Balls. I will assume that you and I both agree that individuals do not have the right to own nuclear weapons. If I'm a nutbar terrorist who wants to make a nuke, I cannot buy a large chunk of the materials necessary to DIY my own nuke. I can't buy, for example, a plutonium core. I can buy stuff so that if I have a lot of other things, I can make my own plutonium core. Of course, if I do so, I'm going to get a visit from the Feds to see what I'm up to.

But I can easily enough walk into any gun store and buy the weapons and ammunition needed to carry out a mass shooting. Because freedom. If I have a felony, I can get around any restrictions by going to a private seller. Oh, right, Ukraine is an example why civilians need access to things like AR-15s, because they need to be able to fight off an invasion (or perhaps a hostile government). Yet, most of the shit Ukraine is asking for to fight off the Russians are weapons civilians aren't allowed to own in the US. Mind you, if we wind up with a tyrannical government in the US, that government isn't going to have nearly the same kind of logistical issues that the Russians have when invading Ukraine, or the US had when dealing with Iraq and Afghanistan. It's not like Russia had military bases scattered through Ukraine, or the US has to launch bombing missions from the opposite side of the world, when they want to bomb fucking Kansas, compared to places like Iraq and Afghanistan.

    Interesting.
The other thing I heard from someone that makes sense to me is the importance of community. She said "People who feel a sense of community don't go shooting up a place"

You mean like ensuring that everyone has access to mental health care? Or that Red Flag Laws should be a thing? Because, please, point me to where the Libertarian and Republican parties are advocating for such things. I'll wait.

I could support Red Flag laws *IF* they provide sufficient due process and safeguards against misuse.

I'd seriously consider mental health solutions for people who show signs of danger.

The people who do these things tend to be loners, isolated. It's rare that you hear of the captain of the football team shooting up a school. It's always that oddball that no one talked to, who said weird things, etc.

Just sayin', don't expect me to be a collaborator on the solution if I'm too busy defending against it.

    Define "due process" and "misuse."

And how would these be paid for? Because I know people who are schizophrenic and have absolutely no business owning a gun, but since they don't have a felony, if they manage to hold down a job long enough, they can afford to buy one. What they cannot afford to do, however, is get mental health treatment. And none of the people who could actually get them into mental health treatment have the money to hire a lawyer to start the process. (Only family members/SOs can invoke the Baker Act, and that takes money.) But, if the schizophrenics lived in a country like the UK or Canada is a thing, getting those schizophrenics into treatment costs almost nothing.

Friendly suggestion to not respond to @Paladin. We know he isn't going argue in good faith, and will instead spend the coming weeks figuratively pissing on the graves of these dead children.

Is there a clip from Anderson Cooper's show? Or is the person Tweeting it a journalist?

Not saying that this Tweet is false, but I've learned not to trust Tweets (or Reddit, or really any social media) in the immediate aftermath of a crisis like this.

    Maddening.

Also-I remember after the CO shooting happened schools made an effort to try to start including that "loner" etc etc...but at what point does it feel like the people are blaming themselves for the actions of one person that fucked up. They need to hold responsibility for themselves. Sure it is a great idea to include everyone, and I whole heartedly believe in inclusiveness, but if the opportunity presents itself for an individual to be a "part of" and they refuse....

Maybe we could just lock up any kid who doesn't get the votes of at least 60% of their classmates in a popularity contest. Y'know, so we don't have to contemplate any affronts against the Holy Gun.
