest in mass murderers. American psycho didn't use the taboo of the trans community to bring it's portrayal of the psychopath to the screen. However, silence of the lambs sure as fuck did, and it was lazy writing.
Hmm, yeah, I suppose it is problematic in an Apu kind of way... Hannibal the novel had Verger's sister be a lesbian because she hated men, because Verger raped her. Ridley Scott dodged that mess by cutting the sister character out, and having Cordell the butler fulfill all her plot duties. Brian Fuller made the sister a real lesbian, and made her an empowered character, and even said in the commentary (about the novel version) "sexuality doesn't work that way, I really wish Thomas Harris hadn't done that". So, one presumes the showrunners of Clarice will be woke enough to fix things too.
It was really a timing thing with me in that way. Had it come out today that way I would have some faith that young people would research and know that this is not what being trans is about. However, back in the day it came out it left me feeling really sick of it. when you the at something like the cell where a similar thing was done you see they could have made sure that the stigma did not fall on the trans community the way lambs did. That is why I enjoyed the later movies more. I can give credit to SotL for doing a good job with being creepy and intriguing, but it did not need to kick the trans community in the face at the time to be titular.
As it should be. With the exception of Lambs and the Michael Mann adaptation of Red Dragon, all the other Hannibal films and books are complete fucking dreck. Never saw the television series but I heard that was good.
^^^ Didn't realize this was an older thread and I had already posted something similar upthread. At least I'm consistent.
Oh good, seems like a TV series silence of the lambs. That is just what we need, a bunch of episodes telling us transgender women are serial killers who want to make a human skinsuit out of you. How edgy and awesome. It is almost like CBS all access does not want a TG person to ever be able to use a public restroom again. Here is hoping this shit gets cancelled back into the trash heap Silence of the Lambs belongs in.
