This is the real world, not a school yard. If a neighbouring territory attacks in the manner Hamas did, it will provoke a response, that's nothing to do with not having agency, that's just how things work.

Even the Graun accepts Hamas has been using civilian infrastructure. I have zero doubts that Israel happily expands upon the truth for its own ends, but it is an expansion not a fiction. Fig leaves don't come out of nowhere.

And I agree the civilian suffering is a feature, and I disagree with Israels lack of caring about it. Civilian causalities were always going to be high, partially due to the battlefield, partially due to Hamas' behaviour, but the casual attitude to death the IDF is taking is pretty horrific. I can accept a few isolated horrors - after all, Hamas have been busy with booby traps of crying babies and screams in Hebrew - but the sheer casualness is something that needs reigning in, and, where necessary, prosecuting.

But if you're going to take the view that civilian casualties should be avoided, then this really is a "both sides" damnation.

In the words of Sami Abu Zuhari a decade ago: "Hamas despises those defeatist Palestinians who criticise the high number of civilian casualties. The resistance praises our people … we lead our people to death … I mean, to war."

Hamas and Netanyahu share common ground on Palestinian lives it would appear.

I figured that's what you were going for, but here's the problem.

You didn't say Palestinians in the first post.

You said Hamas.

So it looks like you're conflating Hamas with all Palestinians. Which leads to a lot of messy assumptions about how messy your frame of mind is.

Or it shows you argue in bad faith, and look for the worst possible interpretation of what I was saying, and you did so without asking me to clarify, which means you accepted your own interpretation without any outside input before making that assumption.

I didn't argue, and considering this thread is in full "defend your side and only call out the other side's alleged misdoings" mode, everyone is unfortunately going to have to type out Palestinians when appropriate to make it clear they don't conflate Palestinian civilians with Hamas militants.

Israel has no problem conflating Palestinian civilians with Hamas militants, and there are plenty of people here who are fine with that, despite halfhearted protestations to the contrary. The reason I mentioned Hamas is because of that: just like with these colonizers black people who are arrested, shot, murdered always have a reason why "they were no angels," and I wanted to emphasize that mindset being used here to indict and condemn every Palestinian, including children. Hamas is responsible for 1200 deaths on October 7th. Israel is currently responsible for the 20,000+ deaths since then, including 10,000+ children, and yet the issue focus still seems to be Hamas and not a genocidal Israel.

As I said, the white colonizer mindset engages in overwhelming retaliation, just as the US did when 3,000 people died in the WTC attacks on 9/11, and we went and murdered a shit ton of civilians in other countries who had nothing to do with the attack. That is colonialism, imperialism.

Worth pointing out that these figures - based on what was the case for previous comparable conflicts - could be a significant underestimate. It's possible that on the order of twice or three times that number are dead.
