Yeah, I only skimmed a little bit of it too, but it made sense to me. There was advice in there like "don't just assume the prerequisite knowledge exists" and "quality not quantity" that I wish my own teachers had followed. Little Ray knows how to do long division, but if you try to make him prove it a hundred times in a row in one class, he's going to get bored and cranky. Little Ray completely tuned out for grade 8 and 9 because he was severely depressed and that's why grade 10 math and science so confusing to him, but he's too embarrassed to say it out loud. Fill in those gaps, give him the appropriate textbooks from those years so he can figure shit out and he'll be fine. Don't just send him to get glasses or assume he's not trying.

Little Ray needs to get the fuck over himself and absorb the fact that the world does not revolve around his delicate fucking emotional state. That, also, is part of a TRUE education that prepares one to function in the real world. The fact that the school is expected to deal with baggage like that at all is a shortcoming of the parents.

If an aspect of education can be shown to favour one group over another in spite of there being no commensurate differential in native potential then that is a shortfall which should be addressed.

Not only for ethical reasons but because that shortfall is reducing the effectiveness of the service being provided.

I don't see that demonstrated. I see it treated as a default assumption in justification of systems purporting to make it less pronounced according to highly subjective measures.

Objectivity cannot be "shown" to favor one group over another without holding one of those groups to an objectively lesser standard.

That reduces it to whether you measure effectiveness by way of rewarding merit, or by way of advancing the greatest number of students categorized as "disadvantaged" by some quality other than scholastic achievement.

At exactly what age do you think "you fucked up, weakness will not be tolerated, prepare to die in the cold" should become the standard for how we treat human beings?

Also, it's not an "education" if you don't have a chance to learn from your mistakes and continue to grow. That's just consequences. And don't give me that "cautionary example for the other kids" bullshit either.

If we really wanted children to succeed in the real world, we'd focus on teaching them how to kiss ass, look busy when they're not doing shit, and gleefully stab other people in the back. The real world isn't a meritocracy where only the smart and capable survive. It's a junior high cafeteria writ large.

And it will remain so as long as we keep celebrating this popularity contest/call out culture bullshit.
