Tweet: As Truss succeeds Johnson, I am reminded of a time I had norovirus on holiday. I had been wracked by vomiting until I wished I was dead, and when it finally subsided, along came a merciless onslaught of diarrhoea. https://twitter.com/cbrookmyre/status/1566878906573115395?s=21&t=P7GNv_wRZZ2aBp2PfzCrmA
It's the Tories. We're IN this fucking mess due to 12 years of their misrule. Changing the idiot at the top doesn't magically reform them of being a bunch of hopeless cunts.
Not sure if you're being serious. But Truss has said that she wants to cut taxes for the rich, increase military spending, abandon basic social freedoms, and decimate the civil service. Her means of addressing the energy crisis appears to be to borrow £100 billion and give it to the energy companies. She's appointed a minister in charge of energy who is a climate change denier, one in charge of the NHS who opposes abortion, among other cabinet abominations. And she's being advised by the most right-wing ideologues that it's possible to find. The pound is already dropping like a stone. The UK will be lucky to avoid major social unrest in the near future, not to mention some or all of a deep recession, high unemployment, a currency crisis, an inflation crisis and a banking crisis. She won't be as sleazy as Boris but one hopes her tenure might at least be short.
The rise of Truss will likely be bad for Tories in the next general election. Labour's advantage in opinion polls continues to widen. https://www.politico.eu/europe-poll-of-polls/united-kingdom/
Yeah. But now you live in the land of criminals, whores and pirates… which apparently are making a come back…
These charts ought to be big news. The UK is on course to be overtaken by Slovenia and Poland in terms of average living standards. With the multiple crises they face and Liz Fucking Truss as PM, they look likely to get their wish of no more immigrants very soon.
This can’t be real can it? https://twitter.com/luiseach/status/1571849023601926145?s=46&t=TWLiV35RxvMNyNwgKGLLDA
Yep. Either the two Aussie (sorry, Hood - convict) hosts were woefully uninformed, or they were going for comedy. Though to be fair I fucking wish I and the rest of the UK had no idea who Liz Truss is.
In a totally normal and not at all worrying move, they've refused to release the economic forecast that goes with their forthcoming mini-budget. These forecasts are historically over-optimistic in favour of the government. How fucking bad must it be?
Liz Truss spoke in front of a blue screen and the internet had a field day I haven't looked yet, but the internet being the internet, I'm sure someone, somewhere, matted in flying dicks behind her.
Dear @trussliz You said today “I grew up in the 1980s, which were characterised by boarded up shops, people with no hope turning to drugs, families struggling to put food on the table. And that's why we need to get back to Thatcherism” Margaret Thatcher was PM from 1979 to 1990. https://twitter.com/randallnortham/status/1577654391133331457?s=46&t=PeJM2dQeY1Z7yr0ekK_KXg
Pound crashing again. BoE again buying up bonds to stabilise the market. Apparently they're spooked about what the OBR forecast will say when it's released, and also about the planned end of the banks intervention. Truss is still furiously backpedaling, appointing an insider to the Treasury top job (after being all about getting rid of orthodoxy) and also apparently going back on the idea of cutting benefits. Problem is, everyone knows she still wants to do really extremist shit as soon as she gets the room to maneuver. The best analogy I've heard is that her free-market ideologues are to the real market as Marxist ideologues are to the real working class. Real markets want stability and predictability, she promises "creative destruction" and all sorts of other Randian nonsense.
In our lifetimes, have we ever seen a first-world government crash and burn this hard, right out of the gate?
Thing is, they aren't right out of the gate. It's the same godawful pile of shit we've had for the last 12 years, just with a new nugget of undigested sweetcorn rising to the top. After Partygate and all the other Boris nonsense, trust in the Tories is at an all-time low and they're under the microscope because of it. If Truss had tried her tax cutting and benefit slashing in a year where we didn't have a cost-of-living crisis and she hadn't made it blatant that she's enriching her chums and fucking over the plebs, she'd probably have gotten away with it.
The Economist calls Truss “lettuce.” https://www.economist.com/leaders/2...made-britain-a-riskier-bet-for-bond-investors
The Bank of England - not the good guys here - are blowing things up again by telling pensions funds that they're on their own. It's effectively an ultimatum to the government to ditch their budget in its entirety. Real power struggles going on. A general election is badly needed.
It's almost as if the stories you're being fed about Biden being on his deathbed are less than honest. Or as if conservative economic policies don't work, regardless of who's implementing them. Take your pick.
"Let me start off with two words, Made in America." Joe Biden Also Joe Biden, "As Barack says a three letter word, jobs, J-O-B-S." No, they pump him with stimulants when he needs to make speech or look tough or something. I hear that late at night in the White House you can hear Biden calling out for Jackie to this day.
