I don't think platforms like gofundme should not allow for legal defense funds. I do think people need to be smarter though. Perhaps names should be collected and anyone contributing to people using gofundme to skirt legal responsibility should be targeted for remedial education on what is right and what is wrong.

Please help me understand this. What is the specific language used by progressives, that anti-trans people are using? Also, what sort of "control" do people psychologically 'take" by trashing a bathroom?

I do not understand this series of tweets at all.

I might be missing context here, because I've recently really only come by when summoned directly, but it seems to me that this is a very interesting point for one reason: It assumes that the publisher would continue to have an interest in publishing a work not protected by copyright. Usually, longer copyright terms are defended by the opposite claim, i.e. that distribution would no longer be feasible economically. Clearly, both can't be true at the same time, but both can certainly be true of different works at different times. To me, that reinforces the idea that one rule does not fit all; so universal rules should be limited and simple. In any case, the only way to avoid the situation described in that tweet is to abandon copyright limits altogether, and I have yet to meet anyone who wants that.

And you don't consider this to be a problem?

This calls for drastic action if not corrected, and nothing short of banning Packard will suffice until you reconsider :bailey:

We need to come up with some sort of "anti-ban" that requires him to come participate in our childish name-calling brilliant debate at least once a day. :async:

I've mentioned this before (ages ago), but there's a highly sought-after book in the machining trade called Elmer's Engines. Not too terribly long after it was first published, the author died, and the publisher went out of business. Nobody has any clue as to who the rights holder for that work might be. Specialized publishers have said that there's simply no economical way for them to track down who might hold the rights to the work, assuming such a person can be found. On eBay, copies of the book have gone for as much as $1K. As of this moment, there are copies on eBay ranging from $200 to $350. If you can't afford that, tough shit. The odds of one's local library having a copy of the work are essentially nil. Were the rights sorted out, a copy would retail for less than $30. Who is being served by this? Only the handful of people who have printed copies. Potential publishers are missing out because a work highly desired by members of a particular trade can't have new editions. People who want to buy the book for shits and giggles, if not because it would help them in their profession are SOL.

Just having a way for publishers to print a book and put a standard amount of royalties into escrow for works where there's no clear copyright holder would be a massive improvement over the status quo.

I was going to ask: If no one knows who has the rights to it, why doesn't someone scan it and make it available as a .pdf for a reasonable price? But I see that's already been done.

This would appear simple. Scan the book and put the text out as a PDF freely available. If a rights-holder DOES exist and cares, they will show up pretty quickly with a lawsuit. ;)

If not, you've helped a bunch of machinists get a needed text AND pissed off a bunch of capitalist pricks.

Assuming, of course, that rights holder knows that they have the rights. It maybe that the paperwork showing someone that they hold the rights is gathering dust in a forgotten filing cabinet of a lawyer and won’t be found until they close their practice.

You want to see a boilerplate American Evangelical's brain lock up like Google Chrome with a thousand tabs open? Tell them about Israel's "Green Card" system for the vaccinated. The country is still in total lock-down unless you have a green card that allows you to resume a mostly normal life.
