But that, it seems to me anyway, would make the case for his candidacy worse. If you are a primary Republican and you want Trump and only can't get him because he's under indictment/convicted, why you then want DeSantis on any of the flavors of Trump-lite that are running? And by the time of the general, you then have to face questions as to the extent that you were lickspittle for four years for a now-disgraced convicted criminal of a president. In fairness to Pence, the criminality with which Trump is potentially facing charges is generally stuff that was before he signed on or at the end of the presidency and he can possibly distance himself. But at some point, someone will be asking harsh questions about how he compromised his moral values to run with a guy who had paid off porn stars and how he didn't speak out earlier about January 6 and the run-up to that. I just don't see a path to 270 EV for him.

I will give at least some Republicans who vote for Trump the benefit of the doubt that they do so knowing that he's scum, but thinking that he's still the lesser of two evils or otherwise have some sort of moral calculus going. A demented and sad, and incorrect moral calculus, but one nevertheless.

To the extent that might be true, how does that preclude them from voting for Pence?

I assume that if Pence somehow gets the nomination, most Republicans will vote for him. That is a separate issue from whether Trump voters have no moral values.

What if we're looking at DeSantis' Presidential run all wrong? You know how everyone says that Trump didn't really want to be President, so that he could start all kinds of new grifts? Well, would it seem insane if DeSantis was doing something similar, only acting dipshitty enough that he knows he won't have to worry about being President but could still do the "stolen election grift?"
