Given what @Shirogayne has said about the status of the Navy, it seems like a really bad idea to delay maintenance.

Remember the pictures of USS Stout (DDG 55) returning to port last September after a deployment with no port calls (and thus very little or no stopping) due to COVID? Every BMC within view of the water in San Diego spontaneously had a seizure when they saw her.

Yep. A situation like what Elwood posted is largely cosmetic, but delaying things for years at a time is what leads to shit like the Fitzgerald incident.

Seems equally justified by the arguments used to justify the assassination in this thread.

 trump wasn't following US protocol or the Geneva Convention. If they call in an air strike against him, I'm not going to cry about it. And, no, I do not think this will set any precedence specifically due to the two reasons I gave.

I'm no fan of Trump and no hawk. But I don't see how any assassination attempt against a former president could go unchallenged.

What if it's Trump Jr finally snapping over the years of mental abuse?

I'd only challenge that because it would involve the spontaneous regeneration of a spine, and only Worf Son of Mogh has ever accomplished that.

Inaccurate or misleading information. Worf had a surgical procedure, unsanctioned though it may have been, it wasn't a spontaneous regeneration.

I suppose I deal with that the same way I've dealt with the last 4 years. I've never considered him the POTUS and never will. Not because he wasn't my candidate, or wasn't ideal, but because he said himself he was not president for those who did not vote for him. ... or words to that affect. Don't remember the exact quote.

How did Trump violate the Laws of Armed Conflict (what I assume you meant by the Geneva Convention [sic])?

I think quite a lot of people don't actually know what the scope of the various Geneva Conventions is, and have not read them.

Well ..., correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe assassination of a specific individual is against the Geneva Convention.

If not, it's definitely not in line with US idealism and no other president has ever attempted such.

The prohibition against the assassination of political leaders is only an Executive Order.

It started with Ford’s EO 11905 but has been reaffirmed/updated/altered by most presidents since.

Are Assassinations Ever Legal? It depends on who you ask. By JULIET LAPIDOS JULY 14, 20095:50 PM A police sniper Last month, the Central Intelligence Agency canceled a secret initiative, authorized by the president in 2001, to capture or kill senior al-Qaida operatives. Although the program was never operational, its existence raises the question: Can we assassinate anyone we want? No, but the exact regulations are murky. Gerald Ford’s 1976 executive order on foreign intelligence activities (issued after the disclosure that the CIA had plans to do in Fidel Castro) explicitly prohibits government employees from engaging in “political assassination.” This certainly rules out killing heads of state through covert means. It’s unclear, however, who else is off limits. The 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force Against Terrorists, a congressional resolution that grants the president the right to use “all necessary and appropriate force” against those who helped commit the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, arguably licenses the CIA to go after terrorists with impunity.
This, along with your link, certainly seems to suggest, as I've said, assassination attempts go against American Idealism.

EO 11905 certainly banned any government official from assassinating other political leaders.

    Then there's this: https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/war-crimes.shtml

    But,

So, while you are correct, it certainly hasn't been done by any other US president and for good reason.

I've always found the idea of a state defining the legality of it's own actions seem like a glaring conflict of interests.

If the POTUS were assassinated by a foreign power or powers would their defence of "It wasn't against our laws!" satisfy anyone?

Considering Iraqi insurgents are labelled terrorists and murderers when they kill US troops occupying their country, whilst a foreign national who had supported those insurgents whilst serving in uniform became fair game for an extra judicial killing I think not.

On the one hand, a former U.S. president getting assassinated by a foreign power in retaliation for military actions would be disastrous.

On the other hand, I still hope Trump sees this image and that it makes him shit his pants, and that he can't stop thinking about it whenever he's on the course.

    Holy fuck!

So Iranians can be spiteful as fuck.

My partner called me earlier to ask when a package I was sending would arrive because they were going to a party with their college’s Iranian group.

Talked to them just now and they were helping cook ‘kotlets’ (cutlets) which is ground beef, potato, onion and egg mixed together, formed into a patty and then fried.

    http://www.thepersianpot.com/recipe/kotlet-persian-cutlet/

What was the party? Why were they making kotlets?

It’s the annual celebration of the assassination of Soleimani. And apparently the missile strike had fucked his body up so much which then caught fire that the joke was that he had been turned into a kotlet.

So now making kotlets at his death day party is an annual tradition.

Is this a red flag? Do I need to run?
