OK folks, it's time to vote on the winner of the 2009 Wordforge Short Story Contest. We had three applicants, and you can download their stories in PDF format below. They are posted in order in which they were received. Vindication Two Days on Enterprise The Fire Inside I'm making an executive decision and saying that you've got two weeks to vote and decide the winner. A reminder, the winner receives the following fabulous prize: When two weeks are up, I'll let Lanz know who the winner is so that he can collect shipping details. Happy reading!
For me, it was very close between the first and third stories. I wish that I could have voted for them both!
Agree. The second story, IMO, didn't even fit the theme, and used a brevity of words I've not seen since...my last trip to northern Maine.
November 7th - the poll will close automatically at sometime before noon Pacific. It made it into the announcements messages, but somehow, I forgot it in this thread.
The winner of this year's short story contest is Paladin. As soon as he PM's me his mailing address the prize will be on its way!
I feel sorry for whoever wrote The Fire Inside, I think the difference between the two was very small indeed. But mucho congrats to Paladin!!
I wrote "The Fire Inside" And if i hadn't been ethically prevented from voting for me i would still have voted for Paladin. that story NEEDS to be published somewhere - it is outstanding. I would have been ashamed to have won and I find it VERY flattering that you guys thought it was even close.
^I said it in the earlier thread, but I really liked 'The Fire Inside' and think it could form the basis of a novel. Really fine work, Nova.
I loved your story Paladin, have you written much else? It reminded me a lot of classic 50s/60s science fiction and I agree with Nova, it definitely needs publishing.
Thanks for the kind words. I've only written a few things that I've actually finished! Here's one, a very conventional sci-fi short story: Disambiguation Here's another, a Star Trek-based short you'll (hopefully) find funny: The Final Log Entry of Starfleet's Greatest Unsung Captain I also wrote a Star Trek reboot/prequel script (now made irrelvent by the new JJ Abrams' film): Star Trek: A Gathering Storm I see the shortcomings in all of these; they need lots more polish before they could be commercial. But I enjoyed writing them immensely. I have an idea for a novel/screenplay that I'm exploring now...something might come of it...
I've thought so myself. The thing I was most unhappy with was that I rushed it so much that it's "bare bones" I like my writing to have a lot more descriptive language - "scene setting" as it were. And character development. The thing that i'm uncertain about is the resolution. On the one hand, I could take a page from "The Road" and have a pretty bleak ending....but my first instinct is to come up with a way where the remnant is saved in the end. Still, again, I find the praise very flattering because I had thought it was a pretty rough-hewn effort.
Darn. Somehow I missed this whole thing. Whoever wrote "Two Days on Enterprise" doesn't seem to have read the initial announcement, though. Where's the "end of the world" aspect?
Just got back in here, been a bit wrapped up with survival in RL. (sounds like a Readers Digest story, no? ) Glad youse guys got something sent in. I saved them and will read them later tonight at the shop and comment next time in later this week. I'll get mine in next year or I'll just post it in the Workshop when I'm done. Congrats to all!
