Amazing what a fucking phonecall does. In addition to water being restored and more aid trucks going in, we now have Israeli troops withdrawing and negotiations which look likely to bear fruit soon. And there's a significant rhetorical shift from Netanyahu. They'll probably end up doing the same deal that was available months ago.

We might review the handwringing earlier in the thread from those suggesting that Biden didn't have this power and was already doing his utmost to restrain Israel.

Can't underestimate the impact of the Iran situation on this too. Seems the US is pushing Israel harder now that there is a very real chance of an escalation with them.

The Israeli troops are repositioning due to potential threats from Iran and Hezbollah. Netanyahu has said he doesn't consider the war with Hamas over and will continue it at his own pace. Whether that means a further invasion of Rafah is an open question, or could just revert to missile strikes and assassinations of the Hamas leadership.

Until Netanyahu's term ends this will go on. He and his cabinet have made that abundantly clear, and it appears they have the majority support of Israelis to end Hamas, even if he himself is unpopular and under criminal indictment.

Yeah, this is all thanks to Iran. Netanyahu doesn't give a fuck what Biden or any other world leader says currently, unless they're openly threatening to attack.

I watched Fox News in those early post-9/11 years, and I remember Netanyahu being on there being all "well, if you're gonna kill Al Queda, let us kill Hamas! It's the same thing! Come on, let's be kill buddies!! Kill, kill, kill!! :polarslam2:" and the Fox hosts being all "awww, you're wonderful!".

Hamas rejects ceasefire deal in latest round of negotiations in Cairo today.

“We have seen them reject a number of proposals before, that we have thought would deliver incredible benefits to the Palestinian people that they claim to represent,” he said. “Most notably cessation of hostilities, but also conditions on the ground that would allow the delivery of much, much more humanitarian assistance.”

Pro-Israel Congressman Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) said that the rejection is a sign that Hamas and its military leader in Gaza Yahya Sinwar feel empowered.

“The hyperbolic and hysterical demonization of Israel—from fair-weather friends—makes Hamas feel emboldened to continue rejecting ceasefires and continue holding the hostages captive,” Torres wrote. “Sinwar feels like he is winning.”

Earlier on Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he was briefed on the talks in Cairo and that a date is set for the launch of a ground operation into Rafah.

It's not just that they start wars all the time, they never win any. Yet they still try to dictate terms.

And they wonder why sane people think perhaps they should try to do something else. It's been a hundred years since the Arabs first tried to purge the Jews in the Levant. They just can't accept that there is a state of Jews that is their equals. They remember the good ole days when they were dhimmis, they couldn't ride horses, they couldn't give testimony in court, and they couldn't look a Muslim in the eye, or they'd be beaten or worse.

Yes, the terrorist hostage takers clearly didn't have anything to do with it.

You really are just a terrorist shill now. There's no way a sane person thinks that the death of the hostages has nothing to do with them being hostages, or that all of them died because of the Israelis and the terrorist hostage takers are free of blame.

You remember when Hamas literally said they'd kill the hostages if Israel didn't stop their attacks on Gaza, right? They explicitly said they'd execute hostages if their demands weren't met. That was six months ago.

And you think that ALL of the hostage's deaths are due to Israeli actions?

You really have lost your mind.

Actually there is an unofficial ceasefire. Due to the closure of airspace last night was the first in six months where no war planes bombed Gaza. :)

Iran really overplayed their hand. They launched 30 cruise missiles, 120 ballistic missiles, and 150 drones at Israel - from Iran. Israel shot the majority of them down. But the Air Forces of the US, UK, Jordan, and even Saudi Arabia also shot down drones or missiles, protecting Israel.

And now Netanyahu has what he wants - justification to rally the entire country around him. Latest poll has 54% of Israelis supporting a declaration of war against Iran, with only 6% saying they should not respond with military force. 94% of the country says that they should make some type of military strike against Iran.

The US has stated it won't assist in any retaliatory attack against Iran.

This thread has apparently morphed into a conversation about the October 7 terrorist attacks and the horrible, awful, terrible genocide that Israel is committing in Gaza.

This thread is for the super kewl war that's about to envelop the Middle East (i.e., not just the usual Israeal/Palestine bullshit.)

Please keep up. kthanks bye. :)

While everyone has been dealing with the consequences of Israel's WCK massacre and their bombing of Iran's consulate, the aftermath at Al Shifa is almost going unnoticed. More mass graves are being exhumed at the moment, hospital patients with casts and catheters still attached.
When this is all over, this might just be regarded as the worst episode.

Not for the first time, the US state department refuse to confirm that the Geneva Conventions apply in Gaza.

    Link

I suppose that's why the Israelis can get away with firing a missile into a playground crowded with kids as they did yesterday.

    It’s a gotcha.

The US does not currently recognize Palestine as an independent state and in fact list Hamas as a terrorist organization so we don’t see the conflict as being between state actors and thus constrained by rules that govern armed conflict between state actors. The spokesperson stated that International Humanitarian Law did apply to Gaza.

Seeing as the Geneva Conventions govern a lot more than how the armed forces of states ought to treat each other, that's fairly irrelevant. And if it were that, he could just say so.

No, lardass here is being slippery because (unlike the US) Israel rejects the applicability of the 4th Geneva Convention regarding protection of civilians and he does not wish to address the obvious implications of that to what we're seeing, or what that would mean were they actually to apply US law to providing weapons for same.

The Defense Ministry and IDF say they have seized a total of NIS 29 million ($7.6 million) in cash in the Gaza Strip, and “forfeited” it to the state.

The cash was seized from Hamas strongholds and homes of terror operatives, during the IDF’s ground operations in Gaza, the ministry says.

Today, NIS 12 million ($3.2 million) was deposited at the Bank of Israel, adding to another NIS 17 million ($3.5 million) seized and forfeited since the beginning of the war.

The logic of genocide. This is redolent of Srebrenica.

The IDF are going to allow women and children to leave Rafah. They will force all "military aged males" to stay, to endure their operation there.
Anyone following the statistics will know that they count all men that they kill as terrorists.
They consider all men in the areas in which they operate to be targets.
And they consider all terrorists to be fair game for assassination.
