All of you who lower the hammer on a 1911 know that one horrible consequence of doing that move wrong--leaving aside the possibility of a bullet going somewhere you don't want it to--is that the slide will recoil very briskly into your thumb/thumb and finger...and it won't be the slide that yields. Just sayin'.

My 1911 is only ever "hammer down" a fraction of a second at a time. :)

Similar to how I do it. I only carry my 1911 when my M&P isn't available. For instance I'm about to have a storm lake barrel installed. So my M&P will be unavailable for a few weeks.

I always point it down over the bed and keep my thumb FIRMLY on that spur, while holding the grip with my right hand and a FIRM grasp around the body of the gun with my left.

I like what I saw Apostle do in the video - keep the thumb in front of the hammer - I think I'll start doing that.

I don't make a habit of keeping pistols with a round in the chamber, at pretty much any time, home or vehicle. I have daughters, and while they do/will know how to handle a firearm, my confidence only goes so far.

Littleflow is clumsy as hell. She gets that from her mother... yeah... :flow:

Since my 1911 is normally on my side, and since I don't have children.. well, you catch my drift.

Hey, I can count the negligent discharges I've had on the fingers I have left on one hand!

That's... not possible! Unless you've had 2.5 negligent discharges! :spaceturkey:

Yeah. As someone who used to hunt deer with a '94 Winchester, taking a loaded firearm to half-cock isn't that big a deal (although I think I've had it go off once as a teen--pointed in a safe direction).
Heheheheh. Friend has a...two(?) year old. She was talking about coming out to visit awhile back. I got to thinking about my house: Lead paintchips all throughout the flower beds, power tools laying around, Drano, bleach and household cleaners in unsecured undersink cabinets... Most of the knives are up where toddlers can't get into them, But there's at least one loaded handgun in a drawer right at floor level.

Maybe having little ones over isn't the best idea after all.

Yeah, the only AD I've ever had happened with my dad's lever action .30-30. I was 15 and in a deer stand. I had just shot a spike and had chambered another round in case I needed to shoot him again. At the time, that rifle had a scope mounted on the receiver....which makes it exceedingly difficult to lower the hammer because there's not much clearance between it and the scope. :garamet: Needless to say, when I discovered that I didn't need to shoot again and tried to lower the hammer, I touched off the round I'd just chambered. Fortunately, I'd had good training and the rifle was pointed at the ground.

I complained about it so much that my dad finally took that scope off that rifle and now it just has its iron sights. :garamet:

I forgot to "clean up" once when my sister came over with her kids. The 9-year-old (who's now in his 30s) was on the floor watching TV, when he rolled over and stuck his head under the coffee table. "Hey, there's a gun under here!" and started reaching for the Model 29 I had in a metal clip bolted to the bottom of the table. I dove for it, in slow motion, yelling "Nnnnooooooooooooo!"

(That nephew is now an avid gun collector and shooter, btw).

My wife and I keep our pistols with a round in the chamber. However we also maintain absolute positive control of the weapons as well.
