By voting for Cornel West you're essentially voting for Biden. At least that's what some people on this board think.

People are free to think whatever they wish. I see that kind of odd thinking all of the time. When I vote, I am voting for something, for someone, for what they represent. The system we live in has been nipped and tucked until there are only two "real" choices, despite the fact that those "real" choices are still tied in with the corporations of this country that truly control where our money goes. Raytheon gets more of a vote than I, or a million other Green Party voters, ever will. So I don't care if people think I'm voting for or against their candidate because I make my choice for someone good rather than a "lesser" evil. If people want to think "no" is "yes" and "yes" is "no," there is nothing I can do for them.

In a primary, do whatever, but until we change out plurality voting with public polling for something better, voting for anyone not polling in the top two contributes the same as voting for both of them.

Edit: to a first approximation. If there’s a candidate rising in the polls fast enough at the end of the race, that vote could be useful. Also if there are poll access questions that hinge on vote percentage.

Bloomberg has more shady settlements than Trump did. He is Weinstein and Epstein level with the number of payouts they were fining with him. This is why he ended up stopping his progression. In a plurality winner election with public polling, absent a sharply rising candidate near Election Day (which is a historical possibility, see Jesse Ventura), the top two candidates are known in advance. As a result, the election is a contest of whom of the two can get more votes. Your vote for one of those candidates expresses a real preference because it requires the other candidate to get a corresponding vote to cancel out yours. Of course, since they don’t know how many people exactly share your preferences, they have to just get out as many votes as possible. And since they’re doing that, your candidate has to do the same.

Now imagine you decide to vote twice, once for each of the top two candidates (legality aside). In this case, you have failed to express a preference because your action doesn’t cause either candidate to have to get additional votes.

Now if you vote for a third party candidate, or no candidate, it does not increase the number of votes any other candidate has to get to win. But this is exactly the same result as voting for both candidates, so they are equivalent.

Much more effectual is telling pollsters that you’re going to vote for a third party candidate right before. The follow-through, though, is meaningless unless a) the polling is nonexistent or exceptionally low-quality, b) the party needs turnout for ballot access or other official legitimation, c) this is not a FPTP election, or d) the third candidate is rising in the polls right before the election (so tell pollsters especially right before the election), and watch for high poll numbers late. Everyone else with doubts about one of the top two candidates in your candidate’s direction is doing so.

Absent one of these 4 conditions, voting for a third candidate is equivalent to voting for no candidate is equivalent to voting for both of the top two candidates.
