Ahh, the morning of OSU VS Michigan. The morning of USC VS Cal. A LOT of stuff is going to shake out today. Two teams are going to run home crying to mamma, and at least one will be headed for the BCS title game, in all likelihood. Maybe 2. But even if USC wins and moves up to #2, there is still Notre Dame and UCLA- the two biggest grudge matches for SC, and SC still isn't playing National Championship quality foosball this year...
I'm trying to remember if there's ever been a team that enjoys coughing up big leads and collapsing in the second half like the Cowpokes.
OSU & Michigan just finished. And let's just say I'm glad I'm not a Michigan fan, because now I'd know beyond any doubt that regardless of how much talent they field they will never win a championship with Lloyd Carr at the helm. This makes him 1-5 against Jim Tressel and OSU. Exciting game, great athletism featured on offense on both sides, but not much defense. And fairly sloppy - Henne has a cannon but overthrew a bunch of recievers, including a sure fire TD to Manningham in the 2nd quarter. Lots of dropped balls on both sides. Some REALLY stupid penalties, including a helmet to helmet hit on Troy Smith on 3rd and 15 that ended up giving the game to OSU. Carr's defense was pathetic in the first half, and then OSU tried to give the game back in the 2nd with two fumbled snaps, both of which went to Michigan. But Carr wouldn't take it, because he wasted all of his timeouts before the end of the game on non-critical situations. That and the vaunted Michigan run defense gave up 2!!! hundred yard rushers in the same game, after not allowing one all year in any other game. OSU will probably lay the smack down in the national championship game against any contender, on sheer athleticism. That and Tressel is a great game day coach. But I think the claim these are the two best teams in the country and no one else comes close was shown up today. And the Michigan players might deserve a rematch, but Lloyd Carr sure as hell doesn't. He should be coaching Middle Tennessee State, not a national contender.
SC Cal is already pissing me off. 4th and goal on the 2, and Carroll goes for the FG. What, USC can't get TWO FUCKING YRDS against Berkeley?
Since when has Okie St. ever been something to worry about? They couldn't beat OU even with Heisman winners on their team that went on to have NFL Hall of Fame careers (e.g. Thurman, Barry). Go celebrate your "victory", as if squeaking by OSU is something to puff your chest over.
Yeah, they are looking positively mediocre. John David Booty has just been bad, he's missed two big plays already. USC's defense has been playing well, but their offense needs to wake up, otherwise they won't even be in the Rose Bowl this year, let alone the national championship. That being said, Carroll makes great adjustments at half time. Good chance they come out with some fire in their step.
I'm watching the USC/Cal game. They just showed a play three times and no one has said anything. Before the end of the play, Pete Carroll was at the top of the screen. He was just shy of halfway between the sideline and the hash-mark, not six feet from the side judge.
Yeah, they looked much better in the second half, shutting down Cal completley and scoring on two nice long touchdown passes to Jarret and Smith. That's the team I expected to see! And Rutgers goes down to Cincy, so they'll drop out of the top 10 assuredly. Only other undefeated left is Boise State, and somehow I don't think they'll be in the championship game (though they could make a BCS game now). So Ohio State has their appearance locked up, and now it's between Michigan, USC and Florida. Personally I'm hoping Michigan doesn't get the nod. It's one thing to replay a team you lost to in the regular season in a bowl. It's another to do it the very next game you play! And how can you make the argument they are the second best team in the nation when they didn't even win their own conference? Still, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out!
Yeah, I think Michigan had their chance today. USC had better squash ND and UCLA pretty hard if they want a shot. Right now they are undeserving, in my opinion, and I think the computer and pollsters will agree.
Well, they did lose to a 7-4 team. However, of the top 25 teams they've played, so far they've beat them 50-14, 28-10, 35-10, and 23-9. And of the eleven teams on their schedule, an incredible NINE of them are bowl eligible, and the tenth missed it by one game. Unless the teams they beat lose in the last couple of weeks, I think their strength of schedule (currently #2) will get them in.
That's funny too, in it's own way, because people used to bitch and moan that SC didn't play anybody tough. Thing is, with the odd exception here and there, they are pretty much playing the same schedule they have always played. Maybe it's just the other teams on their schedule have gotten better, as well. But I remember being pissed back in the 80's when it seemed like Florida or FSU was #1 every year, and every week they were beating podunk community college 80-0. Nice to see the PAC-10 finally getting a little respect. Even though it's still only a little.
See Nebraska 2001, weren't even in the conference title game, went to the title game, and Oklahoma in 2003, who lost the conference title game and went to LSU for the title. The BCS is better then the previous lack of a system, but flawed nonetheless. I won't be surprised to see Ohio State/Michigan part deux.
It would be difficult to express my total and complete lack of interest in a Ohio St. - USC title game. Really, my apathy would approach existential levels.
