This is why you do not let people vote in the curriculum. That should be a standard. And I must say this is state propaganda, where are the republiots and conservatards? Here you have big government giving your kids less options.
I was at first thinking he may be right...if the AP curriculum was developed by members of the "hate America first" crowd But no, he just sounds like an idiot.
The right wing has always had a problem with facts. They know the facts aren't on their side so they try to ban the teaching of facts.
Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the states of facts and evidence. - John Adams Who is this John Adams guy? Sounds like a New England commie queer. - Jethro from Mooslick, MT
Don't be like some other people, judging the whole by the nutcases. Because I'd be called a rightwinger and I like I said above, these people are idiots.
I am just saying there is definitely an organized and systematic attempt to kill AP programs by Republicans and this is hardly the first time. They've been trying to remove science out of biology classes for decades.l and don't even get me started with how they are always trying to force their religion into official school classes. Hell, just listen to the load of horse shit these jackanapes babble denying the existence of the anti establishment clause of the Constitution.
^^...which is a bit like saying it isn't in the US, but in Oklahoma, which in turn makes perfect sense right now.
I can see the argument, tho. Yeah, there's a lot of bad in America's history, but there's also a lot of good. If the curriculum was designed to showcase only the bad stuff, that's objectionable. And besides, we all know that rewriting history is one of the favorite tactics of anyone trying to shift/consolidate political power.
I took AP History ten years ago. Unless it's changed dramatically, there's nothing wrong with the course. The R-tards in Oklahoma have cited specifically the lack of "American exceptionalism" and jingoism. University level history is supposed to be a critical analysis of events and policies, not an "America, fuck yeah!" indoctrination.
I took both AP US History and AP Western Civ. Got fives on both but still had to take both classes again in college any way.
You only got half of the needed credits so you still had to take the second one and no the AP test did not substitute the requirement that you have to take the 1st as a prerequisite to taking the second. Basically it was a big waste of time though interesting.
I scored so high on the math part of the SAT that I didn't have to take any math classes in college. I can't even do long division.
Long division is where math lost me in 3rd grade. I eventually learned how to do it, but from that point on… I did take AP history in high school though, because a friend a year older than me told me, "Whatever you do, don't take AP history."
I don't think state legislatures should be involved with curriculum,it should be up tithe local districts. That being said, they seem to be saying that these courses are part of common core, which is what I feared would happen. Common core starts off small, then grows and grows. I think it's fine to acknowledge negative aspects of US history, but it shouldn't be the main focus. I'd like to see more focus on civics in schools.
Civics, most definitely. History though, shouldn't be white washed. *ahem* Pun aside, one way to do that is do that is do to units on non-US or European cultures. And while I got some of that in my (non-AP) history courses in middle and high school, they were just touched on. There was actually nothing on the Middle Ages, and while that is Euro-centric, it would have been nice for me.
It is also much easier to dupe people who are not familiar with critical thinking and problem solving. That is why logic and science are evil.
An ignorant voter is easier to manipulate. Should it surprise anybody that school reform efforts are mostly geared toward making the electorate more pliable? This one is more over the top, but there are many subtle efforts at play, too. And it is by no means not just conservative Republicans. This instance may represent that, but much of the education work done by powerful liberals such as Bill Gates is also not really geared toward helping students, so much as amassing more power for elites.
These are our major wingnuts. Most Repubs in OK are good (that includes our Dem as they are basically Repubs here). This was just a committee vote. Doesn't it have to go to one of the branches and be voted on? I also see they are wanting a judges ruling. How does this shit work. I did better at Engineering concepts than civil.
Oklahoma Bill Banning AP US History Would Make Students Study Ten Commandments, Three Speeches by Reagan
Wheeell...wheeeellll...wheeeeellllll.....*shakes handful of jellybeans out of jar into hand, chugs the whole handful*....*chewing noises, belch*...wheeeellllllll..... Rinse, repeat, and there's your three.
The Reagan speeches would be far more profound than the Ten Commandments, which are mostly nonsense. If Reagan had encountered the burning bush, God would've just sat, listened, and been enlightened.
